Chin tucks fucked my cervical spine up and I'm working on fixing that now. My root cause was rib and and thoracic positioning which was very simple to correct. Cobra pose helped to build control but mostly allowing the ribs to collapse and then fully arching the back helped me build control. Laying on a foam roller to help with extension in the thoracic spine also helped. Really wish physio's and folks online had been aware of or speaking about this years ago instead of the typical Rows + chin tucks + chest stretches as that stuff did nothing but create more issues for me. Unfortunately this is all very complex and I did not have the money at the time for a physio but I'm not confident they would have prescribed anything different but I'm glad people are starting to identify the root causes and teach the proper fixes and biomechanics. I think the biggest thing to help people in pain is learning about all of the bodies ranges of motion and actively exploring those ranges of motion daily. It will teach you so much about your body and your default posture in all sorts of positions (walking, sitting, standing etc).

@scottk15254 ай бұрын
In fairness, animals (humans included) shouldn't have to learn how to breathe properly. We breathe that way naturally. The problem is that the modern world and our modern habits, tendencies, and lifestyles are so unnatural, it creates a lot of new functional and structural problems that humans didn't have to deal with for 99.9% of our evolutionary history. The connection between this unnatural lifestyle and the health and structural problems it is creating is something that is only recently starting to be researched and understood.

As a sufferer of various significant spinal issues from the Neck down to my Tailbone (S1) & sacroiliac joints. (Sacroilitis). I'm 72, male, and have a leg length discrepancy of a 1" shorter right leg sustained as a result of a fractured femur in 1966 - at age 15 (playing HS Football). That LLD was left unaddressed then and after more than 15 years or so, the Lower back aches and stiffness started. FF to 2012, after consulting with new Ortho doctors to address the chronic pains and stiffness, I had my first MRIs done (Cervical, Lumbar) . Mild to Moderate sites of Stenosis were detected, a number of disc Bulges ( L2, L3, L5-S1) , T9, C2-C7 issues , Military Neck, and Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees. The LLD, which was unaddressed, has wreaked Havoc with my spine with misaligned Hips, SI joint inflammation (left hip Arthritis), OA in both knees - each knee separately had Meniscus tears repaired surgically. I’m happy to explain what I did as best I can, but you would need access to a float tank to do it. Plus a lot of it was intuitive, it really requires tuning in to your body. I've watched a TON of videos on this issue and never seen anyone mention the rib cage and airway. I actually realized this on my own when I noticed my right lung always felt compressed. Now it's a lot easier for me to be aware of my posture because if I posture up, I can breathe better. I use it as a trigger to know when I'm slouching. I think part of why my rib cage is always compressed is the habit I formed in my sleep position. Pretty much curled up into a halfway ball. Now when I sleep, I notice this and straighten out my posture so that I can breathe normally. Seems to help me get much better sleep too. Feels like a nice stretch on my right lung, especially when I expand it with each inhale.

I think you'll have a hard time finding posture correction videos that are only worried about "symptoms." Everybody is trying to fix the root cause; it's just that everybody disagrees on what the root cause actually is. Some people think it's muscular, others think it's habitual, others still like Conor here think it's more about breathing. And frankly I don't see any strong evidence one way or the other that any given one of them is the true and only root cause. I think it's more likely that there are multiple factors that need to be addressed.

I have pretty noticeable forward head posture, and have tried a lot of exercises you recommend (breathing to expend the back rib cage, stretching the lats), with little success really. However, I also have bilateral condylar resorption, which sets the lower jaw significantly behind the front teeth. My docs have told me that its likely this restricts my airway significantly, as the lower jaw is pushed up against the trachea. I have a joint replacement operation tomorrow that should hopefully fix all that! I’m going to keep watch throughout recovery to see if my head posture changes, and revisit your exercises if i have to. Your videos got me into PT which I’m super thankful for. Keep killing it 💪

You talking about a tongue tie and how it affects the growth of the mouth is exactly what happened to me. I have a severe speech impediment with my “r” and difficultly enunciating and speaking fluidly. It wasn’t until I was 16 and I told my dad my tongue is too big for my mouth. Went to the dentist and he said my mouth is underdeveloped because of the restriction. He lasered the tie twice and it still grew back, but not as much. He got me fitted for a device like a retainer, but there always a “tongue” built in that lightly pressed against the roof of my mouth. Over time we would expand the device as my mouth grew, and what this did was create new bone growth, not scar tissue bone, therefore it grew my mouth to the size it is supposed to be at and created space for my teeth to then use invisiline.
@hailer6394 ай бұрын
When I talk a lot, the sides of my tongue hurt A LOT. It’s just like my teeth are too narrow or my tongue is too wide. I’m 17. Do you think I should visit a dentist? Also I just had my braces taken off a couple of months ago and even back then I think it hurt when I talked too much (maybe talking to someone for over 20-30 minutes). So it’s not because of the braces I think.

