I kept saying KTP rule throughout the video lolll but officially it's "KPT Rule" since that is the alphabetical order of the letters. But I suppose it doesn't matter much in which order they are...as long as you remember the letters involved 😅 If anyone has any additional tips for the topics I covered in this video, feel free to share in the comments! I'm sure everyone would be grateful for any additional tips you may have picked up along your studies 😊 P.S. Excellent! I love these types of videos. I didn't realize you could conjugate nouns but i guess you can by adding the cases. About cases, those are hard and i know you have done some videos in the past but there's so much to learn about them. Like when to use them, lol.
@ovidbrandy
@ovidbrandy 2 жыл бұрын
In general, adding case endings is called “inflection” in English. When it’s done to verbs, that’s “conjugation,” and when it’s done to nouns that’s “declension”. So, to incline words, we “conjugate” verbs and “decline” nouns.

What's really interesting is that consonants don't actually get longer. Only the space between syllables. Maybe it has to do with how agglutination was developed as well as how vowels shifted?

Indeed, the Finnish case endings that create a "closed" syllable (ending in a consonant) before them such as -N or -STA would make many words somewhat cumbersome to pronounce without consonant gradation. Before consonant gradation evolved, the case endings probably had extra vowels, so that they did not create "closed" syllables. The Finnish essive case -NA still keeps an "open" syllable before it and thus does not cause consonant gradation. The genitive -N was probably -NE before consonant gradation, and the lative -S (such as in -STA, combined with the original partitive -TA) was likely -SE back then.

Thank you for another great explanation with lots of examples to reinforce it! FYI, if it is helpful, you can distinguish between the changes in verbs and nouns by saying you conjugate verbs, but nouns have declensions. May not be helpful if people are just trying to remember that the words change. Just a thought. Susan

I can add it to my list, I can say already now say that "kaljaa" is partitive case ending I think. "euroo" is the puhekieli form of "euroa" also partitive and "viinii" is also puhekieli form of "viiniä" which again is partitive :)

@@KatChatsFinnish This one confuses me regarding plural forms... Autot vs Autoja.
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 2 жыл бұрын
@@butchukoy5913 I would say "autot" would translate to = the cars, so specific cars. So you could say "noi autot" = those cars there. And "autoja" translates to more like = cars (plural in general). So sentences more like "autoja on paljon täällä" = there are a lot of cars here (but not speaking about any cars in particular)

@okaro6595

@@butchukoy5913 Nominative plural is use mainly as a subject (koirat purevat = dogs bite). As an object it would mean all or all in a group. "söin karkit"= I ate all the candy. If you ate just some you would say "söin karkkeja" . If there are cars on the street you would say "kadulla on autoja". It is a part of the whole set of cars so one uses partitive. If one talked about specific two or more cars one would say "autot on (ovat) kadulla" (note the word order). A weird thing in Finnish is that following a number larger than one one uses a singular partitive: "kolme autoa". However if one says many cars one uses the plural (paljon autoja). I cannot see the logic in this.

"sakot". Also in normal language one would say "vahingossa". "Tahattomasti" sounds like legal language. Also there should be a comma before "koska". Sakot is generally in plural, I do not know if it is because one gets a specific amount of day fines.
