@@jknifgijdfui They're not SNES vs Genesis, so I didn't count them. NES vs. SMS wasn't a contest, NES clearly won in the US and Japan, SMS won in Europe. There was never any region with a real contest between the 2 systems like the 16-bit console war. And AmeriCanada land was the only place with a close contest. The Super Famicom was the clear winner in Japan and the Mega Drive was the clear winner in Europe. That being the case, it should be obvious why the main SNES vs Genesis episodes are inherently more interesting. Even if you're watching from outside AmeriCanada land, it would be interesting to learn about this period in American gaming history, because it's the most aggressive console war ever. After all, why do you think these guys made an entire channel about it decades later? It made such an impression that Americans in gaming forums still talk about it to this day.

Current gen Console wars would be totally pointless: Game on PS5 VS Game on Series X. "They're the same." "Yup." Video time: 60 seconds at best. Hey, that's an idea for you guys to make a short!
@kodybuffettwilson6 ай бұрын
They're not the same all the time, but the differences usually just come down to slight differences in framerate and resolution and sometimes platform exclusive side content. Today's consoles share much of the same internals and work with much fewer restrictions than those in previous generations. One of the big reasons this show is so compelling is because of how similar the two consoles were on the surface, but also how their distinct hardware configurations introduced significant strengths and weaknesses that resulted in ports of the same game not being guaranteed to be more similar than otherwise. Media formats play into this as well, since everything had to be flashed to a cartridge back in the day, lack of widespread internet access and server infrastructure made digital marketplaces entirely non-viable, so publishers usually had to assign separate developers to work on different console ports of a single game, especially since uniform Engines with easy baking for similar platforms weren't around back then, so they needed specialized devs familiar with the intricacies of each platform and what worked for one wouldn't directly translate to the other. The closest you could get to SNES vs Genesis style throwdowns in the modern era would be PS5/XBS vs Switch since the latter is far more limited in terms of hardware capabilities than the former, but also has the added dimension of portable play to contribute to a more interesting breakdown.

@@Troll_On_KZbin You're right about Xeno Crisis' audio. It's unfortunate, but the Genesis version is the only version that uses the sound chip properly. The SNES, Neo Geo, and so on are, for whatever reason, having the Genesis version's audio streamed instead. I don't know why they decided to keep porting it like that. For any younger viewers y'all might not understand today just how synonymous sports games and the Genesis was. Back then if you mentioned the name John Madden, NHL or FIFA people just assumed you were talking about the Sega version. Even when you went to video rental places the Genesis copies would usually be gone on the weekends especially if it had just released while the SNES versions were always available. Now there were some good baseball and basketball games on SNES like Ken Griffey Jr Major League, NCAA Basketball, NBA Jam TE, and NBA Live 96 but otherwise their sports games just got ignored or was an afterthought. Then unfortunately when Sega bungled the Saturn Launch all the game studios and sports heads migrated to the Playstation and they could never recapture the stranglehold they had on the sports video game market again.
@inceptional6 ай бұрын
The Sega Genesis was definitely the king of sports games overall, but SNES still had some very good titles of its own in various categories, like Super Soccer and International Superstar Soccer, Super Tennis, and Super Punch-Out!!, which I honestly think were three of the best in those sports across both consoles. Ice hockey and American football most definitely go to Genesis though. And a few others are mix and match like basketball, golf, baseball, wrestling, etc. But, really, if it was just a question of which system wins the sports category in the Console War, you kinda have to give it to Genesis.
@thedrunkmonkshow6 ай бұрын
@@inceptional Aww dude you just reminded me that this year is Punch-Out's 40th Anniversary! I really, really hope Nintendo announces a new game this year even if it doesn't come out in the 40th year deadline. Boxing sims come and go but Punch-Out has withstood the test of time and is still beloved. 😃

@@dcboys4195 Both systems had their strengths and weaknesses but since the Genesis had that 68k CPU which had 3 times as many registers and clocked twice as fast it ran circles around the SNES in raw computational power and why it lended itself so well to sports simulations. Not too long ago somebody actually ported Wolfenstein 3D Genesis with no SVP chip or anything helping out in the process running at a respectable 20 to 25 fps. That's wild considering even back in the day your PC needed at least a 386 32-Bit cpu to get a good frame rate like that.

Those are things that i didn't really know about (other than the bug where if you tap X on the SNES pad when going down for an injury, the player will instantly get back up and be able to skate around until the screen changes. I found it out on accident, but my brother and I always thought it was a hilarious bug cause we would just skate around and check into the other players. Growing up I ended up having this game on SNES, and I loved it. The music is definitely a strong point in this game. That being said, I find myself going back to the Genesis version. Considering that that version is the one they use for the current roster mods and the port that they made on XBOne and PS4, I feel like it was ultimately the preferred version by EA Sports as well. I really enjoyed this episode, and definitely felt like both versions have strong points. Also, the skit was hilarious too.

Lol...also I just have to ask this to Dan IN UNIVERSE character....why does he ALWAYS seem to recruit Echo the Dolphin? You know a Dolphin can't play alot of manners of sports right? Lol...ah well doesn't make the joke any less funnier, well until next time!

I remember owning a Genesis back in the day and me and my brother played NHL 94 all day...Then I was at a friends place and he had bought Super Nes and NHL 94 ..And I remember being shocked how bad The gameplay was compared to Sega.. I think he went home to my place later and was shocked how good The Sega games was ..Super Nes really sucked when it came to fast paced gamed

Sports games in particular were not a strong suit for SNES. I remember going to my friend’s house to spend the night- (this was a time when everyone I knew were getting or just got a SEGA or a SNES). He just got SNES a few months prior and just got NBA Jam. I remember asking him, did you turn the music off? There was no music during gameplay. The game was really boring on SNES. fast forward in time. He spends the night at my house, and he felt ripped off by SNES, because he commented how much more fun NBA JAM was on SEGA. (We agreed SNES had better graphics, but SEGA was better system for the game).

Nah, a Lot of fast-paced games were faster on Snes

@@braillynn Dunno about this one, but Super Smash TV is faster and better on Snes. Firepower 2000, UMK3, Lawnmower Man, B.O.B, Addams Family, Earthworm Jim 2, etc

The Megadrive/Genesis has a faster CPU (blast processing) which definitely helps in games like this

It is not that hard if you know the Alien real name and a popular Namco shooter game

I got a lot of laughs from the bug in this game that knocks over players who crash into the goalie. I once used the speed burst with Pat LaFontaine to chase an errant puck down the ice, slammed into the goalie, and he was out for the entire game!

Has the actual console hardware, OS, controller build, included Ac adapter, durability, launch package etc. ever been reviewed?

I am not familiar with this game and the impact it has on the gaming community with its annual convention. I am not familiar enough with hockey, but this was an educational experience for me. Thanks for sharing this video and for the quick Batman fact.
