uuuh a laquered bulkhead… anyway… I refit a boat from 1975 since a few years now. Its a big part of my hobby and for me it's the same fun as the sailing itself. Thanks for the videos and please keep up the great work! It's really helpful to see how (and why) certain things are done by a professional shipwright. And thanks Jamie answering all that questions - those are great insights!

I have owned my contessa since 2018. I think what is special for me is the "row away factor" she is the prettiest thing! Then you have the sailing ability, seaworthyness etc. If you don't have a contessa, you might not know that feeling. Similarly with the electric conversion questions. So I took out my yanmar 2gm20, sold it and put in a 8 KW lynch motor electric. All diy and my reasons eere varied Simplicity being the first Sailability also....i have lost about 75 kgs of weight. The green issue? Well if you are still using lead acid batteries, that alone is probably more unsustainable over a decade than my lifepo4s....lifepo4s are not the same as lion! But like the row away factor, it's only when you have the electric that you realise the benefits. Yes range is low, although my fuel tank will refill.... but my goodness! Chugging down the river without chugging, instant power if you fluff a tack (heaven forbid!) Coming back up the river and the batteries have recharged whilst sailing. Loving having a contessa loving that it's electric 😊

Fantastic video. Really enjoyable and great that you answered my question :-0). And some other great questions. Would be great if Jamie was willing to do a detailed cost breakdown when it is all finished. That would be informative and helpful. Maybe another Q&A type video would be cool? Definitely one of the best sailing refit channels :-)

Do you feel safe? On a Contessa 32! Look up Fastnet Race 1979. These boats set the "Gold Standard" for safety in the late 70s and early 80s.

Outstanding guys…fair play Jamie just going for something you truly want..I’d love to know figures for everything as watching George and all the other contessa enthusiasts (Coric) here on KZbin makes me what to jump on the band wagon as Iv just sold my Sadler 25 and looking to upgrade and being in Ireland there are very few co32 and i know if George is doing the work it top class so who knows we might need some help from George too.

The gelcoat is custom colour matched. I get the windows made for me but also supply them to owners that want to fit themselves. Email me if interested.

fully agree on the electric position. do i think electric might be the future? i do. are we there yet? no. like it was said maybe in 15 years when the energy density in batteries and quick charging (from whatever source) are WAY cheaper and established, then yes. not to mention the green side...electric is not that green. ive spent more than i would like to admit to rebuild my yanmar 2GM20 but i know that, if i maintain it properly i have 30 years more to enjoy on that engine. Still, comparing the spares bought to the price point for an actual electric (the batteries is where the money is actually), is incomparably less. about getting a bigger boat: "find the smaller boat you can fit into, not the biggest you can afford". people have a tough time getting this one. it usually takes buying a big boat and then realising the amount of money involved. to each its own, for sure there were ppl on the way saying: you dont need that big a boat......

why do people in the UK not consider the faster Albin Ballad?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Is it faster? Not sure it is, the ballad is a slightly smaller boat I think but still very capable. I’d need to compare ratings to see which is deemed faster.

I also wouldn't convert Lottie to electric, but not for anything related to range anxiety or lost capability, I just think electric motors offer the most in outboard form and converting a Contessa 32 to an outboard would be a crime. I've been on a boat which had twin 416 chainplates protruding abaft for which the owner had fabricated brackets for an outboard and half-ladder. Originally only installing one for a series drogue, but disliking how it made the stern asymmetrical he installed a matching one. If I would convert to electric that's how I'd do it, because with the attachments stowed the polished chainplates didn't spoil the lines or views of the stern, they looked as if they belonged. There needs to be more benefit than some self-satisfaction of "going green" for me. Like eliminating a bunch of thru-hulls and seacocks, removing maintenance items, reducing ongoing cost of ownership, reducing fuel aboard, that sort of thing. Not some intangible and arguably illusory benefit which in the scheme of things is irrelevant. To cut a long comment short; I think Jamie made the right decision!

For the engine, there are also people who don't sail with an auxiliary engine, if you are doing a lot of ocean sailing no engine or electric would be fine
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
There are but it’s rare, but it’s very true that you can’t cross oceans in a sailboat purely under engine (if so why own a sailboat) but what you often want or need to do is use the engine to get though areas with little wind when on passage. So coming back across the Atlantic last year I would run my engine slow ahead to get me through areas of no wind so that I could pick the breeze on the next weather system. Sure I could have bobbed around going nowhere for days but the ability not push though makes a huge difference to passage times and while we all enjoy sailing we also want to get there.

@@pauls064 I have had the boat with me for a year, started on it in sept 22 BUT I had at least 4 months off it working on other projects last winter and I have also fitted in other smaller jobs outside of it. My best guess is 7 months so far. The project has moved on quite a bit since this video and not everything done is done on camera, quite a bit just gets done in the background.

Renewable energy is the new gold rush for the rich and elite investers. And if they really want to affect climate change then they would invest in Reforestation and desertification. But there is no profit in that.
@boatMatthias
@boatMatthias 7 ай бұрын
Anyone can invest into renewable energy, not just elite - super rich people. Reforestation does not get you places and indeed exactly for that reason airlines want you to omit your carbon footprint and these companies plant trees. However, some of them just buy a forest and promise protection, which in my opinion is disappointing.
