Mastering my emotions has become my number one goal. I have anger issues and definitely respond too much with emotion. What I struggle with while watching this is when its appropriate to step back, pause and consider something said or done was not intentional or would have such an impact, to understanding the words or action were intentional and demand an immediate response. Interactions with people can be such a mind game, how you react can say more than how you don't react, whether that be a pause or a reaction. quick banter and wit to defuse the situation or even put you on top of the situation eludes me and adds to my anger and emotional response. It takes me too long to respond in these situations which makes the outcome even worse. The best I can do is remain silent while I'm ready to choke the person out on the inside. The idea of controlling my emotions is a daunting task and pushes me to be recluse and isolated...easier said than done....but working at it....

@earl81ful Thank you for your openness and vulnerability in sharing your personal challenges, Earl. 🙏 Emotions, especially intense ones like anger, can be incredibly overwhelming, and it's commendable that you're striving for mastery over them. Stoicism teaches us that it's not the events themselves, but our judgments about them, that cause our feelings. But understanding that conceptually and applying it in the heat of the moment are two different things. Have you tried any specific Stoic exercises or meditations to help you during those moments when emotions surge? Remember, every step you take towards self-improvement, no matter how small, is progress. Keep pushing forward, and know that this community is here for support! 💪✨

Although im not fixed im better than ive ever been but im still not there so dont expect them to fix you 3) keep learning about yourself and putting it into practise only by doing the latter will you get to where you seek 4) you wont change overnight. Accept that. Dont punish yourself for every setback Best of luck i hope you make the changes you seek. Much love

Well... in terms of lessons that resonated the most: number 2, to reflect before reacting, and number 4, to ask whether it'll matter in 5 years. Both for different reasons, though. Reflecting is what I'm struggling with at the moment. Didn't use to, though. In my college years, I had fine control over my mental state and practised visualisations on a near-daily basis, slow breaths and everything. But then something happened and it appears to have eroded my resistance. I started getting emotional over movies that didn't bother me before, getting short of breath despite not changing anything about my exercise or diet... I suspect it was due to a shock in relation to my sleeping schedule along with sugar and caffeine intake (one outside of my control, long story), but it messed up my ability to visualise and meditate, and I've not managed to get quite back to my old level. As a result, some comments just set my heart rate off, or topics get me blurting out things I shouldn't. Been like that for ten-odd years now. Number 2 is what I need to work on for the future. I'm a practising chaoist, so some of these resonated a little differently than most. Chaotism advocates for journalling, too, and studying yourself, and I quote 'like a predator studies its prey.' Still not sure what to do about this issue, but I'm trying different options at the moment. Hopefully one will take. Number 4, though, is what is evident from the past. Five years ago I was struggling hard, just out of college and not getting any job prospects, no help from government agencies who took two years to realise that yes, I actually was entitled to a little help. Took a temp job that absolutely wrecked me for three weeks, took a course that took a year, took a gamble with one of the agencies who were interested, and now I have a job that has nothing to do with what I spent eight years in college for. And yet, as much as the job can get on my nerves sometimes, I realised shortly after getting it that it's my dream job. We had to get some analyses done personality-wise and it genuinely put some things into perspective, some useful lessons came out of that. Now I do work that aligns with my basic character traits, I'm not going against my nature, I'm using some of my negative traits constructively. And I'm good at it, I get positive feedback on a regular basis. If you'd told me five years ago that I'd be doing the work I'm doing now, and that I'd be appreciated for it, I'd have told you you're nuts. People believed in me, and my rational self couldn't believe why. But I'm now four years into this job, and I'm one of the success stories of my department. I say that not to brag, but to illustrate: there are some crazy things that can happen in five years. You can go from hopeless to top of your game and building a career and becoming proficient in a field you don't even realise exists in five years. I guess the lesson on control is something I took to heart since then, too, but in a different sense: you can't control the outcome of the die roll, but you do have control over how often you can roll the dice. You can't control whether you'll luck out, but you do control when you stop pursuing an avenue, or accept another one.

