Did you know that Steintrikes make modular recumbent trikes? This means that you can easily convert one model to another if you need some different parts! In this video, we show how we converted Endre's Wild One to Wild One Roadster, by changing the rear fork and adding a bigger wheel (26" instead of 20").
We are converting Endre's Wild One because he wants a bigger wheel to achieve higher speeds, as he is taking up a challenge to finish a jubilar 100-year-anniversary 200 km brevet on 11th September 2021! Please support him on the day, and if all goes well, the next video comes from the ride :)

That was very interesting to see how easy it was to convert to the larger wheel. Cheers

Thank you! It was really quite easy, and as you can see, without any special tools required - you just need to know the basic bike parts and how to (diss)assemble them. I find it really cool how Steintrikes made the whole system modular, which allows such adjustments when we need them.

Always best to see first timers experience a new mechanical challenge to understand how simple or hard it is, and what specialty tools you might be missing. Did you not have to elongate (and therefore change out) the rear derailleur shift cable? Cutting cables smoothly enough to reuse can be a challenge if you don't have specialty cable cutters. I'm interested to see if you find it faster not just because of gear-inches but also because of the alleged lower rolling resistance of a larger diameter wheel. The ability to retroactively resize that rear wheel is a super nice feature, @Steintrikes d.o.o.

Thank you! As you probably know already, we like to do many things ourselves, this way we also understand better how different parts are working and how we need to maintain them, etc. We actually had the tools that we needed but couldn't find them in the right moment 😂 We didn't have to elongate the rear derailleur cable, it was long enough, but the outer shield was not, so we added one extra part from another shield there. It would be better to get another shield that is the right length, but for the time being it is working. And you know, there's and engineering saying - if it's working, don't touch it! We did however need to readjust the derailleur a little bit. After the first tests, and the 200 km ride that Endre did with it, we can say that it is faster this way. We also thought that it is a very cool concept by the Steintrikes, that they make the trikes modular, so you can change what you want, even just to try how you like it better. Maybe it is not that easy and quick to switch frequently between the small/bigger wheel, but once in a while it is completely doable and it takes maybe one-two hours of work.

Best of luck on your event , I have a suggestion, for going faster , and that is to put a wheel cover on the rear wheel , I see you have drum brakes so disc on front probably not a great Idea but for me after I made a rear spike cover I was able to ride 2 gears higher with same effort, I was actually amazed at hom much it reduced effort. By the way , I like to do shout outs to other recumbent channels. Check out Bikes Trikes and Razors . Palm Victory The Motivated Rider . These are also quality trike channels that you might enjoy, Thanks for the nice videos. Yours truly Jason Nealey from Seattle Washington USA 🇺🇸

Thank you so much for the comment, and for the suggestion! We actually have drum brakes on all wheels. We will think about the cover, but so far even just changing the wheel proved as a good idea. Also, thank you for the shout-outs, I already follow Bikes, Trikes and Razors, as well as the Motivated Rider (although haven't seen him around lately). I will also check Palm Victory channel ;)

Thanks again for the nice video. Somewhere I lost count counting three screws :-) :-) :-) Because Endre's native language isn't english it is maybe easier to say derailleur as the french do. But I see you had great fun replacing the rear wheel, and that is what matters the most. Good team effort. So now you converted the Steintrike from a off-road monster to a speed machine. They realy are versatile!!! I wish Endre all the best on his 200km run. I hope its all downhill. Can we get footage of his run somewhere in the future? Because the overall dimentions of the trike are changed now, does it still fit on the roofrack of the car? Have a nice weekend and see you in the next video.

Thank you for the comment! You see, we have a special counting system in Serbia 😂 I think the French pronounciation would just confuse people, hahaha. And for the 200 km run - it was this Saturday, and for now I can just say that it went well! The next video will be about it! The route was actually quite flat, more or less, so it's not downhill all the way, but not uphill either. And about the roof rack, yes there were problems 😂 The place for the wheel is fixed on our carrier, and now the trike is a bit longer with the longer fork and doesn't fit. But we had plan B - we used a regular bike rooftop carrier for the rear wheel. Luckily for this occasion, we only took one trike so it was not a big problem, but if we wanted to take both, we would need to make some adjustments.

Thanks! In fact the new one we got for the added part of the chain is similar to what you suggest, I guess, because it is very easy to assemble/disassemble without tools.

Good luck on the ride. You can get a 26" wheel with the Sturmey Archer Hub brake. Derailleur is pronounced (Dee-Ray-Lee-Ur). HTH P.S. Your English is Very Good But 'Derailleur' is a French word and the French language is Hard to pronounce.

Try "Di-ray-yer" for French - di as in "did", ray as in beam of light, yer as in the last syllable of "hillier" (more hilly) but with a hint of "y" as in "you" instead of "i" just before the "er". The French "ll" is pronounced as a "y" in English. Or go United states and call it a derailer - a thing which pulls you off a rail. Anyway I counted the screws - I made it two holding on the rear fork, and two holding on the rack but one of those was doing both jobs so just three in all. So it's just two screws to hold the fork on English is a weird language for talking about fastenings - there are screws and bolts, A screw is a thing with a sharp pointy end that you screw into wood and it often has a countersunk head. A bolt is the same thickness all along so the end is flat. It usually attaches through metal and you put a nut on the end to hold them together but some bolts go into threaded holes in a metal frame instead of into nuts. Normally a bolt has a hex head or an allen key (hex key needed) head, but you can get some with cross heads or slot heads, just like screws. Then you can get bolts - same thickness all along - with countersunk heads and these tend to be called "machine screws" just to make it more confusing. These ones are used when the head has to be flush with the surface it attaches to; you often find them on tools like planes Now you must tell how the 200 km rides went. Best wishes for them

Thank you, we know that there are also 26" wheels with hub brakes, but we thought that it's not so important (I don't have a rear brake on my trike, the green one, and I don't have any problem because of that, I just use the front brakes - Ivana). And yes, we are aware that "derailleur" is a French word, but the French pronounce it completely differently 😂 Thank you for the explanation part-by-part, it does help! Sometimes you see a word written, and you know it and its meaning, but it is so hard to pronounce it. It's a similar thing with the word "miscellaneous".

Thank you Charli for the clarifications. I know a lot about different types of screws/bolts but not which term to use when 😂 - now it is clear! In Serbian we have one word for both, but we just add like "screw for wood" or "screw for metal" or "machine screw" or "screw for concrete" etc. So for us, it was not intuitive which would be a screw and which would be a bolt. 🤷‍♀️
