Personally, I think RTGame had a pretty good method of playing the game. RT would spend the weekends playing for about 8 hours, with occasional ~2 hour grinding sessions during the week. Once he finished a chapter, his editor would turn it into a 2 hour video that was half story moments, and half comedy to keep people entertained. This allowed people to simply watch those as recaps, then jump into the streams as is, if they wanted to. He started on October 22nd and finished on January 29th with a total of 22 streams.

The pacing in Persona is just really weird for most people. The tutorial isn't the LISTED tutorial. It's the ENTIRE FIRST DUNGEON. Before you get to the gameplay, you have to go through the first 2 hours of introduction, then the first few weeks of the game where you're mostly on rails doing either low rank social links or the first dungeon (that has limited gameplay because you have no Personas/equipment/social links). Once you get through the first dungeon it's great because they actually let you choose what to do. But there's a lot they want to set up right at the start so they don't have to do it later. Everyone I've seen get to the second dungeon of a Persona game finishes it. And no, you don't need to manually change subway lines after the first time. Fast travel will do it automatically. The only reason they make you do it yourself the first time is to get you in the shoes of somebody who's getting lost on the way to school, because you're actually lost lol.

And you don't have enough Personas to get invested in fusion yet. The crazy thing about swapping train lines is (i'm pretty sure. It's been about a year since I beat it.) You never do it again after the 1st time. It'll just show you a cutscene or you just straight fast travel. Also the Persona games have always been a slow burn at the start. To contrast the mid end game where you've got so much stuff going on it's hard to choose. "Do I hang out with one of the 5 S.links OR do I go see a movie so my stats will be high enough to start a new S.Link OR do I run the dungeon OR mementos, cause I've got some quest there???"

So, the thing about Igor’s voice is that his original Japanese voice actor, who did his voice for P3 and P4, died before the production of P5. They couldn’t use his previous voice. And connor has on many times always said he typically does not care for the writing or story when about 80% of the time you're going to be in a cutscene or in a social link reading dialog. No hate to Connor ofc and I've always heard Joey and Garnt in the past have tried to put him onto the games. But It feels like trying to put that one friend who only watches Battle Shonen or dbz onto watching my dressup darling or something likr that its just so out of what he likes that it feels like it's better for him to just stop where he's happy than for him to finish the game and then say "God it was so bad" because he didn't pay attention to the story

This is my appeal playing my first Persona game a decade ago (Persona 3 Portable): The idea of playing as a girl fighting to save the world while also handling school life and choosing people who you want to date was unique to me back then. Some of the English dub cast for the OG Persona 3 were really precious to me as I grew so attached to them the more I played it. (OG Fuuka’s a mixed bag but it’s kinda precious in a way) I legitimately had so much fun playing it, that I even replayed it for 4 times. I do think if one were to play the Portable version now AFTER playing the modern Persona games, people might get tired of it fast since no cutscenes in Portable and Tartarus can be VERY repetitive. So playing Reload would definitely be the better choice. (Such a shame that you don’t get to be FeMC as that’s, IMO, a major downside to Reload since she was the reason why I got interested in the Persona series in the first place. I like Yu from Persona 4 and Joker from Persona 5 though)
@ImArchiie25 күн бұрын
Yeah that seems to be a big sentiment around Reload, and honestly I'm bummed out too they weren't able to deliver FeMC route. Saying Joker Persona 5 doesn’t have a personality is expected from Connor but how does Joey think that 😭 Joker is a silent protagonist but he def has his own distinct personality
@chadachi397025 күн бұрын
He doesn’t, the anime for P3-5 all give their characters a canon personality and Joker in P5A is a piece of cardboard. Narukami was bursting with personality while Joker feels like a self insert in the anime. You being able to pick goofy dialogue options doesn’t mean that the character has a goofy personality when it doesn’t translate to the official material.
@dorianTFF25 күн бұрын
@ if you play the game and don’t see a stark difference between Joker and the other protagonists then I just don’t know what to tell you 😭 not even just from “silly dialogue choices”, Joker’s personality comes through in his voice lines, or animations, or how other ppl talk about him throughout the game
@izzy135619 күн бұрын
They're saying Joker only seems boring because that's *Atlus* keeps trying to push for him (leaning hard into the "self-insert" role). Other characters commentary on him being silly is usually *missable* in-game because it's optional dialogue, or is shown in works written by *completely different people* (the mangas, the anthologies, Strikers where he's at his funniest, etc). Or Xander's out here going above and beyond to *give* him a personality. More often than not he's defaulted by others as "quiet but determined" which is about as vague/cardboardy as you can get with a silent self-insert. It sucks because I agree, Joker's got a *lot* of personality, almost to Anime Yu Narukami levels. It's just severely stunted by Atlus overcorrecting after Yu.

