Fancy specialty calculators may not be around on the job site, learn to convert in writing using a basic calculator.
To multiply 7`- 5 1/4" x 2` - 3 3/8", conversion to decimal feet is necessary.
By the end you will get why 7.1875 feet = 7`- 5 1/4"
Prerequisites: Must be proficient in reading a tape measure in inches and metric, + and - fractions, +, - and x decimals. Also learn to read an engineers` tape.
Steps:
1 Subtract feet, write feet into final answer.
2 Multiply left over decimal digits by 12.
3 Write whole number from result into final answer as inches.
4 Subtract whole number, multiply decimal left over digits by either 2, 4, 8, or 16 (or 32, 64, 128).
5 Write this multiplier number (2, 4, 8, ...) as the denominator in the fractions of an inch. 6 Round result up to nearest whole number (typically by 0.11111 ...) This new whole number is the numerator in the fractions of an inch. Only minimal rounding is needed.

Thanks for the explanation. Really helped. Math involving feet and inches is painfully slow, please USA, convert to metric, there's a reason the entire world has.

+Aghast ... the manufactoring industry is dragging metrication out since the Mendenhall Order in 1893 but more recently since the Metric Conversion Act of 1975. Hawaii is converting effectively on January 1, 2018. Oregon is next, no date.

I thought you were supposed to round up if the number after the the decimal is 5 or higher? Sorry great presentation by the way.... I'm here for a refresher after using the transit at work and totally forgot how to convert decimal into feets and inches. Epic fail.... it's been years since I had to use an engineer scale. Doing only concrete form work all this time. This decimal problem is around 10 minutes in. "4.562496" I was an inch off. Thank you for taking your time out of your day to put this presentation together....

I’m using a micrometer and a calliper a lot when messing bolts, drill bits and nuts, as you probably know these measurement tools gives decimals.. my question is how do I convert my decimal measurements I get to say 5/8’s of an inch.. or 9/16’s of an inch.. ? I’m confused on how to convert them to fractional form.. if that makes any senses.. please reply...

So you just multiple the everything from the decimal to the right by 12 and that gives you the inches part

. 0.333 is 10 based ryte.. Should be multipllied by 10 rather than 12. Let's say if it's 7.3 means 7 feet. 3 denotes 3 inch from a feet devided by ten.. It's from enginnering tape ryte

The base changes, it is 12 for inches to feet, then 3 from feet to yards, then 2 from yards to a fathom, ... base can not be ignored, it's not 10

When multiplying you didn't say where 16 comes from
@apprenticemath
@apprenticemath 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, excellent point. I wanted 16, as the denominator, so I multiplied by 16. You can try 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 as well. You need to make a fraction that you can locate on the tape measure, so 0.8 = 4/5, but there are no 5ths on any tape measure, hence the above numbers must be made work, round up/down a bit as necessary. Or re-multiply with a finer denominator. You might get, say 3.5/16 as your final fraction, you know it is 7/32.

+Andromuda I totally do. I still don`t know what is meant by his 7`-2`4" is 2.1/4 as it actually reads 7feet - 2feet 4inches at line one, minute one, second one or how it equals 2.1-quarters. My request for clarity and accuracy does not exclude the inventive use of decimal-fraction combos. Thanks for asking, good one.