I feel like this surgery was one of the reasons for my chronic neck and shoulder pain although i cant say for sure. I’ve been having neck pain for about 4-5 years now, right around the time when I had the teeth extracted. Could be just correlation. I have a forward neck posture and constant shoulder pain. The neck issue was largely resolved after many many physical therapy sessions trying to improve muscle strength and adapting my muscles to perform differently. Nothing ever has been long lasting and i still have neck pains every now and then and shoulder pain basically everyday, every morning i wake up. I tried the exercise and i noticed the back of my neck activating during inhale and exhale. I noticed when i exhale, i have better airflow through the mouth, if i slide my lower jaw a bit forward. Very interesting i am going to dig more into this and see if these exercises help out. I’ve seen multiple PTs and nothing has been long lasting. My doctor literally wanted me to take strong drugs to help cope with pain 😅 i’m not into that. I don’t even like taking painkillers.. Hopefully this exercise helps because i’ve thrown the kitchen sink at this and nothing seems to last. P.S. do you do consultations? I would be very interested.

Should someone be considering jaw/maxillofacial surgery to correct tongue posture and underdeveloped jaw/palate?
@mrp902314 күн бұрын
What you actually need to do is see someone in person who can tell you what is causing YOUR forward head posture. There's a million different videos on KZbin all with slightly different solutions....many may be pretty good. But the vest thing to do is see someone who can check you oit and see exactly what is going on woth yoir posture and personalise some therapy.

Any research papers on the "ribcage compression" and subsequent use of neck muscles for breathing? This is the key assumption of all the corrective exercises.

Absolutely 💯 Percent true. I had teeth extracted when I was younger. Then as a adult we reopened those spaces and put implants back in. I feel like myself again... Please contact me. I am the only one that I know that has done this. I can answer many questions

Well now I wonder if you can get bad posture just out of bad habits?... should also be a possibility right? Instead of it just being due to a body problem.

Thank you Conor, will give this a try. I have destroyed my singing voice by practicing in the car for over a year or so which eventually (unbeknownst to me until it was too late) led to unfathomable neck tension and postural issues that I am struggling to get on top of.

Kyphosis is from ignored Atlas dislocations. You need traction/air brace and hardcore chin tucks. Through the nose bleeds. Unlock it and seize out of the Seizures you will have from unlocking it. Then the Kyphosis will un grow. Not Hardware friendly. Very painful.

i had 4 teeth removed as well. i’m gonna get 4 diamond teeth implanted one day as a replacement. for the airway of course. also doing the 90 degree breathing exercise, by the third rep my abdominal wall was cramping up pretty significantly. thought that was interesting. i can do tummy vacs but that breathing exercise hit my abs even deeper. don’t think i’ve been that deep in a very long time, if ever.

I am a mouth breather at night, so is my son. We both have a narrow pallet. And we both have necks that go forward. My other two kids are nose breathers and they have a normal pallet. Meaning I think the lack of air going into your nose causes this strain on breath and neck to go forward.

6:25 Thank you for sharing this! Many times we victimize ourselves by trying to treat symptoms. Just like with a pain medication, we can learn to adapt and even worsen a situation. Anyone watching this video: look deeper than the symptom and consider treating more than what hurts.

I think what you are saying is just secondary (due to decrease expansion of rib cage due to kyphotic spine )because of decrease the activity of diaphragm so it is lead to shallow breathing

@EDECO794 ай бұрын
That's the ongoing question until dentists and orthodontists get their collective heads out of their rears and focus on EXPANSION of the mouth. For now, try mewing to correct mouth issues. Also check your foot posture as that is often also out of whack, and integrate fascia release to get stuck postures to open up (I have found stuck fascia all over my body). Body work is an in depth long term process. Settle in and get started.

The first professional explained everything clearly without using technical language outside the layman, but the second professional filled his presentation with technical words that he didn’t explain. For example, in the first few seconds he used the expression, "both leaflets of the diaprapm" and layer, "bi-latateral diaprapm".
