I have been a lemon law attorney for 21 years, representing both car companies and consumers. Toyota, Lexus and Mazda have been the standard for a long time. Toyota and Lexus have had some big issues with engines and braking in 22 and 23 models, so it will be interesting to see if this impacts their reliability rankings going forward.

I had a 2007 Subaru for 12 years I bought new, sold in 2019. During that time it had to have a transmission overhaul, the all wheel drive had to have work, needed a new radiator, the interior was kind of cheap, had to repair oil leak, A/C stopped working. I will never get another. Before that I had Toyota, went back to that forever.

Last time it quit in the middle of an intersection. The dealership has looked at it several times and cannot find anything wrong with it. We will look at Toyota or Mazda.

I learned that people in states that bought Subaru for decades because of the 4 wheel drive, New England states, CO anywhere there are snowy winters, now they are buying Mazda and Toyota.

I bought a 2009 Honda Fit new. It has covered 191,000 miles with no major repairs. Not once has it failed to start or needed to be towed. Another definite keeper!

Just pick a Japanese car. European cars might be beautiful, and American cars may be more patriotic, but Japanese cars are much more reliable. If you can afford, choose Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura. They are not only just reliable, but also good looking.

I own an Mazda mx5 here in Japan, one day I joined a car meeting and there’s a RX7 FD3s only one owner and that car clocked 320K (KM) on its odometer. He did one overhaul and that beauty still running! By the way also I met others mx5’s with 200K only regular maintenance…

I'm a long-term CR member and I've not been surveyed about cars, much less any consumer products. To that end, my 2012 Honda CR-V, EX-L with 170k+ miles is humming along quite well, thank you. Having said that, most new cars, including Honda and Toyota models, with CVT transmissions, smaller, turbocharged engines, and quality-related issues are expensive junk. Hopefully, this situation is remediated soon.

$50k isn't really luxury car territory in 2024 -- it's the top end of the economy car market. New luxury cars would start up at about 70-80k. Anyway, while I'm sure the hosts are all sufficiently wealthy, the smart wealthy people out there still care about reliability.

I bought a 2002 Toyota Echo new and put 171,000 miles on it with very few minor issues. I sold it to a guy who got it up to 286,000 miles but a distracted driver broadsided and totaled it. Otherwise that car probably would have easily made it to 350,000 miles.

I had a '97 Toyota 4 Runner Limited I bought with 175,000 miles on it. Daily driver up to 363,000 miles. I sold it when a head gasket started leaking internally into the cylinder. All the electric stuff still worked and it was loaded.

I'm not really surprised, the wife and I have had bad luck with two Honda's in a row which made us switch to Toyota exclusively and we were a Honda household for 15+ years (although we bought our oldest son a used 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid for his first car this year which was our first non-Japanese car purchase lol), Honda's quality as of recent seems hit or miss unfortunately.

They had some CVT Trans issues for a few years and some major issues with their 1.5Turbo engine (fuel was getting past the rings into the engine oil). If you have anything with their K series engines you have much more reliable engine..as reliable as anything mentioned in the CR reports if not more.

Nice to see Mazda make the list. I see lots of them on the road here in So. Ca. Although not perfect, they are a good value. I especially like their automatic transmissions over a CVT. Stick with a non turbo model for longer engine life.

So they only use their members/ subscribers as test subjects. I wish they would give more info as to what kind of driving habits their subscribers have. Do they have long driving commutes, how often do they do regular maintenance. Do they use a dealership to do all repair work or do they use a cheaper alternative. I wish they would have a broader pool of test subjects than just their subscribers.

Stellantis products in Europe have a bad rep. Many of them use a wet belt that can fail early and wreck the engine. Also they include former GM brands, Opel and Vauxhall, whose reputation has been patchy since the nineties.

I call BS. HONDA is the best and most reliable car there is. PERIOD! I have a Honda and a Mercedes. My Honda is 22 years old and has 225K miles, yet, it is more reliable than the Mercedes that's 15 years old and has half of the miles on it. The engine still sounds great, that's why I will not sell it.

Honda has had 2 major issues of late knocking them of the list. They had 3-4 years of bad CVT transmissions and many of the 1.5 Turbos had issues with fuel washing down the cylinder walls past the rings and into the engine oil.
