I love Effie's character development. Going from brainwashed capitol person who believes its an honor to be in the games to seeing Katniss win, truly getting to know them and seeing the capitol take back everything the victors are promised. The whole reason its an honor. I think the moment she had to pull Katniss name out of the second bowl her "rose colored glasses" started to break

It’s interesting watching a reaction by someone who saw Songbirds first, referring to Snow as “Coryo” and making multiple mentions of Lucy Gray. Those of us who read the original trilogy of books and saw the movies without the more recent book/movie had little backstory on Snow. And as for Katniss, he was just “Snow” to us.

Fun Fact About Mags: She won the 11th Hunger Games. Lucy Gray won the 10th. She was also the first Victor to be forced to go on a Victory Tour. (Which I think is punishment for something since, as you say, it sounds awful.)

Peeta is a pure hearted person. Katniss is all he cares about. He has every right to feel what he feels sbout the Katniss situation. He loves her but he isnt forcing her to do anything. Karniss is a child. It is unfair to put the weight of the world on her and all she wanted to do was save her sister. She is being forced into being the Mockingjay just like her being put in the games.

One big detail I hate they left out of the movie was recapping what the first Quarter Quells were like. The first Quarter Quell, the districts had to vote which tribute to send in. The second Quell, the districts had to pay twice the amount of tributes. That was the games Haymitch won. There's a deleted scene where Plutarch goes into a vault, open a safe depots box, and inside is an envelope with the 75 written on it. He takes it out, replaces with a another envelope, and burns the original. One great theory I like about the original is that the parents of the reaped tributes will be force to compete, like a reversal of roles, and a scary thought that The Hunger Games is an all ages game.

Gale being all butt-hurt in the beginning of Catching Fire is the reason why I NEVER liked his ass LMAO. Not even 15 minutes into the movie Katniss is obviously struggling with PTSD and his mindset is just like, "Yeah, but... what about us"??? Dawg this is NOT about you and I know damn well you better not even ATTEMPT to make this girl feel guilty or responsible for your feelings when you never made clear intentions of building a relationship above the sibling status. Something about that short interaction immediately left a sour taste in my mouth which never went away, especially when you compare it to the conversation inside the arena where Peeta tells Katniss that she has to live for her mom, Prim, AND Gale.

Chille I felt the EXACT SAME WAY. The reason Peeta had all those trips and falls and seems so out of it makes sense in the books - his leg is artificial. Peeta had his real leg amputated due to the injury he suffered in the first games. He went into these games with a prosthetic and it’s new to him. I HATE they left it out bc it explains so much. I know movies deviate from books but I still think if they were going to do that then why make him look weak?

Gale did like Katniss in movie one. But it's interesting you say he had to see her with another guy, because that is what happened. In the books there is a character called Darius who flirts with her (he's just joking; poor Darius meets a grisly end) and Gale says that is how he realized that "he minded". So no but also yes. Meanwhile, Peeta has been in love with her since they were 5--which I think is too young to "fall in love" but I appreciate his commitment.

Just a bit of context from the books, the Mockingjay has a particularly significance sybolically within Panem. It started with Jabberjays, birds bio-engineered by the Capitol to spy on the Districts and report back to the Capitol oligarchs on things that the Districts were saying/discussing to preempt any talk of rebellion. However the Districts figured that out and instead used the Jabberjays to spread misinformation. This made the Jabberjays useless to the Capitol oligarchs so they stopped engineering Jabberjays and released them into the wild, expecting they would die out. However the Jabberjays mated with Mockingbirds, producing a new species called Mockingjays. Since then the Capitol has hated Mockingjays because they represent something that the Capitol couldn't use for it's own agenda and wanted to destroy but that instead adapted and flourished. That's the reason why the Mockingjay is the symbol of the rebellion and of Katniss.

Something I’ve never noticed until I started watching HG reactions is the way Katniss ask in a concerned manner “what happen to Cinna?” 2:50 when Effie is bringing up his new found fame. She seems worried something bad has happened to him, after her conversation with Snow it makes sense she would be worried about the people who are close to her.

Finnick is one of my favorite characters, so sweet that you spotted his kindness behind his capitol mask. As you said, once they win the games, they are still slaves to the capitol and snow’s wicked plans. No winners, just survivers. Also! Peeta was always tripping and falling because in the end of the hunger games books he actually looses one leg, he gets a mechanical one, but in the arena we see he is not fully adjusted to it yet. Sorry to be a pain in the ass with the ‘um actually 👆🤓’ but he didn’t do it for Katniss at all, especially to rile her up. That’s the complete opposite of what he wants, since his entire goal is to keep her alive over himself and riling her up so she’d do something to make them angry would make it worse. He did it purely for himself, because he felt so much disgust with Rue’s death and wanted to hold the gamemakers accountable and refused to leave in the time frame and spent 40 minutes painting Rue instead to show them how disgusting they are. And doing this he made the game makers angry at him because he wanted that negative attention on himself and not Katniss. It is different since book wise Katniss doesn’t see the painting of rue since they covered it up, but she knew peeta took way longer than he should’ve for his time and saw how angry the gamemakers were and decided to do something worse because she also wants peeta to live over herself so she knew doing something worse will put the attention back on her. Even though the movie is different Katniss does see the painting, there’s a deleted scene where peeta says ‘I didn’t mean for you to see that’ talking about the paining he did of Rue. I’m sorry to be a pain, it’s just that this is something peeta moreso did for himself which I prefer over everything he does being for Katniss you know?

