The fact that Alexandra did many lessons and even when people doubted her she still pushed herself past the anxiety enough to carry on. She didn't give up and had perseverance...What a solider!! She is such a role model to other who feel this way when driving including myself and now seeing such an amazing example like Alexandra having the confidence to now drive is helping so many other people. Thank you so much Alexandra for making this video, your are such an inspiration. I hope eventually I pass too.

This is me right now. Im 30 and I have just passed my theory & having lessons weekly and confidence is a huge issue for me, I have anxiety leading up to the lesson every single week, and when its over I literally go for a nap and its a huge weight off my shoulder… until the next week 😭

I'm exactly the same! My practical test is coming up and I need to practice, but I dread every single lesson. Also, I'm driving my own car with family as the lessons were too nerve-wracking, it would literally ruin my week just worrying about it.

i am the same, i get exhausted every week because i spend half of it anxious for my lesson and it just took my energy. so i asked my instructor if i could do lessons every fortnight, this helps me have at least 1 week respite from the anxiety, i also have my own car which i do use at least once a week even if a brief trip somewhere local with my fiancee to help me. that way i dont get too rusty behind the wheel. i still have the anxiety before my lessons but thats cause i feel like its more performance anxiety, trying to prove myself. i want the lessons and practical over with so that i can have my life back again and not feel like ive lost half my life in the swirl of anxiety.. i tried having lessons on a weekday but i ended up worse off when im working as i get really anxious, plus when i finish im just going to be stuck in rush hour traffic anyway. so i have to sacrifice time on my weekend instead.

Well done I have mental health bi-polar. And struggle with the test day itself. And confidence issues. With driving instructor had lots of different driving instructors. And god knows how many hours of learning. But determined to pass. Last test I failed right at the end on a reverse manovere around a car. Legs were shaking as doing it as knew I'd pass if done it. Gutted I failed but will try again. Good luck to everyone. With mental health.

Even though I don't have an anxiety disorder, I can relate to much of what Alexandra has said. I was quite an anxious driver and so I switched from manual to automatic and the difference was night and day. I felt soo much more at ease whilst driving and it made me excited to hop into the driving seat and learn to drive. Huge amount of respect for Alexandra for persevering and succeeding.

I'm currently contemplating buying a second vehicle with a manual transmission. I have time to learn to drive it (actually I've driven a stick shift 4 years ago for a week), but I have to decide if the transmission will be a deal breaker for this vehicle, which also has a camper that I want.

@madelaki
@madelaki 2 жыл бұрын
Yeap. I'm currently learning, have been for the last year, give or take a couple months. On the first month I could tell the transmission was going to be a big, big problem. I couldn't convince my dad that it was hard because it's been second nature for him for decades, he doesn't even remember his beginner days. Sadly I can't afford to simply get an automatic car, as they're relatively rare where I live and we're dirt poor (the "car" I drive is actually a van from the early 90s that we got for cheap because it had been left to rot in tall grass for years). On top of that I have a pretty bad case of generalized anxiety disorder. So I've just been soldiering on. Tonight for the first time ever I felt very relaxed driving my mom home. I still have plenty left to learn like parallel parking or highway norms, but I'm making progress. I doubt it'll take me 4 years, but given the circumstances, I wouldn't feel inadequate if it did. Life isn't fair, what can ya do.

She reflects exactly what i felt during my lessons and how i still feel after i've passed. A lot of people when they pass are straight onto the motorway and driving to the fullest. People like me who have driven for over 2 years now have only been on the motorway about 4 times and each time was because i had no other choice and each time was only one junction in duration. It takes time for some of us like she said, to just gain confidence in ourselves first. My first time driving on my own was to work and back which was only 10 minutes away, i was shitting bricks. Now 2 years later i can say i've driven 85 miles to the coast and back. A huge milestone. I hope mores to come. Thanks for the video i'm just glad i'm not alone with this anxiety crap.

Same here i started learning to drive 12 years ago. I practiced for a year then stopped as i wasnt progressing at all. My instructor even bumped me off on another instructor. After 9 years i plucked the courage to start my lessons again . 3 years learning and 2 failed tests with very long covid lockdown gaps in between i persevered . I was going to give up when my mum passed away in August as i got depression but my instructor booked me a test. I was a nervous wreck shaking so much on the day.i couldnt believe it when the examiner told me id passed. It was an emotional roller coaster all the way through and i never thought i would pass. Anxiety is a mental fight between mind and body which drains you.

