The fastest floor installation ever. That said, I am not crazy about the obvious diagonal pattern running cross the floor. Although it would be slower to lay, a random choice of board lengths would, I think, give a much better overall effect. Plus the finish on some of the skirting board ends was poor with uneven gaps.
@4evergav3 жыл бұрын
You are completely correct. I am a union trained 37 year hardwood installer and finisher. That floor is installed incorrectly including the underlayment.

@@4evergav what was wrong with the underlayment btw? is it because it doesn't overlap enough and not taped down? what's the correct method by the book in terms of putting down underlayment? i usually buy the ones with the adhesive layer on top, so i just overlap it, dont really need to tape it

@squirts13 жыл бұрын
It's generally more efficient to do them randomly and as you said looks much better. This guy just started several rows ta the same time cutting each board about 6" different from the previous one. His method is good, the product could be slightly nicer with more careful cuts, but I bet he saves 20% the time just with the fast cuts. I’ve seen all sorts of construction practices in Thailand, on the two houses that I had built and on other people’s houses. The guy here went barefoot but the proper construction shoes in Thailand are flip flops. They tie bamboo together for ladders and scaffolding. They consume an amazing number of m-80 bottles per day to stay awake. They are great workers but if you ask them if they can do plumbing, electrical, or (in my case) landscape sprinkler systems, they will always say “can do,” even if they don’t have the slightest idea of how to do it. That results in having to fire them and bring in a specialist. I have my trees trimmed every year or two and I’m always amazed that they climb the trees barefoot with a machete. I do what I can from the ground with a cordless saws all.

This guy speed is incredible and looks comfortable doing the job, obviously he does that for a living, I am not a profesional installer but have installed few floors myself, but there are few things that I've noticed that's contrary to what i was told; One is the amount of material waisted, the second is, the stair pattern on the floor is well defined, meaning the joints are not fully locked at the end, maybe that's the design intended, i dont know but i was told that the idea is to make it appear as a seameless surface, not an obvious pattern between the end joints. And the third is, the fact that there is no space in between wall and laminate, which as i understand it, is necessary for the laminate planks to expand and therefore, evading from possible future warping.

This is exactly how NOT to install a pre finished floor. Your eye will pick up a repeat pattern as soon as you walk in the room. Joints should be staggered and never closer than 6” to 8” from adjacent row. We call this a staircase pattern. Its the lazy way of doing things. We will make subs re do the job to our customers expectations. Our customers would not accept this job. On the other hand, if you don’t know what it should look like, then its all good. As a flooring contractor myself I have to say this video should rather say: "How NOT to install a floor". There are so many things to number that I disagree with, especially with the final product, waste, method and delivery. First off, yeah so many people say he didn't leave expansion gaps, but I have noticed he put some pieces of broken laminate as spacers early on at the start after he finished up a few rows. I still think it is not sufficient and plus that poor cheap underlay was not seamed at the joints 3 inches away from wall and not to mention this is all on concrete where humidity thrives. Secondly, I was almost revolted at the way he started the rows, all in stairs without staggering the joints, Yes he didn't have any ugly joint over joint but visually it looks like a bunch of stairs and if it ever buckles, which it will, the whole floor will come apart along to never ending stair joints. As far as delivery and method, yes he didn't seam very safe or considerate of the boards, I think i even saw him hitting the top of a board with a hammer once. a ton of waste, pieces that can be used to start other rows or at least use the cutout pieces for ends. IN any way, finishing in half an hour doesn't win you a medal. Putting it on youtube for criticism is not any wiser either. People should always hire a professional when it comes to installing floors.

@MarcusAnything16 жыл бұрын
Started out great then went downhill from there.......like others have said the joints are too close together to be structurally sound. That's the main problem. Love the cancer saw also, cutting the lacquer coating thats on the laminate all the time will cause brain damage in the long run. It's nice the floor he's working on is Brand New construction, square, no obstacles to slow you down. The houses I work on are out of square with registers in the floor and a closet and possibly an off angle wall. This is unrealistic flooring example, makes it look easier than anything you'll ever work on and you can't follow how he installs it. DIY people should steer clear of this video.

My only suggestion is to avoid the pattern in your layout of the planks.
@haighyvshaighy4 жыл бұрын
Na I like the way I lay out my planks in a random pattern. All I saw with that floor was the diagonal seams all running the same direction. Zipper effect. I would have had you tear it all up. Honestly I’ve never seen a floor laid like that in the north eastern US. It’s a speedy way to get the job done faster that’s about it.

How so? My floors on the second floor of my home 90 year old oak laid in a random pattern and holding fine.
@haighyvshaighy4 жыл бұрын
Let me be clear and make sure we both know what we’re talking about. An H pattern is a layout where all the board ends at the same points every other row creating an H appearance. I’m not talking about doing an H pattern in my layouts. I lay random board patterns with a variety. The eye sees a floor with no particular pattern, a continuity throughout the whole floor. With Your layout the eye is drawn to those diagonal seams. The brain tries to make sense of what it’s looking at and finds patterns in everything. As an installer you might not find issue with that but an interior designer would find that as a distraction. Random seams is the way to go. I don’t use laminate or vinyl flooring so maybe it’s different rules for those materials.

@@haighyvshaighy how do you lay your planks. Do you stagger?
@haighyvshaighy4 жыл бұрын
@@stayreal5083 I lay staggered. Try to avoid any end joints from being less than 12” from another. The idea of a floor is to avoid an unintentional pattern and keep continuity.

Am not an installer but aren't you suppose to leave a small gap at the edges to allow for wood expansion, therefore avoiding floor from lifting, Warping?

he checks for gap 3:48 thats the expansion gap as for the locking system u smack that flush

take this video down before someone thinks this is the correct way to install flooring.
@bludika5 жыл бұрын
yea lmao. the floor looks like shit, and i bet it'll start separating and lifting within a year or less hahahah. Just because someone has the physical ability to do such a job doesn't mean they know how to do the job properly.

Never install pieces under 8 inches for ppl that are watching this and diy, and always mix boards from different boxes to mix the design and pattern of the floor

Serious question... I'm looking at tackling my house this summer, what about those corner end pieces. ? Thanks in advance.
@marinahenraath38494 жыл бұрын
Why is he cutting the new pieces before he uses them, instead of using the end piece in the beginning of new lane?
@audioeeze83964 жыл бұрын
clo289, pick up a dovetail saw and cut the bottom edge of your door trim( using a small piece of flooring as a guide for the thickness to cut) then slide the flooring underneath. That way there is no caulking or any tiny cuts that could be off track. Much cleaner look. Search dovetail saw on KZbin . Hope that helped.
