“The turquoise she held looked like pieces of sky, and the garnet like teardrops from hell” really captures the album cover

I love this song and after repeated listens this is what I've gathered: Conor is quoted in an interview basically describing this song as a story about a guy that goes to a music festival and gets lost. Now as the group of friends arrives and lines up at a predetermined stage our main character lags behind in an open lawn by himself as he anticipates (I've assumed) the LSD he's ingested upon arrival to the festival to take effect. His judgement of the appearance of the artist and stage itself may or may not be the drugs taking hold of his senses but the girl approaching him with the jewelry is certainly pushting him in a direction that he wasn't expecting on his little trip. The following verse mentions his friends finding him after an all night search with a black eye and no recollection of where he'd been or what he did and after their seemingly frantic and whiny inquiry (this is how I received it with the sped up piano in the backround) he explains his logic as a person choosing to not lump themselves in with everyone else the way they are expected to but instead embarking on his own path the way he chooses and good or bad, the outcome will be of his own choice and not what was planned by those around him.

Governor’s ball [Verse 1] He came with his friends in a caravan To witness the Governor's Ball Sat by himself on a cool patch of grass While the rest stood like bricks in a wall The stage, it looked like a vending machine The singer, a black barbie doll But it was well lit, and well managed So no property would be damaged Until his boredom took full advantage Of it all [Verse 2] Talk to a girl with Klonopin eyes Who said she had jewelry to sell First he said "no thanks," but he realized That he wasn't feeling that well And the turquoise she held looked like pieces of sky And the garnet, like teardrops from hell She offered him a necklace And he wanted to accept it But it would end up too expensive, he could tell Then she said, "Why not? What have you got to lose? To lose? [Verse 3] When he never came back, and the curfew had passed His friends searched the fair grounds for clues But security guard with the maniacal laugh Said, "it's always the leader you lose" And he finally turned up in the broad light of day With a black eye as big as the moon They all asked him what had happened Oh, was it real or all imagined? And why on earth had he abandon them so soon? And he said, "Why not? I do what I've got to do, and so should you"

Id say its about how sometimes you have to do things that are unusual and risky to find your place. Kind of like the moment someone decides to embark of one of those "heroe's jourenies". But then again it's the first time I've listened to the song.
