Introduction:
In the dynamic world of trail running, the New Balance SuperComp Trail shoe emerges as a noteworthy contender. Designed to conquer uneven terrains with ease, this shoe promises a blend of speed, comfort, and off-road performance. In this review, we delve into the specifics of the SuperComp Trail, examining its features from the upper to the outsole and all the FuelCell goodness in between.
Upper:
The upper of the SuperComp Trail is a solid piece of synthetic mesh engineering, crafted for both resilience and breathability. Its sleek, yet robust mesh material ensures a snug fit, adapting to the foot's natural shape. Reinforced in critical areas, it offers protection against trail debris while maintaining optimal airflow, keeping your feet cool during strenuous runs. Keep in mind the fit is snug, you may want to go a half size up if you pick up this trail running shoe.
Midsole:
New Balance introduces an innovative approach to cushioning in the midsole of the SuperComp Trail. The FuelCell technology, known for its responsiveness, works in harmony with a meticulously designed energy arc. This combination provides not only a plush underfoot experience, buttery soft, but also shields the foot from sharp objects and uneven surfaces. The energy return on each step encourages a powerful and efficient stride, making it ideal for both short sprints and long-distance endeavors.
Outsole:
Traction is paramount when traversing diverse terrains, and the SuperComp Trail's outsole does not disappoint. Crafted from durable Vibram rubber with strategically placed lugs, it offers a grip that instills confidence on both wet and dry surfaces. Whether you're ascending steep inclines or navigating slippery descents, the outsole ensures stability and control, allowing you to focus on the trail ahead. What really stands out is the placement of the lugs, New Balance really nailed it when it comes to the configuration of the 4mm lugs.
The New Balance SuperComp Trail shoe stands as a testament to innovative design and a deep understanding of a trail runner's needs. From the thoughtful construction of the upper to the robustness of the outsole, it's a shoe that doesn't just meet expectations but seeks to surpass them. Whether you're a seasoned trail veteran or embarking on your first off-road journey, the SuperComp Trail is a companion that promises to elevate your experience with every step. Get ready for some bounce and energy return on the trails. Embark on your next trail running adventures with confidence and let the New Balance SuperComp Trail shoe be the foundation of your every stride.

Been wanting to make this comment for years now, so here it is. Price shouldn’t be a factor in scoring a shoe. It should be part of the discussion but not part of the score. Love the channel. Good work Seth.

I love the SC Trail and it's one of my favorite shoes of 2023. It also feels and rides great on road and is ideal for road-to-trail excursions in which you have equal amounts of tarmac road and dirt trails. I can see that it's not for heavier runners. I'm of light build (5'7", 127lbs or 167cm and 57kg) so the soft FuelCell foam feels very comfy and still quite stable with the carbon plate. I'd opt for the Saucony Peregrine 13 for the really technical trails but I'm in SoCal and most trails I run are smoothened hard-packed dirt trails with relatively mild inclines and declines, so the SC Trail is perfect for such terrains. The SC Trail does run snug and I have a slightly wide forefoot so I went up half-size. I also replaced the crappy stock insole with the inov-8 Boomerang and that was a very big improvement. I have two pairs with around 230 miles each and there is now a noticeable wear on some of the lugs but they are still grippy and I haven't noticed any performance degradation. I think I can get up to 400 miles on each pair and I may consider getting another pair on discount although I'm holding out for the Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra coming out in April. I don't think the SC Trail is for everyone. It'll suit light-build runners better and for relatively smoothened (not-so-technical) trails because the upper can feel loose. It does feel like a road shoe that's been tailored for the trails. I mainly run on the road but 20% of my weekly miles (my mpw is 80~90) is on the trails so I do pay some attention to the world of trails shoes. I'm a big fan of Adidas Adizero and NB FuelCell/Fresh Foam shoes for the road, so I'm naturally interested in getting a similar feel on the trail. That being said, I'm really enjoying the Merrell Agility Peak 5 and Peregrine 13 for the trails as well. I find the SC Trail best for going fast on relatively straight-line smoothened trails, but for more hilly, rocky, and mountainous trails, I'll go with the AP5 and P13.

Thanks, Seth! Didn’t work for me- relegated. Much too unstable even on moderate trail and the upper isn’t sufficient to offset the wild bouncing. Best trail shoe of ‘23 was the Speedland GS:PSG for up to 50 K. The Salomon S/Lab Ultra d’Haene was my 100-mile racer- highly recommend! Best to you and your family!

The New Balance SuperComp Trail has been a shoe that I've wanted to test/review as well but sadly, haven't been able to get my feet into a pair yet. Looks like a fun shoe (like the NB Summit Unknown v4) with some serious upgrades for more competitive trail running. Thanks for the review Seth!

The higher the stack height, you would actually be more likely to heel strike than run up on the toes. Lower drop shoes encourage forefoot strike

Wanted to love these, but too narrow in the toebox (what happened to NB lasts?) and the upper was insecure for me. Too bad as it felt squashy, but couldn't even get out the door in these because of the fit. :( :QD: Trail running shoe of the year was Xodus Ultra 2 (hon mention Trabuco Max 2).

In my opinion in controlled slipping and sliding is more important than outright grip in steep descends. QD: Salomon s lab pulsar 2 sg is crazy light and fast shoe although the midsole packs out way too fast. Also the upper could be a bit more better draining. Pulsar SG has a great lug pattern for sliding downhill although the geometry isn't the best going downhill. 100 times better trail shoe than the red slab pulsar - at least for Finnish forest trails.

I ran a 25k in this shoe and loved it! The cushioning was suprisingly soft. I'm a mild overpronater and did fine, albeit it was just one race in these. Ultimately I returned them since I only do one trail race a year.
