Good stuff. Oversaturation being the biggest problem. I'm parked with 25 plus vans today. Barriers to entry are low, then they get out here and can't make it work. Know your numbers! I spreadsheet and analyze every load each week. Averages, breakeven, costs, taxes, savings for maintenance. Treat it like a business because it is.

I bought my E350 Spartan body 10 years ago. I love it. It may not ride smooth, or be as comfy, quiet, fuel efficient or nice looking as a Transit, but it only has broke down 4 times so far, and was paid off the 1st 6 months after I bought It. I feel for the guys who have a decent size payment, and are having repair bills on top of that. Be strong, and hang in there! Crossville Tennessee and Elkhart, Indiana have real good Ford Dealerships.

My uncle works for Ford, he did the same thing on my F550 in the wiring harness and injectors. Something to die with the vibrations and electrical, zip ties keep it from separating and causing issues. So he said run it like that till it breaks, then replace zip ties! Simple cheap fix!

I got to thinking about your overheating problem Alan, and I had a problem with a 2009 F150 with a similar problem on my brothers truck. He changed thermostat and sensor and checked the compression everything checked ok. He was changing oil and noticed between the transmission cooler and radiator an excessive amount of leaves between the two units. He cleaned out all of the leaves and he has never had another over heating problem. He said the leaves were blocking about 25% of his cooling to his radiator. Thought I would pass that along, also you can spray some cleaner into the cores and let it set then use lite pressure to rinse it out. Too much pressure may damage the core. Hope that helps.

I've been researching expediting. You talking about rate/mi, I deliver for doordash and that's how I look at the work. Don't want to drive 8mi for $7 when when I can go 3mi for $7. I know that sounds like small money but I'm not driving a van. 😅 it used to be great but the pay is, like you said, going down and down even for the food delivery. I figure I can do way better with freight. With doordash I'm like you...I want to help people but at the same time, 100 drivers are online within a 10mi radius. Depletes the amt of work I get. Your videos are very helpful and provide a much better understanding of what to expect from this industry. Start up money is an issue for me atm. I'll unfortunately probably have to take up a 3rd job just to get started. Living in a state where the opportunities aren't great either isn't helping. I have been trying to find a fleet owner to start up with if I can do that before I try to get into trying to buy my own van.

you said it , research research research ! not an expediter myself ( as you know ) but i been researching off and on since oct ! this is a business and math is key . end of the day you need to know what your overhead is and bottom line is , it's not how much you make it's how much you bring home ( you can make $250k a year and bring home $30k or make $100k and bring home $40k which is better ??!!) . research the carrier , research the van , research fleet owner ( if you going that route ) . from my understanding like you said it's a life style , if a person has problem sleeping in a van , sleeping 2-3 hours here and there driving all times of day this ain't for them . most ( cargo van ) expediters don't make ( from 1 van ) what most people make at walmart working 40 hours a week !!! . van payment, insurance, van depreciation , fuel, health insurance , maintenance , food , some office supplies, cleaners , some hotel stays , laundry , showers , electronics etc etc etc are you costs to live out on the road . most important thing is not rate per loaded miles it's RATE PER ALL MILES ( deadhead included ) . how many empty miles to your pick up , where it's going , do you have to deadhead out after drop off 100 or 1000 miles or 40 miles . a whole lot of other shit . EDIT: AND remember your bills at home have to still be paid on top of what you spend so you need to have a cushion to rely on $2000-$3000 saved up before even starting .

Sounds like a particular carrier out of North Carolina that makes their money off of the driver instead of the load. This carrier i speak of used to charge a fee every time the fuel card is swiped, charge a $25.00 fee for a comcheck, with a comcheck limit of $75.00, they only give the drivers percentage of the charged FSC, charge an annual administration fee of $185.00, cgarge their drivers $2500 if they don't receive the BOL Within 24 hours of unloading, amongst other fees. I had enough of them, and left them 10k years ago. Sad thing is, they used to be a decent sized carrier. Now, I don't see their vehicles out here like I used to.

Allen, did you check to be sure your electric radiator fans are both working when the A/C is on? I'm sorry, but I do my own auto mechanics and if I absolutely had to go to a shop, it would be a reputable independent shop. I don't think there is a single honest car dealership out there. Their overhead cost is through the roof. To survive financially, they will cheat you. I agree, you better know and can do the math. I believe another major plus is being able to do your own maint/repairs or know where to take it to pay out the least dollars. Obviously, once you break down on the road, your at someone else's mercy. Preventive maintenance is key.

Thank you for putting out these videos. I work on a ship, but am home almost half the year and thought expedited shipping might be a good idea part time. In particular, I was thinking about buying an enclosed car trailer and shipping cars, because I have a car I like to take to the track so it would be for business and personal use. When I bought my track car is was delivered by someone who was obviously doing it as a business with nothin but a truck and a trailer. I was thinking about getting a cargo van and hauling small loads as well either with or without the trailer depending on the freight. I can figure out my expenses on my own, but what I would like is to see what rates I could get by picking up loads and how available they are on the boards. Can I see rates without having a truck yet on one of these boards? Any one or two you would recommend? Thanks again.

I think your at the point where it’s time for a new van. You could pay 4K and then have the transmission drop. Factor in the extra downtime every month. Your losing money being down.
