So the reason Peeta threw the bread instead of giving it to her was because his mom beats him in the books, and even though it isn't shown in the movie, he does get beaten by her. He also burnt the bread on purpose just to feed her even though he knew he would get beaten because of it.

@@KOFI_ESCAPES The handling of that scene--which is central to the whole plot--was one of the few serious missteps int he movies. I don't know if they thought everyone had read the books or what, but it was a real mistake.

It's slowly built but they bring up the bread thing later on, can't say when because spoilers. There's a lot in the films that can be missed on first watch so it's really important to listen.

@@KOFI_ESCAPESyes the movie really does not convey at all how this moment saved her life or the reflection of Peeta’s character. It’s such a shame cause it’s such a significant moment in the books.

Cato's speech to Katniss is one of my favorite nuanced moments in the movie. Tributes from districts 1 & 2 are referred to as 'the careers' because from the time they're born they're groomed and trained to enter the games and volunteer once they're old enough. They're brainwashed to view participating in the Games as glorious and honorable. Cato's speech to Katniss is him realizing the truth. That from the start, he had been raised to die. "I'm dead anyway. Always was." Cato is presented as the "villain" of the Hunger Games but he isn't. He is also a victim. He was a child who never had a chance. A child who was conditioned and doomed from the moment he was born to kill and very likely die and worst still he was manipualted into thinking it was a honor to do so. That moment with Cato is a reminder that the real villain is the Capitol, the people who created a system that turns literal children into sacrifices and killers and forces them to murder each other for amusement.

Perfectly stated! It's important to remember who the real enemy is, and that no mater how cruel and vicious some of the other tributes may seem they're all victims of circumstance outside of their control. And honestly the games have one "winner" (a more accurate term would be survivor) I can't really blame someone for fighting for their life and to go home to their family. I'm sure many of them made promises to loved ones just like our beloved Katniss.

Exactly. The careers are basically child soldiers, trained to feel no sympathy or empathy or anything even remotely humane.

This was Cinna’s first games and he volunteered to take to 12. Peeta scored in Career range, excelled in hand to hand combat, was handy with a knife and a wiz with coaxing a fire. He also had no issue with the attention Katniss was receiving. Peeta kept Katniss alive she would have died in the initial bloodbath had he not shook his head at her because she was ready to run in for the bow. Literally if Katniss was the spark Peeta was the fuel source that allowed for fire to catch.

This right here! I haven't read the book yet, but in the movie I didn't understand how anyone could think Lucy was ever safe with Snow. Every move he makes, even the seemly kind ones have ulterior motives rooted in what's best for him and what he wants. The man did not have an altruistic bone in his body, and I feel he was incapable of having genuine feelings and compassion for others that didn't somehow tie back into his own self interest. He's sooo Icky and a great villain for the story.

11:20 this is one of the moments that the movie doesn't quite bring across; Katniss didn't fumble the first shot due to panic or anything; she purposefully didn't use a bow while the others could see her to hide this talent; but every ranged weapon has its own oddities that you need to account for when aiming; this is something that annoys me when somebody picks up a gun in an action movie and perfectly lands their first shot; that isn't skill, it's sheer luck the book adresses this in inner monologue, and I am not asking for that but it would have helped if the dialogue had adressed that she hid her talent from the other tributes

Oh it's so interesting to see your impression when you have seen the prequel but not the original trilogy. President Snow gets more screentime in the next movie and the fourth. And Donald Sutherland is great. Peeta and Katniss were in the same class at school, so he really did have a crush on her, but they didn't know each other well at all. What I love about Katniss pinning Peeta up agains the wall is that afterwards he's like, "... I'm still into it." I give Cinna a TOTAL pass. Because my headcanon is that Tigris (who is also a fashion person) told him him a dark-haired girl from District 12 would get into her cousin's mind and make him sloppy. And also the book says this is his first year as a stylist in the Games and that he requested District 12 but doesn't explain why. Maybe I just love Lenny Kravtiz, idk, but I think he's fashion Jesus.