The big difference in Royal and base P5 for me was the fact that they DRASTICALLY reduced the amount of times you were railroaded into going to bed instantly, like with Royal you could at least do a couple of things at home and I could actually make Thief Tools and not feel like I was wasting an entire day just to make a few lockpicks.

i love watching these! i respect your take on not being able to drop persona for x amount of time and come back; however, when i played it, i played it over the course of 4 years :) both approaches are ok, but i found that i associated diff times of my life with diff arcs in persona. it was a really cool way to experience the game. love the vids!

It's tough because I want him to lock in and play it, but I know once you are in there is no point of return until credits. The game walks the perfect line of visual novel and gameplay where 1 day you'll talk, shop around, explore and the next you'll be kicking shadows, doing parkour, and correcting villains the next.

As someone like Connor who doesn't actually look for a story in a game and prefers to actually just go for the gameplay, its been expected that he won't like this game but atleast we got a good reaction from him although he didn't even got to finish the whole tutorial lol.
@ceresbane26 күн бұрын
Honestly yeah. Persona is the most JRPG-ass SMT game. With a man that loves the sheer grim realm of fear and hunger. Connor is 100% a OG Shin Megami Tensei guy. Yes there is some cutscene nonsense but you have much more focused RPG gameplay (that is famously harsh) and choice driven story telling. Persona games are very much linear as hell in terms of progression and yeah, unless that game has a compelling story to tell (persona does but the execution has always been such a slow burn), lots of people will just lose patience with the teen hijinx nonsense.
@AlexThat20026 күн бұрын
I mean, he's already played plenty of Final Fantasy games as far as I'm aware. Persona is very different game series, but it's still an RPG he'll probably like if he's willing to put the time in.

I'm not really into JRPGs in general, and I'm not much into anime. I like some visual novels, but usually ones that make fun of the normal tropes. But Persona successfully hooked me by April 15th, and got me to play the rest of the series too, including 1 and 2.
@Phyrrax26 күн бұрын
The beginning hours of Persona 5 and the fluff in it in the middle/near the end are a legit criticism. Knowing there was a relatively short limited time he would play it, that choice was dumb....this time there is no mousey thats forcing him through it like with Final Fantasy.

Btw. about the beginning. It is very much slow, however in the few "gameplay" parts in between the cutscenes you get the opportunity to listen to conversations around you giving you some worldbuilding either by randomly overhearing stuff or going to people and pressing a button to talk/listen. Also some hints to other persona content is shown in those sections as well as giving you an opportunity to save before the next events/cutscenes. Otherwise it would be like Kojima lvls of cutscene and they'd be complaining about waiting for the cutscene to end.

Trying to judge a 100+ hour game off of 1 hour of gameplay is never gonna work. You've literally seen 1% or less of what it has to offer. You can't judge anything on that little bit. Take your average 12 episode season of any anime with 30 min episodes. Judging it on the same timescale is watching like 3 and a half minutes of episode 1. Actually, less than that, if we consider commercial breaks, each episode is only 24ish minutes, including opening/ending credits. Removing credits each episode is like 20 or 21 minutes. Let's call it 21. That means watching 2 and a half minutes of an anime, then having to say if you liked it or not. It could be the best anime ever, but you don't know that, you're only judging it on between 2 and 3 minutes of runtime. Go watch the first 2-3 minutes of your favorite anime ever and say if it's good or not only based on what was presented in that time. It's just not gonna work.

I remember seeing a copy of Persona 5 on sale for the PS3 and I ended up buying it. I played it for a few hours before making it to the castle for the first time on the first day of school and just stopped playing. It wasn't until P5 Royal came out on Game Pass for PC that I tried again and ended up spending hours on end playing the game to the end after several months. A part of my regreta not having played earlier but at the same time I ended up playing the definitive version without having to play through the entire game again just to unlock the new story content.

I hope Conner and one point decides to at least complete the first dungeon. He’s gotten through by FAR the worst of it and the thing that will deter him most and he’s right at the point where things pick up that if he decides to sit down and play it again he’ll know for sure if he’ll be hooked or not. And as for the fact the game is a 100+ hour game, it very easily can but that’s where the time management comes in. He could definitely get that game done in like 50 hours and still have a blast. Hopefully he’ll give it another shot soon

the only reason you're forced to switch train lines is because the protagonist is out of his element when he first moves to tokyo, he's uncomfortable, everything takes longer than it should. you can see he's not used to city life. its the only time you are forced to do something like that for a trip you're expected to do more than once.

Honestly tho, if you think the first hour was boring, eeeeh it's gonna be hard. Like it's not Persona 4 were the game actually takes a while before it gets to the mystery/rpg aspect and so if you stop too fast you can indeed just leave a bit confused. The intro of P5 sells you mystery and a whole aesthetic and mood as early as possible while also setting up a lot of questions and expectations thanks to the fast forward, so in my opinion if you see the intro and don't get interested at all, it's unlikely that you'll be interested later.