I think I had about the same amount of hours of lessons because of my anxiety (I'm 24 with learning difficulties that affect my driving.) I never thought I'd pass - I passed my test 2nd time this year. I chose automatic, because it let me focus more on the road. I'd have panic attacks before every lesson, nearly quit, and hated driving. Now I've been driving for a few months and I'm doing things I'd never thought I'd do, like motorway driving for example. I promise you, you can do it. If you want more lessons, have them. If you want automatic, do it. Change your instructor if you like - I went through about 4 until I was comfortable, which is so important. Whatever gets you behind the wheel, it's your journey. Thank you for this channel, it really helped me!

Going for an automatic definitely seems like a smart choice if you're an anxious person as there is SOO much less to focus on when learning and stalling can really get even calm, level-headed people quite flustered, surprised more people don't take the obvious route like you did and make things a lil easier on themselves

Having a patient driving instructor that encourages and believes in you makes a difference. I had a couple that raised their voice and got annoyed with me. I lacked confidence for a long time time and the pressure to pass was a lot. I drove on and off for years and ended up wasting lots of money. During lockdown I bought a car and family members helped me to build my confidence. I focused on just being comfortable and driving to ease the pressure off the test. I could drive but it was the nerves so trying to relax and remember you’re in control helps. I then did both - family lessons and professional and found a new instructor I finally passed with only 17 days left on my theory! I couldn’t drive on dual carriageways without worrying or doing more than 40mphs but now it’s a breeze. You can do this! Driving is not a sprint it’s a marathon. The more you do lessons and learn the better you are on the road

I relate quite a bit to this! I started learning to drive in 2018 with a manual car and it was *stressing* me out. My father and brothers tried teaching me but I was always nervous and would get physically sick just thinking about driving. Last month I decided enough was enough and booked lessons with an automatic vehicle. I only did 7 hours and my instructor told me to book my drivers test and I passed! I decided to drive a car that didn't stress me out unnecessarily and it helped me sooooo much. Learning to be kind to yourself and patient really helps when dealing with anxiety in driving

Thank you so much for your videos! I will continue learning with each one. I passed on my second try today with 2 minors, my first attempt ended very quickly as I was just so nervous with the pressure of the covid backlog and my theory test expiration date approaching. Had to go for 4 ‘tests’ in total as 2 were cancelled on the day and the anxiety for days/weeks before each one was awful. Overall, it took me around 3 years to pass due to many factors like lack of money, no friends or family available to practice with, having to switch instructors at short notice, and of course, lockdown after lockdown. These videos kept my driving knowledge up and have helped me to gain confidence with my driving despite it all. To anyone else struggling to get their license, take it easy on yourself, there’s so many obstacles at the moment and it might feel nearly impossible but just keep going. You will get there, best of luck!

This really helped calm my nerves. Unfortunately, my entire family has engraved into my head that manual is the only car ill be learning in so i had no other choice. I have an incredibly hard time conceptualizing the clutch and doing 4 different things in a 3 second span so what ends up happening is my mind blanks, I forget what to do and have a mini anxiety attack on the road, which never ends well (no crash but alot of embarrassment/humiliation ). The second i see another car im already in panic mode and even my mums concerned about the anxiety I get the day before a lesson. I honestly think if I was allowed to just have an auto license, I would be much happier, but that wont happen for a while🥲. I remind myself that even if it takes longer, it'll be the right amount of time that I personally need and that I'll get there one day😖 This video and specifically your channel helps me alot so thank you so much for that!

It's important to learn what you want to learn. As for too much to do at once, try to learn to control the car slowly in a quiet area without traffic. Then try to accept when you're learning to improve your skill on the road you will slow traffic down. It's perfectly normal when learning.

For me knowing this and being comfortable with it was an advantage (though still finding the process difficult). Having an understanding instuctor is also essential. I tried lessons with a few different people (who I am sure were all good instructors in different ways) until I found someone I thought would suit me and I am very pleased with that I did

This is a very moving story. Congratulations Alexandra, I have a lot of admiration for your grit and determination - if I was your friend/mother I would be very, very proud of you. Disclosure - I have diagnoses of CPTSD and CEN, anxiety is a big problem for me and has hampered me so much in life (I'm learning at 60). Your experience (alongside the other videos in this series) is really encouraging and valuable for a lot of people I'm sure. Thank you for having the courage to share it.

