I have found that the most accurate definition of a DJ is: One who assembles any collection of pieces of previously recorded materials and turns them into a new piece or performance. By that definition it is. :)

you can get the midi fighters from djtechtools under the tabs, 'shop' -----> 'midifighter'. And ableton can be bought from guitar center, or from abletons main site.

The one question I have about using one or many Midi Fighters is while you have all the elements on it for piecing together one or two crazy tracks, how do you go about switching up all the sounds live so that you could play another set of songs or an entire set? I can see how this might be done with serato in that you would just change the songs you're taking cue points from, but with ableton I can only imagine you would have multiple drum racks and you'd arm them as you need them?

I apologize if this question is confusing at all, but I feel like I'm missing something very basic/commonly used within ableton. Most of my music is not loop based, so I duplicate clips as many times as I need them to play for each song. I've got a MIDI keyboard with 16 pads and knobs that I usually just use for recording parts/automations, but I'd like to start utilizing it in live sets. Many producers I see performing have these elaborate controllers that have sections with sequencers indicated by different colors, and their songs involve triggering clips, playing whole parts, and cueing the next section of a song. How do you arrange your songs within ableton, and how can you map midi for a whole setlist? I'm not sure how I'd even go about changing sounds in the middle of a set. I am having trouble moving beyond just playing parts and recording automations in a straight forward fashion, and being a guitarist, it would be cool to be able to improvise/loop something and jam until I want to move on.

In the bottom left when you select a clip, there is a Loop button. When it is selected it turns green, and the clip will look. Google "Ableton Clip Looping"

The only thing I still like and think can't be replaced by a "button" is scratching (you need perpetual rotation, otherwise it just doesn't feel like it has any feedback, a dead jog wheel isn't good for that any more than a D-Pad is good for playing a 3D game), however all the 'button mashing' as far as these Midi Fighter things go is awesome. What's the diff between this and ticking on/off some lights in FL Studio or Rebirth? I mean, besides the fact you can improve on the fly...

And I meant to say "improv" - because you're not sitting there only looking at a screen as the little play ticker goes by and trying to create a beat by ticking off and on some lights in software, you're playing those drum beats and samples physically, in any speed and any style you feel like. I'd say that's opens things up to being a lot more free and expressive.

Love the website, the channel and the videos, but this should have just been called "controllerism jamming". You guys showed how you can jam with someone using 2 controllers. Even though you could possibly compare this to a turntablism jam session, this video should not be called "how to DJ". One love & keep putting out great vidz!
