My grandparents built a cabin like yours and they lived in it all winter long. They'd gather supplies and wouldn't have to return to town until Spring. I remember it well. It wasn't very big but it had everything they needed. The little spring that ran beside the cabin was how they got water and bathed.

My grandma cooked in a woodfired oven but her bake day was with sourdough rye.... that was in Germany before the war. There was nothing but freshly ground flour, water, sourdough starter and salt. I make it every week and am kind of shaking my head at the thought of adding sugar and shortening, Seems like a sin. Guess that's the American way. Love your cabin and setup!

Back in the day on my grandparents farm we would look forward to the weekly bread bake. We knew there was going to be a special treat of warm bread slathered with fresh sweet butter sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. To this day I can’t smell bread baking without thinking about that and how special those days were.

The dimensions of the space are so perfect for comfort and the creative spirit of a kitchen. A kitchen is the closest thing to a place of worship in any abode, and this one just has the divine feel from all I can see. I collect cast iron on a small scale, and I can see I would want for little else. I dig how the sink is tucked back in that little nook too. I'm not a baker at all, but I have some good years left to learn.

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT Love the fireplace, wish i could have you build one in my cabin. One thing though, just because i am a cook, you should not open your flour until your ready to use it and upon finishing your measuring, you should replace the lid promptly. Just like the Temp regulates the yeast, the moisture content of the flour affects the dough from batch to batch. The longer flour is exposed to the elements, the more it will affect the next something you make. I digress, I will be having a cabin built in the spring as soon as the ground will allow, and you have shown me exactly what fireplace I am looking for, for my kitchen. Thank You. Happy Holidays.

Your stove is three years older than our Home Comfort and is it all cast? ' Matilda" is sheet metal and cast, with a grey glass enamel finish, like a spackle coffee pot, made in St Luis, MO. I wish the fire box was a tad larger, but it works fine. The first time I made bread in grandma's Glendale wood stove, I forgot to turn the pan. What a mess! She couldn't stop laughing, but I was in tears, with all that dough oozing down the side of the pan. Nice bread recipe. Bread tastes so good when baked in a wood stove. Have you posted a baked bean recipe Jerry? On a winter's day, when our stove is going constantly, I want to try baking Indian Pudding. ~ Diane

Looks delish! Nothin like the smells of the fresh bread plus cooking in the woodstove. Yummm!! Love your set up. I can say easy way to make more even cuts would be make a round ball and stick your finger down the center then make a 'donut' like a thick round snake and then make cuts after they are all same thickness. I saw this in Asian cooking video was very helpful. Howdy from Michigan National Forest🦝🌲🏚🌳

That was so enjoyable to watch. I love your little cabin! I have a cook wood burning stove, not like the old traditional, it's modern with the airtight firebox above and the oven below. I use it to keep my house warm in winter and to cook. I don't use my electric stove throughout the winter at all. I love old-fashioned cooking. Bread Looks Delicious!! I've Baked My Own Bread and Rolls for Years Now. I Find Comfort in this Effort. Need to Mention Though, that Country Crock and All Those Other Fake Butter Spreads are Made With "Bad Unhealthy Oils" These Oils are Bad for Your Gut and Contain Toxins That Can Cause Inflamation in Body Joints. Do The Research. Plain Old Butter is the Best to Use in Moderation. It's Just Cream From the Cow and No Processed Seed Oils. Exceptions are Avocado and Pure Olive Oils. These Oils are the Good Fats Your Body Needs. Just Some Good Information!!

You're so right. Palm, canola, soy, cottonseed, corn oil- are nutritional no-no's! I'm not terribly strict, but I won't buy them. Most are GMO, and unhealthy even if not. I remember Smart Balance was okay if that's all that was around. That bread deserves the best butter in town!

I agree with all these remarks. Margarine is only 1 chemical component away from plastic. It was invented to try n make plastics (& for grease for parts) around ww2 & also used to replace reg butter bc it was cheaper. Butter was almost non existent in the depression era (except for the rich). Most ppl used lard or some kind of grease for breads & toast. That was a sm portion of research I done. Ever since, I began using real butter, I refuse the fake stuff. The more ingredients in something usu leads to fake foods, which God does not mean for human consumption. He made our bodies so im sure He knows what's best! Read in Deut what is best for our bodies to consume. This bread looks amazing!!! Gonna have to try this recipe when my kids come home. Thanks for sharing this bread recipe. God bless n keep you all. 😋 yum! 🙏☺

Edit:. Here's something you could try that my adult son likes. Buy some organic butter. Let it sit in the counter long enough for it to become soft. Take some dill weed and minced onion (or whatever herbs you prefer) and mix them into the butter. Try that on your bread. Btw, your bread loaves were gorgeous.