You were pretty spot on about what the three finger salute means. The book goes into a little more detail about it. Its a gesture specific to District 12 used during funerals meaning "thank you for your sacrifice" or "we honor you." I've always imagined it took on that meaning because the men that worked in the coal mines of that district would often die in mining collapses/explosions. It's kinda like the equivalent of us irl lowering our heads/hats or leaving flowers on a casket during a funeral. A better example might also be how we salute or put our hand over our hearts when a fallen soldier comes home.

Long comment‼️‼️ -its cool you watched the prequel first -they can put their names in more times every year to get grain and oil (gales name is in 42 times bc every year he puts his name in more times for food) -4:07 the “this is a potential mother” edit KILLED MEEE 😭😭 -6:25 the books get into it more but youre right about haymitch ptsd (his own games + having to mentor kids every year just for them to die) thats why you see him drinking less when he sees katniss+peeta’s potential 💕❤️ -💕✨CINNA✨💕 -9:31 loved the wiz reference lmaooo -10:11 peetas momma is a witch also thisonedumbkid23’s comment is true that she beats him i wish it was in the movie and the day after peeta gives her the bread she sees a bruise on his face at school -13:19 lucy gray and haymich are the only district 12 winners before this -for some reason i LOVE caesar flickerman -15:30 peeta always had the capital audience GAGGED‼️‼️ (loved your reaction to this 😭) -peeta and katniss go to school together also! -i think she checked peeta like that because she just didnt like that he did that without telling her, it makes more sense in the books because all of the tributes are on stage during the interviews-so when he said that the cameras went on her and she was blushing/embarrassed -24:25 thats one thing that pissed me off she did so well before the games and barely had sponsors -my heart was breaking seeing how much you loved rue -27:23 in the book the explosion took out the hearing in one of her ears (i think the right one) for the rest of the games and the capital had to fix it after -😭❤️RUE❤️😭 -i found this quote online “Rue and Prim have many similarities. Both Rue and Prim are twelve years old, so their names are only in the Reaping once. They are also very small, and on page 99, Katniss says, "Neither of them could tip the scale at seventy pounds soaking wet." Another interesting thing they have in common is that they both are named after flowers, and the flowers grow together. Even though they are both picked at the Reaping, only one girl goes into the Games, and that is Rue.” I feel like it adds a layer knowing how much katniss sees her sister in rue from the moment she saw her -I feel like snow def sees lucy in katniss I LOVED THIS REACTION 💕❤️

peeta is from the 'rich' part of the poorest district his parents have a bakery you know about the bread but this was high end bread that only peacekeepers can really purchase so it was super hearty and it kept Katniss's family alive that's why the mom beat him so much it was worth so much more then the usual stuff and he let it burn that was like throwing a lot of their income in the trash but she was trash anyway in the books he had brothers too one was to old to take his spot the other was 17 or 18 ansd able to take his spot but didn't

ok so the scene at 39:00 cato says "im dead anyways, I always was right? But i didn't know that till now". its kinda confusing if you didnt read the books so heres a quick summary of it. so cato is from district 2, a career district, which means he spent his entire life training for the games. when he says "im dead anyways" he means that even if he wins the games and goes home, hes never going to have a life outside the games (hence the "i always was right?"). and then the "but i didn't know that till now" im pretty sure is referencing cloves death because in the books they very close and when she died he realized that the games were nothing like he was taught. and also dont give my girl clove so much hate 😭. she was talking crap about rue before killing katniss because its the only way she can get sponsors because katniss outshined her district during the tribute parade as well as the scores. so she and cato agreed they would "give the audience a good show" purely out of survival. also just as a side note after clove dies cato goes and kneels by her body and begs her to stay with him. it was only a tiny paragraph but it was really cute. but yeah youre reaction was one of my favorites.

