THANK you so so much! I have been struggling with putting it all together and finding my groove. I'm in Expanded Medical Coding. Trying to remember the guidelines and policies while not leaving anything out has been a monster! Especially when my professors are asking for CM PCS AND CPT codes even when they don't apply, leaving out Meds, Injections, etc when they do apply. UGH! My head is spinning and I am spent! So again, thank you, your walk through these scenarios is an absolute blessing! A lot less talk and a lot more action!

Different strokes for different folks! I definitely find the different ways instructors work to be interesting. I sat in on a session the other month where an instructor just had the students do the problems on their own and then give the answers and it sort of helped open my eyes on ways to explain things better.

Can you explain how to spot the key words when you code signs and symptoms. I get confused a lot trying to figure it out.

Thank you for the good explanation. My AAPC teacher wasn't able to explain why breast size is defined by a diagnosis and not just an encounter for cosmetic surgery, haha. i thought it's quite anti-body-positivity to call too large or too small breasts diseased in any way just because they are not standard size, but turns out, like everything in coding, it serves a purpose. Coding is so beautiful, in being so logical! 👑

I have a question, if you don't mind helping me with. For the Reduction Mammaplasty case study, would you code the back and shoulder pain? If you look up macromastia, back and shoulder pain are symptoms of this diagnosis. In the guidelines, it says that if the symptoms are an integral part of a disease process, then you would not code them separately. Please help me understand this, thank you!

Ty for this video. I was curious how many transcripts are coders required to complete per day? Is there an average or a quota? Does it differ from employer to employer?
@ContempoCoding4 жыл бұрын
It varies greatly. There's some types of services that can be coded very quickly and others that are more complicated (neurosurgery or radiation oncology for example) and take more time. So while there are productivity standards, it really depends on what type of services you're coding and even things like if you're working with an efficient EMR or having to wrangle a messy billing system.
@SpryGuy2894 жыл бұрын
Ty for the reply :) My 2021 CPT and ICD-10 books arrived this week. HCPCS I guess won't drop till December. I am a little lost in the woods as I can't afford to take proper classes at this time. I think I'm going to try and see if I can at least take online A&P and Medical terminology for free at a local CC. But I really feel like I have no direction as to how to study at this point. TL;DR- Really excited, no idea what I'm doing.

So, in the real world of coding, you must read the entire op report in order to verify that the pre-op/post-op/dx is correct prior to selecting codes, correct? Unlike in taking the CPC exam where you must skim through it quick finding the key words to match the description of the correct code in the choices given within 2 minutes or less. Time management is still key.
@ContempoCoding4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! After a while you learn the parts you can usually "skim" (prepping the patient, for example) and what key words to pull out to support the coding. And how to look out for things that may be billable but the provider didn't list in the procedure heading.
@Nolepiere4 жыл бұрын
@@ContempoCoding This is the question I was going to ask because I've been getting some of my case questions wrong. I was looking at the top only for dx, procedure, etc. so during the CPC exam is it normal for key information to be in the op report? I was so worried about time everytime I started reading through one, especially because I don't always understand what;s being done and I feel like im just going to confuse myself.
@arielle-cheriepaterson87693 жыл бұрын
Does the provider write those PROCEDURE notes or is this done by someone else?

@ContempoCoding4 жыл бұрын
The more you know, the faster your can code, and the better your productivity will be. You will need to know it for the exam but in practice you can Google, it will just take extra time then. If you don't know medical terminology, get some books and some flashcards and start studying. Part of the certification exam is just questions on med term.
