@carlr28379 ай бұрын
When a voice isn't autotuned, you can hear the emotion, and it is wonderful. Anymore, they autotune or pitch correct everything, and all voices sound semi-mechanical, and lacking in emotion. It's so wonderful to hear a real, raw, human voice, loaded with emotion. She has an absolutely wonderful voice, but the sad truth is that if they ran it through autotune, she would sound like everyone else. I can't listen to modern music because it grates on my ears, but I could listen to this over and over. In fact, I have.

Let me tell you my story about Vince. Over 20 years ago, I was in college and working at the general aviation terminal at the airport, fueling everything from small single engine planes to airliners. One night, we had a private jet come in to pick up folks after a concert. The group was comprised of Vince Gill, Amy Grant, and various band members and associates. I was a big Amy Grant fan, and my girlfriend at the time was a big Vince Gill fan (and got me on board). It was not unusual for us to handle the aviation-related needs of celebrities, but it was unusual for us to have significant interactions with them apart from carrying bags. I was out near the plane as they all unloaded from the carpool, and I was excited to hear Amy say, "Can we take a break here for a minute." They all came inside, she immediately went to the restrooms, and I thought my chance to meet her was gone. Vince was standing there talking with the entourage, and some of us got the nerve to go up and ask him for an autograph. He was extremely kind and relaxed (and much taller than I imagined). He gave me an autograph, and I explained to him how I was a big fan of his wife. Well, she was in there for quite a while, removing makeup or something, and he eventually went over to talk with his colleagues. By the time she came out, it had been a while, and I decided I wouldn't bother them because they would probably be in a hurry to leave. As it happened, at least 20 minutes after I'd mentioned to him that I was a big Amy Grant fan, she finally reappeared, and Vince came back over and took a second to call across the room and say, "Amy, this young man would like to meet you and get an autograph." Everyone kind of looked at me, and as Amy came to talk with me, I'm embarrassed to say that I was a bit tongue-tied (she was remarkably beautiful in real life), and I rambled a bit about myself and my girlfriend. Anyway, she humored my story and was very kind, and gave me an autograph as well. I've never forgotten how kind and down to earth they both were, even late at night after a concert. Good folks...

Today is my 59th birthday, so naturally, it is a day of reflection. I've known this hymn since I've been old enough to learn music. This hymn is woven throughout my being. Weddings, funerals, church meetings, or declination there of. What I'm alluding to are peace and solace in the midst of chaos on this earth we share. Hold on to peace tightly and avoid vanities.

This is how you become a musical soul. My dad, who died in '07 owned that very orange guitar behind Vince, the one on display. We wouldn't sell it if one of us needed a transplant, it's too precious. Anyway, growing up it was great when Mom said to "get things picked up cause we were gonna make music tonight." A random group of musicians came and it was a different evening every single time. My job was to be the coffee girl until it was my turn to sing. Then all too soon it was bedtime. I'd lie in bed listening to that beautiful music for hours.