Wow, @RaichuWizDom, thank you for sharing such a heartfelt and detailed reflection on your journey. 🙏 It sounds like you've had quite the transformative experiences over the years. Your insight into both the importance of reflection and the unpredictable nature of life's outcomes are invaluable. It's impressive how you've managed to find a role that aligns with your core traits, even when it wasn't what you initially expected or studied for. That's a testament to adaptability and resilience. And as for the struggles with reflection and control, it's an ongoing journey, and it seems like you have a deep awareness of where you've been and where you want to go. Given your background in Chaotism and its emphasis on self-study, do you think there are specific Stoic practices or lessons that could be beneficially integrated into your current approach to personal growth and introspection? 🤔

@@stoicbond You're very welcome. I sincerely hope you keep on putting out material that is of the same standard! The most valuable lesson I have taken so far has been the act of journaling. It is perhaps the most overlooked of all the aspects of stoicism. People look to the act of writing down their own thoughts and feel that it somehow shows a sign of weakness or vulnerability. Being a straight white male myself the same is true of the notion of therapy or counselling amongst my friends and colleagues. In the same way that nearly everyone can benefit from therapy, I also believe everyone can also benefit from writing a journal. It is a safe space in which to air your thoughts, reflections and anxieties. The act of putting them to paper or typing it up onto a screen allows you to examine your thoughts and how you feel about them in a detached manner. It promotes a much deeper understanding of what it is that your true genuine self wants, and through that understanding strong affirmative actions can be taken. I can honestly say that I am a happier, healthier, stronger man by keeping a daily journal.
@stoicbond Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing such a personal and insightful perspective. It's profound to see how the simple act of journaling can have a transformative effect on one's life. The misconceptions surrounding journaling, therapy, and other forms of self-reflection and self-expression can indeed be stifling, especially when societal pressures or stereotypes deem them as signs of weakness. It's heartening to see individuals like you challenging these norms and recognizing the true value in these practices. Your observation about journaling as a 'safe space' is particularly resonant. By documenting our thoughts, we grant ourselves an opportunity not just to reflect, but also to observe our patterns, growth, and areas of improvement. Over time, as you mentioned, this fosters deeper self-awareness and paves the way for positive change. Thank you for highlighting the significance of journaling within the context of Stoicism and more broadly in personal growth. Your testimony is a reminder of the power of introspection and the importance of cultivating it in our daily lives. Wishing you continued clarity and growth on your journey. 📖✍🌱@@jackwilding4990

Hey @R93m, thanks for watching the video and sharing your experience with us! It's great to hear that you were able to apply stoic principles to stay emotionally controlled in tough times. 🙌 I can only imagine how challenging it must have been to go through Covid twice and live alone. 😔 It's completely normal to feel sensitive and experience periods of depression during such uncertain times. But remember, stoicism teaches us to focus on what we can control and let go of what we can't. 🧘♂️ I'm curious, what specific stoic lessons have helped you the most during these tough times? 🤔 Let's keep the conversation going and share our experiences with each other!

Going through two decades of worsening hardships and finally reaching a point where everything is quite stable and peaceful. Going through all that made me stoic without me even knowing what it is until recently. The thing I struggle with is emotion control towards a certain topic and I have a constant lingering anger and hatred in the back of my mind. I want to get rid of the emotion while keeping the knowledge. I already taught myself how to control anxiety and crippling stress, but the lingering hatred and anger are very tough to crack.

For Christmas I bought 3 books "The Stoic Path" by Rodolfo Costa, "Meditations Marcus Aurelius Classical Translation by George Long and Seneca-Letters from a Stoic. I am just starting to read them. They go into much more detail from these great videos. Dealing with emotions is hard for me. I grew up not being allowed to express anything so now I just keep things bottled up until it hurts or they come out. I'm learning to stop myself from overacting taking a deep breath think for a moment then respond. I've been practicing daily mindfulness meditation for over 10 years now. It really does make a difference

I’m always grateful every day and maintain a positive outlook on life, to adapt rather than react. However, lately, I’ve met someone who has really affected my heart. He’s a true stoic, always calm and almost nonchalant about everything, and I find myself deeply attracted to him. I’ve grown so attached that I don’t want to let him go. If he leaves me, I understand it’s out of my control, but It will be really sad.

I can speak to the efficacy of reflecting on events that might not have an effect in 5 years time. My mother passed away over 5 years ago, and the event was devastating for me. I failed out of law school (and since recently graduated), my family life was rocky due to outside circumstances, but I persevered. My wife and I now have a new challenge (raising my brother-in-law’s kids while he is in rehab) and we continue to persevere through challenges together

The concept of practicing dispassion might seem counterintuitive at first, but the way it's explained in the video makes perfect sense. It's not about suppressing emotions but rather about finding balance and perspective in our responses to life's ups and downs.
