Awesome Vid as always! As a fellow spring hopper I appreciate you stopping and showing these! You did missed 3 springs on that upper part, Tupelo Spring, Glowing Spring and Walsingham Spring, all below walsingham bridge. The Dammed up Spring run was Palm Spring and the boil across from Seashell campground is actually from the nearby Devils Hole Sink Spring, at which 10' down the sink there is a small cave where the Spring water that flows up from the bottom cave exits into the creek below a limestone ridge, it's called Devils Spring. Blue Springs (where yall entered the small cave) is our favorite spot on the creek :)

Well at least when you had to cross all those log jams and obstructions you had a firm river bottom beneath you. Here in Central Florida many of the rivers have a black, oily-mud bottom that makes quicksand seem like spring water! I was in the Upper St. Johns River Marsh 2 weeks ago and had to line the canoe down several very shallow creek fingers. I'd take 4-5 steps and suddenly sink up to my knee is a glue-like muck that required pulling both boot and pant leg off just to free yourself. One time I was in 4 inches of water and sank to my mid-thighs while clutching the edge of the canoe to keep from going deeper. Of course that's when an airboat with about 10 tourist goes by and gives me "that look." Great fun.

That's true! Wow, haven't been in stuff quite that bad... Maybe a couple of soupy spring runs but it was all fun lol

I've been planning to paddle the econ and the chipola for a year now but gonna put in on hold for the winter draw down of the Rodman Dam on the Ocklawaha River so we can make our pilgrimage to Canon springs and the other ones. But after that, come spring, I'm doing this!! This video is just making me more hyped up for it. I live closest to the Alapaha river and Withlacoochee since we live on the GA side but close to the FL line. I've found quite a few beautiful springs along the Alapaha. I got an old topo map from decades ago that shows two springs in Blackwater State Forest, but I've explored them on foot and they're dead/non-existent. My best guess is they dried up a long time ago or were just mismarked (when speings die flow reverses and they suck water back in as the aquifer level drops). They were just completely stagnant. It's possible there are a couple small leaches/boils at the very top end of the state forest, but I'm not sure. To my knowledge, the most Westerly located springs in Florida are at Eglin AFB. You need a range pass from the USAF to get to the main one (Blue Spring), and most of the smaller springs aren't publicly accessible, even with a range pass. There is also Turkey Creek located in Eglin AFB, which you can kayak on, and the upper end is the most clear river run I have ever seen in Florida when it's not rainy.
@cup_and_cone6 жыл бұрын
Jason Smith - Since you live nearby in Destin, do you know if this is real? Crystal Spring goo.gl/maps/adv5jHXhPD72 I saw this exploring Google maps the other week, but I can't find anything on a topo, and doubt anything is there. I've ridden my bike there several times, but from what I remember, I don't think the geology is there to support a spring.

Quick question from a guy from Michigan, so since you are in Florida, how do you deal with alligators on your trips? I know this seems like a silly question but, I'm thinking about coming on down and I was thinking about bringing my kayak. Only reason I wouldn't would be that the gators that I've seen while down by Okeechobee are about as big as my kayak. I realize that the video's that I've watched so far have been from northern Florida. So how do you deal with them? Do you see many of them while on your trips? I just found your video's a few days ago, and it's gotta me wanting to do more adventurous trips instead of the big wide slow rivers and lakes. Today I'm going to go down a small river like the one in this video, because of this video. So keep making these video's you are fun to watch!!!!!
@TripSmith6 жыл бұрын
I don't have to deal with them. Most of the time they are used to people and they get out of dodge before you even see them.... If you paddle in places where people paddle often you don't have to worry. At Okeechobee, it might be different. BUt there are PLENTY of places to paddle where you don't have to worry about them. Glad you enjoy the video and Get Out There! If gators were a real problem, people wouldn't be kayaking everywhere ;)
@crazylare16 жыл бұрын
I'll definitely keep getting out there!! I was wondering about contacting you when I head down that way, kayaking here in Michigan is about done for the year for those of us who don't like getting cold and wet at the same time. I mean, going out and clearing the driveway with the snow blower in 0* weather is fine, but getting wet in 50* weather isn't my thing. So to keep kayaking I need to go south. Well anyhow thank you for your reply, hope to hear from you again!

Several springs and limestone cliffs along that float.

Do you take the fin off for these trips? It seems like it would hit everything

The Kahuna doesn't technically have a fin. That's one thing that makes it great for trips like these. It's basically a kayak hull with some molded fins that don't protrude down past the bottom of the hull.

Just watched it, looks like you learned quite a bit! Do it again! and again! and again! and you will only get better and more comfortable.

Small creeks turn into work more than fun sometimes......and can be actually more dangerous than a big river.....god speed brave souls.....I’m too lazy for all that.....

It was a good bit of work, but that is probably what I enjoyed the most (aside from the laughing). If it would have been easy the video wouldn't have been near as good ;)

Had our own overnight creek adventure last week. Log jams and downed trees every where. Check out the video if you get a chance. Still had a good time and lots of laughs.

Man, the creek looks low! That's weird with all the rain we've had...

Yea it wasn''t very high but it was certainly doable. We were going for it no matter ;)

Love little creeks like that, but I would be 90% covered in poison oak/ivy juice coming home. PI vines seem to seem to seek out fall down trees like you guys crossed. Man, I'm itching just thinking about it.

I love em to! Yea, there was al ot of vegetation everywhere and it was to heck-tick to try to identify it all so who knew what it was. Oh well lol
