I only recently realised (in 2019) that the Netherlands is similar. The Kingdom of the Netherlands has constituent countries: Aruba, Curacao, Sint-Maarten and the mainland Netherlands. More bonkers: Sint-Maarten isn't in the EU but shares a totally unprotected land border with Saint Martin (French) which IS in the EU, I drove across it several times and was flabbergasted. PS: I was from Bedfordshire too, I lived in Leighton Buzzard until I was about 20. Leighton Buzzard of course never feeling truly Bedfordshirean as it got pushed out of Buckinghamshire in the 60s (?). Bedford is the better town out of Bedford and Luton btw.

Away from the location a sporting rivalry can then be a point of connection for people they can agree to disagree on local team but at least its not team from far away. Before federation the Australian colonies were not independent states but after federation they were called states probably because they became a similar political division as US states.

You almost hit the nail on the head talking about the black population in the US. There's a reason why African-American is important, and different than person of colour, or black American. African American refers to someone who is of African descent, but not sure of what descent specifically, because of slavery. There is a ton of issues when you start to group descendants of slaves with the very wealthy, well educated immigrants say Nigeria or Kenya.

A lot of that is hazy, though, because of the election and self-identification of Barack Obama (son of a Kenyan student and white American) as "African American" despite no slave heritage. Yes but if a recent immigrant is from as you say Nigeria or Kenya and they have American citizenship they are just as African American as Anglofied African Americans descended from the slave days as at the end of the day they are both descended from sub saharan Africans. The more controversial one in the U.S imo is not recognizing white Americans as European Americans as they are descended from Europeans either long ago or more recently. Two points - firstly you should check out Transylvania and Romania in more depth. Transylvania used to be Hungarian but was annexed to Romania by the treaty of Tianon. Large amounts of the rural population is still segregated by ethnicity (there are Romanian and Hungarian villages - and then there's the Roma). Hungary and Romania have nearly gone to war over on several occasions (and in fact did in 1919) and it was only kept repressed by the Warsaw Pact. It's quite easy to buy (modern) maps in Budapest of Greater Romania that include Transylvania. Secondly only the English get confused by the England/UK thing. In Scotland it's quite clear we're Scottish - there's just an occupying power here too.
@FOLIPE3 жыл бұрын
No, you see, occupying is what the British did in Iceland during WW2. @@nathanaelsadgrove FIFA does actually have rules about what they count as a country, and according to the definition they use they aren't countries. They have a special rule for the UK that allows the four "British Associations" to be members in their own right, despite not fitting their definition of a country. I'm Canadian, so I'm not 100% sure the USA works the same, but our driver's licenses are also issued by the individual province or territory BUT if you move and you prove your new address, your new province or territory just re-issues your license at the same level. You don't have to re-earn it. I got my learner's permit when I lived in British Columbia and I did not have to re-sit the knowledge test to get a learner's permit in Newfoundland. I just had to pay a renewal fee to get a Newfoundland ID card that said I was a learner. Now that I have a full Newfoundland driver's license, if I were to move I would just "renew" it in the new province to get a local license card with my new address on it. As long as I live in Canada I do not have to be re-evaluated for driving now unless I lose my license for medical reasons and want to re-gain it, or want to continue driving after I turn 80 (at which point I believe it's every 2 years.)

Kingdoms, Principalities, Empires, Emirates, states, provinces, lander, duchies, viceroyalties, counties, ridings, viscounties, shires, etc. A lot of these are named after historical royal or noble titles of the executive of the area.

The whole issue around calling someone a native is easily resolved if you borrow the distinction we use in Canada in order to identify those with Aboriginal ancestry and those with European ancestry. So, we call a white Canadian who was born here a native-born Canadian. Conversely, we call what used to be referred to as "Indians", just Natives.
@saiaoisan3 жыл бұрын
That's not a solution at all. The term native by definition means native-born, and obviously someone who is native-born is also native; the terms are interchangeable. You're just using different terms that mean the same thing to describe different people.
@terryomalley19743 жыл бұрын
@@saiaoisan I'm simply informing people of the terms used in Canada to distinguish between Indigenous people and Canadian-born people of European ancestry. If you have an issue with it, take it up with the federal government.

@@terryomalley1974 Why would I want to go to the Canadian government when I'm not even Canadian myself? I am merely saying that your claim that the Canadian identification system "resolves" the Native naming issue is nonsensical because there is no difference in meaning between the "distinguishing" terms.
@senbeiboi45113 жыл бұрын
@@terryomalley1974 I find it interesting how in the US and Canada people stopped using the term "indian" in favour of native american while here in Brazil not only do white and black people refer to them as "índio" but the natives themselves use the term, which gets a little confusing because the term for someone from India is "indiano"

Because in middle school, we were told that the UK is the combined name of Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England, and they each have their own seperate capitals... But then when I entered highschool, the teacher asked something along the lines of "what is the capital of the UK?" and while I knew the answer, It still confused me, because for me it was like asking "what is the capital of Europe?" or "what is the capital of Asia?" just didnt make sense to me

I also love the fact that when you look up what a US state governor is it will show you that it is a 'head of state' (the state's main person = head). However, the term 'head of state' is usually used to describe presidents of countries (the country being also reffered to as 'state').But a US governor is not the same thing as the US president, although they are both technically 'heads of state'. So that's also pretty cool that you can define these two in a different way. As always - great video toycat!
