Sorry, I cannot really answer that question because I've never looked for this. I always use GTM in my own implementations. But maybe CookieYes falls in that category?

Re CookieYes - if I'm understanding their documentation correctly, the *only* thing I need to do is check the "support Google Consent Mode" box and install their tag, then they automatically send updates as users interact with the cookie banner. All the other steps of adding custom variables and firing a tag to update consent are unnecessary? Am I understanding that correctly? Is there something about that method that didn't work properly for you?

Is it necessary to use same company's GTM tag tempelate and cookie banner? For example can I use any CMP Cookie Banner with Simo Ahava's GTM Tag Tempelate?

No that shouldn't be the case. Just check that you aren't setting consent state parameters twice. In other words: If you're using Simo's template, disable Consent Mode from your CMP.