i don't think i've seen this in full since one time in theaters but it's an ahmazing time with your videos lol & even without the full experience i'm crying about rue all over again thanks to being in it through your reactions. and as always your commentary does it all, like, the having fun & being funny while also getting your thoughts on details & following threads. giving that level of attention to get in depth all the way and bringing your enthusiasm and own ideas to it always making your reactions shine it's always super interesting the kind of "meta" layer to the hunger games being fiction that can of course be taken as "entertainment," and to be made into a visual adaptation especially (vs a book) does definitely ramp up that element of how the story is about the in universe deliberate creation of an entertaining spectacle & narratives that the audience roots for, so it makes you conscious of how you engage with the stories & spectacle presented to you as the out of universe audience too...and of course that the world the story is most analagous to the US & more exploited regions within the US or the world as a whole, & then the way that irl visible conflicts can be seen as games / entertainment if it's happening Elsewhere to Others, & some people interfering to try to steer the violence, some people interfering to ameliorating it but only if they root for certain people....& like you pointed out, the questions of people who live in the capitol & participate in the games being potentially crucial help with crucial knowledge & status for individual tributes, but how far can it go when they're still participating in the games? i also think i've seen people who read the books say that katniss was coded as indigenous, adding a layer the movies don't have for her, like you saying it would be different to be black in the same situation, and like it matters that rue is a young black girl & this little sister figure, & while peeta & katniss's relationship obviously has real & significant aspects to it, that their performance of Romance is the story that matters more to the viewers who don't relate to their being from district twelve, while the fact that katniss is most truly doing all this for her little sister isn't what gets her the help, but the parallel in her helping & honoring & fighting for rue is what people who do relate to her more directly than her being a narrative or spectacle are responding to, which is the bigger problem even as it's the help from capitol viewers that keeps katniss alive, which is also a problem....also i might be misremembering (& maybe it's in the full reaction) but i think fox girl not only ate the nightlock to peace out but also to save peeta from eating it? making sure she died with some in her hand, and the cannon alert would've distracted peeta / caused katniss to return & be like yeah so don't eat that lmao top tier time as always, will definitely be watching more in this series

(i count both mockingjay films as one lmaooo) usually watching prequels first isn't recommended by most people but i feel like it doesn't matter with this series because of how perfectly everything ties together. tbosas only elevates the trilogy and it's so rare for prequels to actually contribute a valuable story to an already existing universe without seeming like a bait for nostalgia. i'm so excited for you to see just how much influence the events of the prequel had on the things that occur in the later films!

I watch reactions to see if people get how vital Peeta was to Katniss’s survival because the problem with these movies is in order to sell the love triangle they upgraded Gale and downplayed Peeta. Peeta was done dirty by the movies. If Katniss was the spark he was the air/fuel that allowed the spark to catch fire. Peeta had rooted in her heart with that act of kindness at age 11 and Katniss who had kept track of him and watched him did catch feelings during the games. His reaping did upset her and added to the misfortune of that day. The story is mostly told in her head and Katniss is an unreliable narrator who is trying to convince the reader she is not a good person and that she isn’t in love with Peeta. The star crossed lover’s angle was not the creation of the 16 year old boy. It was the adult advisors who observed the connection and energy between Peeta and Katniss. Cinna told them to hold hands in the chariot, made sure their were recognizable and dressed them in coordinated outfits and Haymitch advised them to stick together at all times and be amiable together. When Peeta asked to be coached alone I believe this is when Peeta was brought into the strategy and advised on how to bring it home in his interview. She would not have gone along willing with the strategy so she was not told about the strategy. And if she was willing to go along with the strategy she would not have been able to sell it as it is accepted through the books that she is a bad actress and can not lie. When you go into the next film please keep in mind Peeta is an amputee who lost his leg to the mutts at the end of the first game . A sampling of Katniss thoughts on Peeta in the Hunger Games. **To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. ***This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another. ***And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don't want him to die. And it's not about the sponsors. And it's not about what will happen when we get home. And it's not just that I don't want to be alone. It's him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.’ ***And then he gives me a smile that just seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me. ***One more time? For the audience?" he says. His voice isn't angry. It's hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me. I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go. ***In stark contrast to two nights ago, when I felt Peeta was a million miles away, I'm struck by his immediacy now. As we settle in, he pulls my head down to use his arm as a pillow; the other rests protectively over me even when he goes to sleep. No one has held me like this in such a long time. Since my father died and I stopped trusting my mother, no one else's arms have made me feel this safe.

