Yeah. Overselling is not always the same as lying. Sometimes you can tell truth but picking words bigger than the real thing. That's exactly what the front man of a company is supposed to do anyway, which is Todd's role in these presentations and interviews. Not saying that it's fair, but Todd gets more flame for it than he deserves. It's a common practice in marketing. You have to learn to lower your expectations yourself too.

Yeah it's cool for pushing realism a little harder and squeeze some more immersion, but I remember falling into those situations a couple of times in "Elite Dangerous". It gets very tedious and repetitive when you have to always plan your trip so you don't run out on fuel. I guess Bethesda could implement it in a much more entertaining way, but again it's a good call in my opinion as well.

I played Traveller back in the day when it was first released decades ago. There are fun ways to deal with the out of fuel situation. If in space, send out a distress signal and see who responds (friend, neutral asking for a favor in return, or an enemy). If an enemy faction responds, they force dock with your ship and you and your crew fight them fps style. If you lose you have to reload a previous save point, if you win you get their ship, now you have two ships. If you ran out while near a planet, you do a controlled crash land. Then scans show the locations of materials to get the ship repaired and fueled, involving radiant quests. If you decide to send a distress signal while on planet, the other scenario may or may not play. Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

I have gripes with Bethesda/Zeni and I have gripes with the team's ultimate direction choice. But I do not hold ill will towards Todd Howard. He gets to be both the one that gets praise and the one that gets flak. It's a double edged blade but there is an entire team, boards, directors, things could be amazing but they still have to keep a certain quota, release time, etc. etc. This man has brought us few games he personally has helped in but YEARS of entertainment. They try to improve and sometimes it doesn't work (F4 Dialogue Wheel) and look what happens. We got the old menu back in Starfield. These guys try to do better for us while keeping the suits happy and trying to reach a larger audience on release so they can continue to bring us games. I will be calm and when it drops I will buy it and make my own decisions as I do with everything. Just remember if there is a glaring issue, it's not just one man, it's a team and they are all being ultimately steered by a group. What I'm saying is, don't be pricks.

@@user-ut5ki2fi6b I hope they don't, having protagonist dialogue that's in-depth as well as voiced in an RPG of this scale would take absolutely forever to pull off. It's also not even worth it to most people because it hinders your ability to roleplay, like it doesn't matter how you different you make your characters because they'll have the same voice every single time. Based on the feedback they got and seeing how most people rejoiced when they announced Starfield's silent protagonist I can't see them trying it again anytime soon.

As someone who has played these games from Oblivion when I found it in 2011, I am so excited. I love Sci-Fi and the aesthetic is so unique in comparison to Fallout. I've been a "Bethesda RPG" fan for a long time, and with the exception of very few which match that feel (Cyberpunk, which isn't half as janky as some claim), you guys have profoundly affected my taste and expectation in games. I got my family into video games with Oblivion. My mom has consistently played ESO for years now, and has "beaten" the most recent expansion. Whatever line of games this is, I know walking away that I'll be just as excited as I always have been. You guys may have had ultima and sundog, but I have TES and Cyberpunk. I'm excited to add to that roster.

I appreciate Todd not being a bitter, angry person about people poking fun at his games and him. He's the face we see associated with these games most of the time, so criticism is going to come his way, regardless. And he has many games that are numbered amongst the best ever made, even if the modding community had a large part to play in that. Even if the modding community contributed, if Bethesda hadn't made it possible, it could never have happened, so that's appreciated, too. And it's good he seems to realize we like him and the games they make in a time when companies don't have to be likable to be profitable.

It's going to be so refreshing to have a AAA game commit to a hard(ish) sci fi. I've grown so tired of having conventional RPG magic mechanics explained away as 'plasmids' or 'augments' at the cost of a logically consistent universe, for the sake of not risking to diverge from established RPG conventions.

The thing is you expect to feel like a character that lives in the future, that knows the future and that is able to react to that world but you actually will overlay your "contemporanean" experience into that world... because is the only way to keep certain logic... Its just like pretend to emulate the "360 vision" of a chameleon on a "chameleon simulator game"... your mind cant even imagine how to process a image that doesnt have a similar POV to your one... For example, while this not really affects Starfield.... people likes to imagine in Sci fi that you would be moving like: 1- on a straight line (lets call this newtonian style) 2- you create a portal / deform space (lets call this "quantum" style) but you probably will be missing "3" how the gravity wells affect the long distance traveling.... because that knowledge takes a lot to be processed and definetelly needs to be much much simplified to make it something you could process in real time, instead taking pen and paper, and turning yourself mad like people does in NASA all the time... You can find a very nice example on a very uknown game under development, "celestial command" you may take a look on what I say here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHYgGqrhd1sZpI You can see mechanics like gravity wells, how the slingshot technique or put something in orbit would work... this is not actually "super elaborated scifi" its just based on real concepts simplified.... the truth is "a real quantum drive/hyper speed/ lightspeed" would be WAY MORE COMPLEX than this exposed mechanics... yet we want to experience being experienced on that without actually knowing anything about was is supposed to be easier. Ussually, at least for me, the biggest difference on hard sci-fi with soft sci-fi is simple, dont threat the viewer/player as stupid, create certain rules that will be working always (not randomly change them to accomodate new events/surprises, destroying the atmosphere portrayed) and have very good taste as developer to know what lore/information the player will get and which one never will be revealed... (lets remember this is an artificial narrative construction designed for the viewer) ...noone can imagine a universe atom by atom... If you talk about something interesting such what is life, humanity, space rules or the future, you need to _"create walls that blurs the skydome, so you will not realize it is indeed a well developed lie"_ blur it well enough, and most people wont be able to tell it is a lie, blur it like a master, and people may see you like a prophet (Jules Verne). In retrospective, lets point at a couple of my favorite games ever HL1 and HL2. On both you are Gordon Freeman a theoretical physicist... but in the whole game, you never really exploit your "superior knowledge"... yet Newell managed to add to the game recipe the _"playing with physics"_ motto... what also was not too exploited into the industry in that time... this made the player could find familiar mechanics to certain degree, ussually never aplied into videogames, coming from the real world that "in essence" fits the role of gordon freeman... because it somehow makes for the player to feel smarter... You never behave like a scientist at all BUT the way it was done in the correct time reinforced the role to sky limits. Obviously this is something to be experienced in the moment, and playing for first time now HL2 wont probably feel the same impact. I think every game developer out there would wish to get that same thing Newell did with physics-Freeman-HL combo.

I recently explained this in another thread, so I hope that no one minds if I copy/paste. Absolutely everything we have seen from Starfield so far tells us that this is fairly soft Sci-fi. It only has the aesthetic of hard Sci-fi. It has planetary systems whose scales are completely wrong, airplanes in space in place of spaceships, atmospheric travel even when in vacuum, ultra-dense asteroid fields, faster than light travel, etc. This is the same soft sci-fi you get from Star Wars.
