@@MattsHobbyHour Does it work best going from light > dark or does it work for highlights just as well?
@MattsHobbyHourАй бұрын
@@Taphosthewarlock you can use that blending technique with opaque paints for highlights as well, it's a variation of a technique often called feathering. If you're working with Contrast paint, I think it's best to start with the lightest color first, and work your way darker, rather than the other way around. Good luck!

I love that you put the paint names on the screen, thank you! Would you do a brush care video at some point? I keep destroying brushes :(
@MattsHobbyHourАй бұрын
Thanks! I'm glad the paint names help! Honestly I don't do anything fancy for my brushes. I'll repost this comment I left on a different video: I use Rosemary and Co 99's for everything. Some paints are harder on the brushes than others. In my experience, the 99's are such an affordable price that I don't worry too much about it. I don't use brush soap; just water. I get the most life out of my brushes by assigning/promoting them to new roles: The newest brushes get used for the most important detail work. Once the point starts to go, they get "promoted" to edge highlights. Then they get promoted to basecoats/contrast. After that, they get promoted to drybrushing, and then finally glue/basing. I try to use the oldest/worst condition brush possible for each job, and by doing that it also extends the life of all my other brushes. Hope this info helps. Good luck!

Typically I blow on the areas with air bubbles and they pop. You just have to ensure you don’t blow hard enough to spray wet paint on other areas of the model but it seems to work the best. Also it’s agitation that creates the bubbles so slower brush strokes help with not making them to begin with

Hey Man, I’d like to know how many and which contrast paints are the “essential” I mainly paint fantasy figures, lizards, dragons , orcs, wizards etc. I have mostly Vallejo opaque paints and I’m looking to get into contrast paints not to replace my current paint lineup but to compliment it, looking at contrasts as a tool. Not an end all be all paint range for getting quick and somewhat ‘mediocre’ results but as an enhancing tool for a good level painting. Your videos are great man, thanks!
@MattsHobbyHour2 сағат бұрын
Thanks for watching, and that's a great question! I think it would be a great subject for a video. There is a lot to consider. Do you only paint one army, or do you paint a variety of models? The selection of Contrast paints I use in my videos are all good, and I'd recommend collecting them all eventually. Honestly I think the best bet would be to make a list of the colors you like that appear in the videos, and pick up a couple at a time. If you're looking for a short list of colors to get started, I would recommend Darkoath Flesh, Skeleton Horde, Gryph Charger Grey, Magos Purple. Those are more transparent and can serve as basecoats, or you can use them as shades/glazes over regular paint. I think you would get the most use out of those colors. I would then look into expanding the collection with some more opaque colors, like Black Templar, Wyldwood, Flesh Tearers Red, Imperial Fist, Aeldari Emerald, and Sigvald Burgundy. I would also recommend Martian Orange and Orc Skin from the Vallejo Xpress Color range. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy painting!

Hi Matt, love your content -- I find myself tuning in on a regular basis. I have noticed that you use watered down acrylic blacks to punch up borders between details before moving onto the highlight stage. I have been wondering: did you ever consider switching to oil paints for that purpose?
@MattsHobbyHour2 ай бұрын
thanks for watching! I find that oil paint is much less precise than acrylic. Because of mineral spirits' high capillary action, oil paint flows too much and doesn't stay where I paint it. Not to mention a longer drying time. Acrylic is more precise and better for this style of painting. That being said, I do use oil washes now and then, usually the end stages of a model, and it gives a different looking result. I think oil is better when you're going for a "grimdark" style, rather than a clean and bright style.
