Contra: Shattered Soldier (PS2) - S-Rank No Death Run

This game blew me away - I was a little disappointed by the PS1 titles, but when this came out in November 2002, I figured I'd give it a chance with a rental and it immediately sucked me in - the music, the fast-paced action and the familiar side scrolling aspect really brought me back to my love for Contra III and the original games. I was obsessed with playing it over and over back then and anyone who knew me at the time usually saw it at least once. Still remains one of my all-time favorite games for the PS2. I used to have the strategy guide as well! There was one time when I played it with my brother-in-law, who brought over his gameshark and we played with invincibility so we could get through the game perfectly and unlock the secret video. My memory card got wiped out one day, so I had to get a perfect S-rank myself one day which was tough, but finally managed it sometime in the mid-late 2000's. Awesome run by the way!

Very well done. The removal of powerups and weapon switching reminds me of Axelay except you don't lose them on death, the charged shot seemed to be adapted for the next title, Neo Contra, and then on Artur Games' Super Cyborg. In case Konami would make another legacy compilation for Switch and PS4, it would be this, Neo and Contra 4. Though one can dream if it would happen in the future.

I plan on doing neo contra next, so far I'm enjoying it. Contra 4 looks good too but I haven't played it yet.

I think my favorite thing about this is how a jet-powered hover bike makes reciprocating engine noises and squeals its tires. Man I’m kicking myself for never picking this up on PS2. And I picked up a lot of Konami stuff - Air Force Delta Strike, Ring of Red, Zone of the Enders, Gradius III and IV, and of course Gradius V. Oh well.

Shattered Soldier needs more attention! It's my favorite Contra and it was blast fun S-ranking it. I wish there are more run and gun segments, as it could have been more fun given the very useful gunpoint lock feature. I wish you could adjust SFX/BGM as the SFX is kinda too loud, you almost can't hear "Survival of the Fittest" because of this. I agree the story was all over the place lol but it's going to be different feel if you replay earlier Contras (Hard Corps especially) after knowing SS's whole plot.

I remember I was on a mission back in 2012. I wanted to see what would happen if I finished with an A rank. Then after all the years that had passed, I had no idea about the extra levels. Had to use my 30 lives cheat code to finish it.

I thought neo contra was awesome personally. I was hesitant at first because of the 3d perspective, but ended up really liking it

speaking of what TV/monitor did you use? did you use things like framemeister? video looks clean and slick here

Yes. I used a framemeister to deinterlace and upscale the video. It's then captured with el gato hd capture and finally upscaled to 1080p in post processing. I play it on a Sony trinitron crt.

You need to get a better ranking in the first 4 stages. I think you need at least b to see stage 5 and rank A to see 6 and 7

I owned this game way back in 2002 when it was new and played it a ton, eventually getting s-rank back in the day. Wanted a run recorded which is why I revisited it nearly 20 years later

Bought this years ago, sadly my last 2 PS2's I have owned don't like the music on the disc, it skips. Really don't feel like buying another copy, the game plays fine, but thast pulse pounding music must be there to get the adrenaline rushing. The intro to this game causes balls to drop, and women to grow facial hair, it has that much testosterone in it. This was the return to form Contra needed after two abysmal outsourced games on the PS1 (also Saturn for Legacy of War). Fuck you Appaloosa Software. The Sparkster ending also still gets me, everything done by the mouths of the developers haha!
