Have to appreciate the irony : 1) French man concern about Democracy. After World War 2, Having just been occupied by (collaborated with) Germany, France with its UNIVERSAL values of Libert/ Egalite /Fraternite...went back to occupy Vietnam (with support of the US ) and its other colonies and exploit them. Fortunately they suffered a great defeat in the hands of the 'Communist' Vietnamese at Dien Bien Phu. In steps Uncle Sam in another destructive war in interest of defending 'Liberal Democracy' to the misery of Vietnam. 2) Israeli man worried about rights in HK and then China and people aspiring for greater freedom when their stomachs are full quoting some ism. So maybe that's why Israel keeps Palestinians hungry and without much basic rights. 3) New York Times fellow is the most pathetic. Presumptive and Aggressive but prefers to call others such. Worried about extradition of Criminals from Taiwan to Mainland or HK (initiated by HK)? What is rendition and CIA sponsored Prison camps during War on Terror with ZERO oversight? Sadly Many Asians (see black clad hooligans in HK) prefer to read their news from Western sopurces or listen to these great Liberal Democracy preachers...wave British and American flags. What do those represent? Did the British give HK rights when they were in charge? Patten came over having lost an election and used the final years in HK to save his own political bacon. BUT did HK citizens get granted British citizenship? I remember many Western people predicting HK would collapse when China took over then. Will these HK people be welcome with open arms in Trump's USA? Maybe if they have wall building skills... You only have to look at the number of viewers for this video to realise most people prefer to see what they want to and are less open than they think. Shame.;)

The proportion of so-called pro-democracy group in China is dramatically decreasing recent years especially after the disgusting performance in HK enabled by Western intelligent agency. I would argue these chaos in HK, on one hand, do trapped China in a awkward scenario, but on the other hand, helped ordinary Chinese people to realise that democracy is not what they want. what Westerners are doing are not consistent with their goals to spread the riots all over China's territory. But it will never happen any more judged from my personal experience (the best timing is around 2008, there is a large proportion of people worshiping democracy, but now, it is the least minority and still decreasing ).

If ordinary people want to vote for political leaders, they need to have a political background or corresponding academic qualifications. Many westerners are harping about freedom of speech but do not realized they really don’t have one. A bad comment on yt is taken down all the time for example. The west don’t understand how the chinese view the ccp and why are platforms like FB or YT are banned. Most chinese view their ccp gov as their father or head of the family by heart due to recent successful track record. Regarding the ban of FB or YT, as I mentioned above, they can control what they want you to see which is dangerous for any country. No difference to why so many countries ban porns or etc. If a platform that can be used by the US to brainwash their people, why would any country allow it? Freedom comes with responsibility. Do you have the freedom to kill? Same thing

Democracy has its high threshold. The high-quality leader as highlighted by Professor Fukuyama, the late founding father of Singapore Mr Lee Kwan Yes had mentioned repeatedly, for Democracy system to shine, 2 prerequisites must comply, 1/ 60 % of its population is middle income group 2/ 60%and higher of its population is middle-class, only then will Democracy system succeed, or else we won’t see only a regressive democracy system. Case in point: America today and my home country.

Democracy is fundamentally flawed. Politicians will always try to play a group of people against another to generate votes. This will inevitably lead to a very divided society. In an authoritarian it is the shepherd who leads the ship, while in a democracy it is the other way around. How is that good?

But look at the Chinese citizen side of the story. Same goods as the other parts of the world, we have to pay more. Look at the auto price, the house price, the drug price. If this is still globalized country, I certainly don’t agree.

Chinese are very pragmatic people. They are pro "whatever works well". I would bet they will switch to democracy if you can show them how well liberal democracy is, how it will lift people out of poverty, build a safer society, efficient government, etc.

He did answer the question. He said that terms limits have been removed but that China still has retirement customs. Now, that's a very diplomatic answer. The real answer to the question is the following: Xi Jinping is not necessarily emperor for life because his position as President of China is dependent on his ability to ensure high GDP growth (between 6-8%). As long as he is able to deliver high economic growth, he will remain president. If he is unable to deliver that at some point, he will either be asked to step down or violently deposed. Obviously someone like Eric Li, who represents China on the world stage, cannot give such a blunt answer.

@@bobbarkeriii2597 He answered the question well. This notion that Xi is "Leader for life" was a western propaganda tool for the masses. The removal of two-term limits is all that China has done ... which, is absolutely no different than what is done in Germany, Canada, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The NYT question was full of arrogance in the way the question was framed. It does not surprise me that a US media giant is reciting western propaganda ... that's why the NYT, FOX and CNN spend much time reporting "opinion" instead of "news". Who needs "facts" when "opinion" alone is sufficient!

@@leahcasey2678 Yes, Russia eliminated term limits as well. So did Belarus (see the news lately?) Gemany, etc . never had term limits. @@thomaslong8448 In my view, he was afraid to answer it. He has said in the past (TED) that China has term limits for presidents in order to prevent one president from seizing power for a long time. I think he was afraid to contradict himself here. Many people were unhappy that Xi became president without term limits. Of course, they are afraid to say that now, due to fear of reprisal.

@@bobbarkeriii2597 I watched TED too. Eric didn't say term limit on Presidents. According to the Gini Index, income inequality in China is one of the worst in the world. Income inequality has been rising rapidly in China and now surpasses that of the U.S. by a large margin, say University of Michigan researchers. ... They found that the Gini coefficient for family income in China is now around 0.55 compared to 0.45 in the U.S. In 1980, China's Gini coefficient was 0.30.

The Gini coefficient is meaningless in large countries. Most people will not leave their area. In their own region, the gap between rich and poor is not obvious, so there will be no social problems. If you want to discuss the Gini coefficient, limit it to cities or small countries.
