Yet in the mean time, many of the town's elite managed to hide Jewish children from the soldats. France did have one of the largest resistance movements during WW2, I believe only Poland and Yougoslavia exceeded it (and for good reasons, the Germans were far more brutal on the east and were more moderate with western/northern conquered territories, in the name of their racial theories). People just bash the french resistance movement mindlessly nowadays, it's just a trend nothing factual. Though I'd admit its role was a bit exagerated decades ago.

Drew, we had telephone operators *way* after the end of those crank phones. I was taught as a child to dial “O” for operator in an emergency-no 9-1-1 then, but you could reliably reach an operator. Later on, in college, everyone called home by dialing the operator on a pay phone and saying “Collect Call, please.” The operator would then dial the number you gave her and ask if they would accept the call. Or, no one would pick up and the operator would relay that information to you. When I called my grandmother collect, I would explain to the operator that she was “elderly” and ask that they give her more time to get to the phone.

I think that the main difference is that the French resistance operated both in and outside of the country, had a professional army, helped other countries in their operations, managed to help the allies to open beachheads in Europe, and also liberated and kept our country free after the war. Compared to other countries where... oh well... Not saying the other resistance movements were insignificant, but we know how it ended. And it's not the same story.
@jozefkozon4520
@jozefkozon4520 Жыл бұрын
Interesting that you talk about the results in the context of the resistance movement of the Colonial Empire and the hegemon of the Treaty of Versailles, which retained a significant portion of its own territory, military, treasury and government outside the zone of occupation. All the more so because none of the other resistance groups were in an equally privileged position. Even more so taking into account the directions of movement of the front and which side of the Elbe River Paris is located on. Especially since the areas on the eastern bank were donated to an oppressive regime that actively murdered any similar ventures as its troops advanced. For example, the Alliance was racing to save Paris from the smallest scratch. In turn, the Soviets not only had a viewing party while Warsaw was burning, they patiently waited for the Germans to murder everyone, plunder whatever they found and slowly and methodically demolish all the buildings on the western bank of the Vistula. Everyone likes to brag about their performance in a game rigged to their advantage. You won't find any meat or fat under all those feathers. With all these benefits, the French Resistance is mediocre at worst and barely better at best. And that's not the end. Well, maybe for France, because they didn't have to continue fighting after '44. At least, not as an underfunded resistance movement actively pursued by the political police. Some continued the fight until the 1960s. Compare with that.
