As the construction industry struggles with the skilled trade gap, why are we ignoring 50% of the population as a source for talent? My take on the issue, the reason, and the solution.

Thanks again for watching and commenting. I feel like I had heard women have better fine motor skills as well, but I don’t know when or where I heard it so didn’t include that. I wouldn’t doubt it!

@@groundtoglory well typically their brain is wired to multitask much better then men's minds, so running on the fly they might have a plus, but I think might just be oppratunities and work environ, and there are fewer among the young willing to get really dirty, but depends who you ask, our local highschool started up a construction trades enginering course, and offer the oppratunity to certify for test to run heavy equiptment as well as modular building and designing, and of course industrial arts tech, 3d printing, cnc machining, manufacturing tech that many are taking advantage of, we always had industrial tech to learn about stuff and still had shop classes though they were trying to draw that down after I finished highschool, but vocational school and classes in auto were always available but you had to travel to the 4 county school for it, but they started to bring it back after realizing we done even have enough factory workers to make the stuff or head into the trades or get certification, I never ran an excavator but have worked around historical railroad equiptment, a steam loco, the opratunities for pay jobs is not huge but there is great demand for those that can do the dirty grunt work of needle scaling the way stuff is cleaned and a fair deal of woodworking, which I been around since age of 6, as well as from time to time spiking down rail and doing fabrication prep grinding or de rusting beveling and the like

They are great books! Maddie’s book attention span is still a little short for them, but I’m looking forward to sharing them with her soon! Thanks for watching Robert!

Saw in a video awhile back that you called your excavator Mary Anne. I immediately went to one of my favorite books as a child and wondered if that was the reason behind the name. Good to know it was. As for women in the trades, more power to them. My sister in law, who is now 70, is a retired union electrician. She went in at a time when it was strictly a man's world, and underwent a lot of hazing etc. Once she proved she was tough enough to take it and able to dish it out as well, they pretty much left her alone and accepted her as one of the guys. First day on the job site in mid July, they dumped a bucket of ice water on her. Non plussed, she immediately smiled said thanks, it was really hot out and that was a big help cooling her down, and went on about her work. That crew pretty much left her alone after that. A few weeks later a newbie guy joined the crew and they did the same thing to him. He reacted poorly, got upset, and pretty much made himself a target for more pranks from then on out.

James, great story! Construction isn’t for the faint of heart, wasn’t back in the day, and still isn’t. There’s an element of toughness that needs to be present no matter who you are talking about, because there’s gonna be times your life is literally in the others hands. You want to know there’s some mental toughness and poise under pressure.

Have you never watched Gold Rush ? on Discover ? the operators are appox 40% women on all forms of heavy equipment

I have seen gold rush. I can tell you from experience on real job sites the ratio is nowhere near that close. If you were being funny, that is a good one. We have experience working on a project for another discovery show where the reality of the job and the reality the show portrayed at air time, were quite a ways apart. 🤣 thanks for watching.

What are your suggestions beyond encouraging a young person to pursue such a career? Seems a bit intimidating. to an outsider. Any insight will be welcome. Thank you.

Great question! So 1st someone has got to want to do it. I think that’s where the passion comes in. I think that’s the part that gets sparked as a youngster. Usually you’re going to do some grunt work before you get your hands on the equipment. My suggestion would be to find a company that does this kind of work that’s hiring; they aren’t hard to find. A summer job is a great time to do it if you’re younger. 1. Show up and be RELIABLE. 2. Bring a good attitude. 3. Work hard at the basics and try to make sure you don’t have to be told things more than once. 4. Ask for opportunities to operate. We typically start new operators backfilling. It’s usually a good time to learn to manipulate the machine and move dirt. Trenching comes next. We always preach precision over speed, the speed will come with experience. Tearing stuff up makes it hard for an employer to want to give more opportunities for experience. An excavating company wants operators, you just might have to put your time in on the ground before you get the chance. Another thing to consider would be if a high school offers a trade exchange program. Here in Indiana students can get placed at a trade school for 1 semester in an equipment operating program if their high school doesn’t offer a program. (Most don’t). As I understand the high school is supposed to pay the tuition, so students might have to lean on the guidance counselor a bit to get the chance. At Lamb Excavating everybody does it all. We don’t have pure operators, and pure laborers. Some days you might run a machine most of the day, most you do some of everything, and some days you might hardly get in a machine. Whatever it takes to get the job done. Thanks for checking out our video…hope to see you back!

It’s crazy how your daughter stayed focused on one thing for that long. Most 1.5 year olds can only stay that focused to an iPad for that long.