1- What you say about why having kids when they could be chosen for the reaping. To that, I say, yes, there is a chance they are chosen and put through that. However, in our world, there is a chance they could get sick, or run over by a car, or anything else that could happen. 2- Probably someone told you already, but Gale's name was there 42 times because he had to put his name in more time to get more food for his mom, brothers and baby sister. 3- You are one of the first one to understand that Haymitch has PTSD. Because you have to realize, he won the 50th. So this mean , for the past 23 years, he had to go by himself and take two kids he KNEW he wouldn't be able to help. He KNEW there was no way in hell someone was going to ever sponsor kids from district 12. And then, he had to go back and leave a whole year seeing their loved ones and live with the guilt. This is why he says 'Embrace the probability of your imminent death. And know, in your heart, there is nothing I can do to save you". He isn't being an a$$h0le, he's being a broken man.

Ok! So, Gale has his name in because he takes care of his family. You get your name in once each year, and if not picked then next year you get 1+ every year before! You can also add your name for a years worth of food rations for one person. Every year he puts his name in for his mother and brothers, but never himself!

It's okay, forget about Gale, we all know Peeta is MUCH BETTER. (not spoilers, just opinion based off the first movie). Because honestly, from this movie what have we seen? Gale just scared off the deer she wanted and walked with her a bit in the forest, comforted her before she left. Then she goes to the games, where Peeta risks his life to keep her safe, has risked his safety for her before the games too, is resourceful, artistic, sensitive, shares what is desperately needed for his own injury for a much more minor one on her, tells her not to leave to get the medicine he desperately needs because he can't bare her being hurt, has good humor joking that he should use the bow, and when faced with the choice between their lives, immediately places her over him in importance, then completely trusts her with the nightlock plan in the end, and proudly holds her hand in front of Gale

Actually all the parallels you can see with Lucy Gray, Katniss and Corio are purely and mostly coincidences. The ballad of songbirds and snakes novel came out in 2020, 12 years after the first book and 8 years after the movie. And most of the scenes with president Snow in this movie weren't in the book.

The bond between Katniss and Peeta got washed out in the movies. That whole backstory was wiped out so the emotional connection when they come into the games seems random. But they went to school together, and Peeta has loved Katniss since they were little when he heard her sing. Also, after the bread, there was an incident with Peeta which was a turning point for Katniss because she decided to do anything she could to survive. That's when she went to the woods, learned to shoot her bow, and basically gained the strength to survive the Hunger Games. KAtniss acknowledges and credits Peeta for inspiring her and making her strong. When he is picked she deeply regrets it. The two of them were always hyper-aware of each other, looking at who they were friends with, etc. It is hinted at that even without the games, they would always have ended up together just like Katniss' mom who left an upper-class life to marry her dad who was poor because she fell in love with his singing. Peeta would have left his social circle to marry Katniss after falling in love with her singing. Suzanne Collins was forced into making it a love triangle by her editors because that was the trend for young adult books. Gale was supposed to be Katniss' cousin. The movies just double down on the love triangle angle.

@@KOFI_ESCAPES I have read the books multiple times. Could probably repeat them verbatim at this point. So I know the things he said and did in the source material. I can point to Chapter 14 of Mockingjay as the reason for my calling him a toxic pick me douche. The movies made Gale look better than he was and Peeta less than he was. I question anyone who walked away from the books saying team Gale because Suzanne Collins was extremely clear on what the endgame was.