Let’s just say a certain stylist we see soon is one example of what would definitely be many who get discarded. I’m not counting this as a spoiler since the movies don’t mention it but all the stylists, prep teams, mentors etc of all the tributes get executed by Snow in the third book. Remember that Plutarch mentions that being head game maker hasn’t always been the most reliable and the same would go for everyone else involved with the hunger games. Also there’s a video that analyzes Effie’s fashion/makeup evolution over the course of these movies that gives an insight to her mind

They cut out a lot of what makes Peeta great in this. He spent more time with Katniss and helped her keep out of trouble, covering for her, etc. He was baking her favorite pastry every day, working on a family heirloom with her, and they got really close. And then, the scene with Katniss' excellent shooting is because Peeta forced them to train before the games which included forcibly sobering Hamish up. Peeta came through and was there for her. And that's why she's willing to die for him to survive the games.

their plan was to get katniss out to be the mockingjay, but they knew she wouldn't agree to it without peeta, that's why they protected him so much. also in the book, peeta lost one of his leg and had to wear a prosthetic one, that made it harder for him to get around.

fun fact only some trees produce edible sap that can be drank for hydration(not the best tho) some however can be extremely dangerous and cause burns (internal and external) if touched or consumed so long story short, know what tree youre tapping lol edit- also in regards to the bodies getting removed in this one, they always have to bodies removed in the games after an incident that left both the capitol and the districts unhappy, a tribute named titus was cannibalizing the dead (they killed him in a tidal wave made by the game makers)

peeta has had actual feelings for katniss since they were kids, he wasn’t lying when he said he’d had a crush on her forever in his interview, he just knew that playing it up for the audience would benefit both himself and katniss’s chances in the games. he didn’t realize that katniss was approaching the entire romance as an act (with haymitch’s support/knowledge) until after the games ended, and as the victory tour is only 6 months after the games, he’s a teenage boy and the feelings are still fresh for him, and its gotta hurt having the girl you’re actually in love with be kissing you and saying you should get married just for an act lol

Wanna defend Peeta's weakness in the running away from the fog. They leave it out of the movies, but he lost a leg because of damage from the first games. Wondering if knowing he has a fake leg would make a difference? I've never tried to run all out in the forest with a prosthetic leg, but I can't imagine it is easy.

8:19 - 8:37 I love watching those few reactors like you who put it all together and come this realization, when you recognize WHY Haymitch's house looks like crap, why he drinks so much in an effort to numb the pain and the nightmares he undoubtedly has (notice that he woke up swinging a knife, indicating that he always sleeps with one). Now go back and re-watch that moment in the first movie when he tells these two 16 -year-old kids, "Embrace your inevitable death, and know in your hearts that there is nothing I can do to save you." He has done this for *twenty-three* years, going back to the Capitol to escort two kids to the Games, knowing that he is a laughingstock among the citizens due to his drunkenness, which is why he can't schmooze sponsors into ponying up the cash to send *expensive* gifts like water and medicine to keep his tributes alive. And then after you do that, go back and watch those dinner scenes after the first Tribute Parade, when the server comes to refill Haymitch's wine cup, and he puts his hand over the top of it, refusing more alcohol because he DOES still want to TRY to save these kids. He just got really really lucky this time in getting a guy who knows how to play the crowds (Peeta) and a girl who was too damn stubborn to die (Katniss) because she had people at home who really needed her to come back. And btw, what Peeta said on stage was real; he has been crushing on Katniss for years, but never had the nerve to tell her. (Probably because his mom is an abuser who beat her 11-year-old kid for burning a couple of loaves of bread when there was no way a kid that young should have been working the ovens. Abused kids tend to grow up to be either bullies with anger issues, or shy meek people who try not to draw any attention to themselves.)

I had not enjoyed myself this much with this franchise since I first read the books (stayed up until 6 am finishing Mockingjay, mind you) and watched the movies. I laughed, I screamed, I stressed the eff out. You and Katniss are definitely like-minded and you just kept on reading her mind trhoughout the whole thing but 49:42 in particular took me out 'cause you and Katniss be the only ones thinking that syringe was gonna do anything 😂 In the words of Haymitch, "You and a syringe agains the capitol, see this is why no one lets you make the plans". okay Gale's whipping was VERY different in the books but it wasn't important to the plot the reason was different as he was hunting with katniss & went straight to the head peacekeepers house to sell a turkey (his fave) only to see the new creep replaced him & took him straight to the town square to be beaten basically to death with the turkey hung over him to show why & he was out cold when Katniss arrived & got inthe way the guy didn't punch her he hit her with the strap right in the face there were also some nearby people who where also knocked out including a redheaded young peacekeeper named darius who just tried to tell him they are done beating the kid it's not a death sentence for poaching he's had enough after getting the complaint and knocking himout he i suppose calledthe capitol about it cause next time we see Darius he's an avox (person with their tongue cut out mostly used as servents)
