I only recently realised (in 2019) that the Netherlands is similar. The Kingdom of the Netherlands has constituent countries: Aruba, Curacao, Sint-Maarten and the mainland Netherlands. More bonkers: Sint-Maarten isn't in the EU but shares a totally unprotected land border with Saint Martin (French) which IS in the EU, I drove across it several times and was flabbergasted. PS: I was from Bedfordshire too, I lived in Leighton Buzzard until I was about 20. Leighton Buzzard of course never feeling truly Bedfordshirean as it got pushed out of Buckinghamshire in the 60s (?). Bedford is the better town out of Bedford and Luton btw.

Fun thing. Our overseas territories are so complicated that we just don't bother trying to teach it anymore. It's mostly: "yeah, place so and so are related to us, kinda difficult, don't bother with it too much because in reality we do not have very close ties anymore"

I'm still mad about the fact that I was in a trivia competition where we had to name as many countries as we could that had land borders with France, and they refused to accept Netherlands even though I have BEEN to Sint Maarten before and crossed the border twice.

The subdivisions of Germany are usually called "states" in English to make things easier, but they're actually officially called "Länder" in German which literally means "countries". Though it's also common to call them "Bundesländer", i.e. "federal countries", to make things less ambiguous.

Whereas Bavaria is an ancient kingdom whose history goes back to about 800AD which people from there regard as their own. The only other current states with a comparatively long history as independent territories are Saxony (without Lower) and the Hanseatic cities Hamburg and Bremen. The rest were created at various points during the 20th century, the bulk actually by the Allies after 1945. If you look at a map of the German states from before 1933, it looks vastly different from the current one, whereas it'll be almost identical, except for some minor changes, to a map from 1815.

sporting team rivalries seem to be a great way to get people from nearby locations to really dislike each other especially if there are socioeconomic differences. Middle class vs lower class combined with football you're asking for trouble. Away from the location a sporting rivalry can then be a point of connection for people they can agree to disagree on local team but at least its not team from far away. The American redefinition of state seems to have lead to Australian states. Before federation the Australian colonies were not independent states but after federation they were called states probably because they became a similar political division as US states.

You almost hit the nail on the head talking about the black population in the US. There's a reason why African-American is important, and different than person of colour, or black American. African American refers to someone who is of African descent, but not sure of what descent specifically, because of slavery. There is a ton of issues when you start to group descendants of slaves with the very wealthy, well educated immigrants say Nigeria or Kenya.

A lot of that is hazy, though, because of the election and self-identification of Barack Obama (son of a Kenyan student and white American) as "African American" despite no slave heritage. People, on both sides, argued against the epithet, but it quickly became a minority opinion and also something picked up by racists to the point that "African American" might mean something more these days.

Yes but if a recent immigrant is from as you say Nigeria or Kenya and they have American citizenship they are just as African American as Anglofied African Americans descended from the slave days as at the end of the day they are both descended from sub saharan Africans. The more controversial one in the U.S imo is not recognizing white Americans as European Americans as they are descended from Europeans either long ago or more recently. Why on earth are black Americans known as African American yet white Americans aren't known as European American? They are both immigrant groups just as one another.

Another thing about the terminology used - notice how you call yourself "British" even though Britain refers to that entire island (which includes Welsh & Scottish people), while others will refer to themselves as Scottish, Welsh or even English? How many people are claiming you should call yourself United Kingdomites or United Kingdomish? None. When someone claims they're British, we don't get mad, nor do we make them say they're "English" or "United Kingdomish." Yet for the US, we now want to call them United Statesian? Sorry, but that's just dumb. No point in getting upset either, as we know damn well no Brazilian is going overseas & then calling themselves "American"... no, they'll say they're "Brazilian" and be proud of it.

7:36 As a Catalan, let me explain. Catalonia does exist but it's not a sovereign state. What is Catalonia? - Officially, an "autonomous community" of Spain (concept made up in 1978) - A "country", informally speeking, according to many Catalans - A "nation", idem, and according to the Catalan parliment, but disagreed by the Constitutional Court - A "nationality" (whatever it means) according to the Spanish Constitution. No one knows what it means, it's just a compromise made up when the Constitution was written (1978). So, as you can see, in Spain there is also the debate of what is a country. And it's not just Catalonia - other regions have the same issue, such as: - The "Valencian Country" or "Valencian Community" - The "Basque Country" or "Basque Autonomous Community"

Two points - firstly you should check out Transylvania and Romania in more depth. Transylvania used to be Hungarian but was annexed to Romania by the treaty of Tianon. Large amounts of the rural population is still segregated by ethnicity (there are Romanian and Hungarian villages - and then there's the Roma). Hungary and Romania have nearly gone to war over on several occasions (and in fact did in 1919) and it was only kept repressed by the Warsaw Pact. It's quite easy to buy (modern) maps in Budapest of Greater Romania that include Transylvania. Secondly only the English get confused by the England/UK thing. In Scotland it's quite clear we're Scottish - there's just an occupying power here too.
@FOLIPE
@FOLIPE 3 жыл бұрын
No, you see, occupying is what the British did in Iceland during WW2. What you guys have in the UK is just different regions being unequally represented in the national level due to huge disparity in population, but the union was not forced upon Scotland from day one, and they always had representation. Scotts can decide they want to leave the UK, but that doesn't mean one can rewrite history to suit that narrative.

The one thing I want to understand: why do those 4 "countries" have separate teams in the FIFA worldcup??
@nathanaelsadgrove
@nathanaelsadgrove 3 жыл бұрын
FIFA doesn't decided who is a country or not. The world cup is competed by FIFA's member football association. Usually football associations represent a country but not always.
@Psyk60
@Psyk60 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanaelsadgrove FIFA does actually have rules about what they count as a country, and according to the definition they use they aren't countries. But you're right that football associations don't always represent a country (in the sense of a sovereign state). They have a special rule for the UK that allows the four "British Associations" to be members in their own right, despite not fitting their definition of a country. There are other exceptions too, but this particular rule applies to the UK only. The reason for this is that association football started in the UK, so the UK countries have always had separate teams.

I'm Canadian, so I'm not 100% sure the USA works the same, but our driver's licenses are also issued by the individual province or territory BUT if you move and you prove your new address, your new province or territory just re-issues your license at the same level. You don't have to re-earn it. I got my learner's permit when I lived in British Columbia and I did not have to re-sit the knowledge test to get a learner's permit in Newfoundland. I just had to pay a renewal fee to get a Newfoundland ID card that said I was a learner. Now that I have a full Newfoundland driver's license, if I were to move I would just "renew" it in the new province to get a local license card with my new address on it. As long as I live in Canada I do not have to be re-evaluated for driving now unless I lose my license for medical reasons and want to re-gain it, or want to continue driving after I turn 80 (at which point I believe it's every 2 years.)

The whole issue around calling someone a native is easily resolved if you borrow the distinction we use in Canada in order to identify those with Aboriginal ancestry and those with European ancestry. So, we call a white Canadian who was born here a native-born Canadian. Conversely, we call what used to be referred to as "Indians", just Natives.
@saiaoisan

However, the term 'head of state' is usually used to describe presidents of countries (the country being also reffered to as 'state').But a US governor is not the same thing as the US president, although they are both technically 'heads of state'.
