www.homebuildingandrepairs.com... Click on this link for more information about garage repairs, building and design. In this video I will provide you with an example of what the wood framing would look like for a two car garage with a vaulted or cathedral ceiling and ridge beam. This design might be helpful for people who need to use the space above the ceiling for a variety of different reasons.

Post and beam always a good choice. For this garage rather than increasing the portal beam size and massive ridge beam for rafters. Maybe using scissor trusses would also be a good choice. Thanks for the vid.

Great idea and remember these are individual examples for a specific design. Here's a link to one of our playlists of different types of roofs that can be used for two-car garage. kzbin.info/aero/PLC0UeuIWsWeXWloH6IvAiWXHDkwZBx9GZ

I want to remove the ties from my 17’x10’ shed and add a ridge beam under the peak to support the rafters. The rafters are currently fastened together at the peak without a ridge board present. Is it possible to place the ridge beam UNDER them and fasten them to the beam? In other words, the beam wouldn’t be in between the rafters like in your model.

Question, I want to build a 30 x 40 workshop with max storage above. My idea is a center beam (3 2x10) running the 40 ft . Trusses with 9/12 pitch. Is this doable, truss bottom chord 2x4 or 2x6?

shouldn't rafters rest on the ridge beam ? as it looks like rafters are attached / joined alongside the ridge beam 1:14 . We are planning to insulate a similar roof with cob ( clay ) so will have to be extremely solid

That’s interesting. I’ve been trying to figure out what the rod in my garage was needing. It doesn’t have any rafters tires or ceiling joists. Someone gave a half hearted effort at rafter ties I think but they aren’t really very sound. The problem I have after watching your video is the “Ridge beam” is only a 1/2” or so piece of shiplap. With the ridge beam construction process why doesn’t the roof settle downward and push the walls out?

Hello, I have a question regarding the Ridge Beam its self, is that normal wood or is it LVL?

I know you might not have that many views but you don't know how incredibly important this information is to me. I have a question if the walls of the building are made out of block and concrete, do you still need to add ceiling joists?

I cannot provide you with structural engineering information, but imagine that you would. I've seen walk walls bow out in the center that didn't have ceiling joist or rafter ties.

The fact that you are asking means the answer is yes. If the block wall or concrete wall had been designed to take the horizontal load that would only be because you would have asked for that feature. If you did not asked for it then it does not have it so the ceiling joist is needed for that.

Wow thank you for all the informative videos. Do you think this design would hold up to 150-180 mph winds? Hurricanes are always a concern down here in Florida.

Awesome videos sir! I’m planning a 42’ wide by 40’ deep garage attached to the house on one end. And the other end will be a hip roof. I would like my ceilings to be open throughout the garage. So it will attach to the home on the west side. Ridge beam running west to east. 3 10’ wide doors on the north side, hip roof on the east side. I don’t know if you take requests but that would be awesome if you could make a video like this for it.

I think you will find what you're looking for the website. Click on the remodeling tab, then home additions and you might even want to check out some of the roof framing videos as well. Let me know if you can't find what you're looking for.

I am building an out building with roof construction just like this. I would like to not use hardware to attach the rafters to the ridge beam. Any suggestions on how to do that. I would like the rafters on both sides to line up with each other just like in your animation.

I cannot provide you with structural engineering advice, because that's all going to depend upon the individual project, but can tell you that I've used joist hangers and hurricane ties to attach the roof rafters to a ridge beam.

I have a garage just like this built in 1930's. It is a 20 x20 and has two split doors that swing out. Both doors are heavy and sagging. How would I go about reinforcing them? Also I would like to put in some over head storage and not sure how to do that either. Thanks
@constructionideas
@constructionideas 3 жыл бұрын
By reinforcing them you would be adding more weight, maybe it's time for a new door. I've dealt with this before and had one of the springs break and it shot across the garage like a bullet (I was worried about being injured) and that was when I got a light weight door.

How wide of a room can you do that. I'm asking because of a open ceiling like that on a home looking at building , then placing faux beams up against the dry wall. I also want the roof cavity to be at least 1' 1'2 thick? Like you might see on mountain style homes.

Does this set up require 2x supporting posts on each end of the ridge beam? Would it work with an attached garage where there is a house door right in the middle--in that case would the house door be in the way of the ridge beam? Thanks.

All beams should be specified by ENG depending on snow loads in your region.