What a lovely lady Alexandria is, she should be extremely proud of herself. I too suffer with anxiety disorder which prevented me from driving for 10 years after passing my test. A year ago I decided to get on the road, I had refresher lessons and got my first car in October 2020. It's been a long road for me and I needed to get medication from the Dr which helped me cope with the panic attacks. I can now pretty much drive anywhere and I can get in the car with no issues. Anyone who is anxious about driving, there is light at the end of the tunnel ❤️

She’s such a sweetheart. Thank you so much for sharing! It took me more time to learn than my friends and family and I finally passed my driving license this year. Looking back, I’m happy I took the time that I needed. I took the test 3 times and i was anxious, stressed and shaky during my first test but it got better and better with practice and experience. Just keep going, you’ll get there!

I really appreciate this as someone with anxiety. I had 2 different instructors because i wasn’t comfortable with my first one. Done way more lessons than i have heard of anyone else doing and failed my test the first time, which really knocked me. I didn’t want to do it at all again but i did and im so grateful i passed, I probably wouldn’t have done it a 3rd time as i just hated the stress so much and i really struggled being in a car with a stranger. Thanks for making this video, i passed last week and watched as much of you as i could to refresh before my test and it really helped keeping me calm and making me feel more confident. Thanks for being a great guy and doing this video and being patient and kind 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Well done Alexandra!!❤️ My story is the opposite….I passed my test first time with 0 fault, but my anxiety developed after when I started to drive alone…it took 2 years to start enjoy driving and accept that I am not a bad driver and capable of making good decisions at the right time. All what I can say is please do not feel any shame and take your time!

I don't have a diagnosed anxiety disorder but I am super nervous and anxious when driving. You seem like a very determined individual. Thank you for doing this interview and sharing. Richard as always a fabulous patient instructor and you can see how much he cares about his pupils.

Such a good idea to post a video like this. Thankyou . I’ve avoided learning to drive for years and have just gone back to it. I decided to learn in an automatic this time round, to take out the stress of gears ( that was a big thing for me) I’m 4 lessons in now and I’m actually enjoying it. I still get extremely anxious at times and so it’s harder for me to take in information. I am learning and enjoying it though overall. This Channel has really opened my eyes to how common it is to struggle when learning to drive.

Alexandra your a amazing person! I needed this after going backwards in my learning lately due to anxiety 🙃 I panic one thing goes wrong and then it's a snowball effect. I'm so determined to pass it though and this video has definitely given me more confidence to do it. Started 10 years ago then had a break and covid hit 4 theory tests failed and just passed that last year so praying this year I actually pass my driving test!

Alexandra, you are an amazing human being. You NEVER gave up no matter how hard it got. Thank you so much for telling your story. Feels like I'm alone and I know I'm not. You are a star and so deserving of your license. I have so much more admiration for someone who tried and tried no matter how hard it got, than someone who takes 20 lessons and passes first time. I don't have an anxiety disorder in general, but I do when it comes to learning to drive.

Good job Alexandria. Anyway, thank you so much for this wonderful video and to all your videos that i’ve watched for the past few weeks before my test last Monday 20/12/2021 and luckily that i’ve passed 1st time with just 1 minor. Now i’m part of those who passed but still watched this kind of video about driving. Thank you once again. Cheers.☺️

I suffered with a generalized anxiety and panic disorder(s) - despite all my mates turning 17 then going in the driving seat, i wouldn't even approach it. I was actually more frightened of the social interaction (which was always the greatest point of my anxiety) - than the driving, but the driving didn't help. 2 CBT "courses" and 6 months of pills later, and i'm not perfect but i'm much better, test is two days and I'm just about breaking a sweat now..... my point is though, if my condition was more serious or wouldn't reduce the way it did, i don't know if i could've done it, let alone talk about it pubicly like this. I have huge respect for you sticking at it and sharing your experiences!

Huge huge love and respect to Alexandra ❤ I have GAD, ADHD and other mental health disorders that severely impact my confidence and overall cognition and her experience and perspective matches completely to what I and others are going through. Patience, determination and love are definitely the way to get the confidence back to be able to drive safely and smoothly - and how long you take to do something shouldn't matter as long as you can do it right and confidently. I have my first test booked for January, and I hope to pass!

In Australia we have to do a minimum of 120 hours as a Learner before we can take our test. So to put a different spin on it, you learned faster than every Australian. 😜 Don't let the hours bother you - the result is the same in the end! I hope you passed and got your confidence now.
