You should NEVER use that plastic spacer with a disk, its only to be used when no disk is installed (rim brakes) it is to prevent damage to the coating on the hub from the bolts, and to stop the bolts from going too deep in to the hub

13:41 great to see an mt60 connector being used for the phase wires. I would for sure advertise that as a feature over the standard connector block used on cheaper direct drive motor kits, which tends to not be great long term. plus you have a quick and easy quick disconnect.

however a criticism that I would make for Andy is to sell proper torque arms on his website, the ones he sells are not ideal. The company which made them has said so themselves. A v2 style torque arm would be much better.

Nice to see someone fitting the torque washers correctly on the inside, just file a little off the front side of the dropout then it'll fit in without a hammer 🔨 😉 ,it needs to come out easily at the side of the road incase you get a puncture .
@DudeStuff
@DudeStuff Жыл бұрын
Not sure what mean are you suggesting filling the dropout? I'd rather have it tighter and tap in with a plastic mallet. The tighter the fit the better. The mallet isn't needed for the dropout tightness anyway it's more likely the dropout width and spacers being tight filling wouldn't do anything to help that just loosen the axle fitment which isn't good! It's a gentle tap that doesnt damage anything to ensure its fully down as far as it can go. Steve
@ianmangham4570
@ianmangham4570 Жыл бұрын
@@DudeStuff Yes you file the front end of the drop out where the most metal is 17:03 where your left index finger is,,only a few points of a millimetre /0.2mm ,so it glides in smoothly.I been fitting these kits since 2013 and if used daily they pick up punctures because of the weight even with kevlar guard tyres. 🙏 so much easier to fix a puncture at the roadside with the wheel out, Ian 🤠🤟🇬🇧

Great info. I did a DIY conversation to an old junk bike and love it. I'm with you on the PAS and at first I disconnected it but later I wired a couple of micro switches so I can switch on the speed limiter and turn on the PAS and it's just right when I want to get more exercise and pedal at a comfortable speed of about 12mph, or I can turn off the limiter and the PAS for just tooling around town on it doing errands. Mine is a front wheel hub so a little nose heavy 🙄. Next time I'll use a back wheel hub with a cassette like you do 👍. 10ah batt gets me about 16-20 miles if I'm conservative so I have a 20ah coming in the mail to be the main battery, and an A/B switch so I can throw this current one on the back rack and have it as a secondary to run longer trips. Thanks for all your tips though man 😎👍

A generally good guide. I did a Yose Power 350w conversion on a Scott Sportster hybrid bike. That has an integrated controller in the battery mount which looks a lot cleaner. I’m guessing it’s not possible to do that with higher wattage conversions because the controller needs to be bigger to cope with the extra load? I did fit the triangular bag anyway. Excellent for a puncture repair kit, a few tools and a mini air compressor for roadside puncture fixes. I personally fitted the cadence sensor to get some exercise and extend the range. Probably less likely to attract attention from the plod if you’re pedalling a bit. I didn’t do the brake cut outs though for similar reasons and because my gear shift and brake levers are integrated. Thumb throttle is useful for getting away if you stop in too high a gear and ….15mph looks like warp speed😂
@DudeStuff
@DudeStuff Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's right you generally have smaller less powerful controllers built in to battery bases. Grinn make a reasonable one but they can be a bit off with tech support and warranty on my experience. Plus you can only use their over priced displays with it, their ugly as hell and too over spec'd I don't need to programme throttle curve on my handle bars for 300 quid

Are regular (separate) controllers better than those controllers that come integrated into the battery mount? Which is more reliable and future proof? Thanks.
@DudeStuff
@DudeStuff Жыл бұрын
Generally, separate ones are slightly higher amp output if we're talking average prices kits. Grinn do a higher power integrated controller but the plug connectors are huge and ugly and you get no display or the option of only using their own ugly overpriced display nothing basic and cheap. Possibly better cooling on extremal controller depending how you mount it.

Nice video Dude, although I will say why not leave the nut on the axle for protection against the mallet / floor, if the threads do become damaged you just unscrew the nut and it reforms the thread. I've been watching your uploads for over a year now after I was forcibly reintroduced to cycling after a break of over 27 years, I've converted an old Giant hybrid bike with a Bafang mid mount kit which I now use to commute 4 miles each way, covered about 2,500 miles in a little over 12 months. Hi, brilliant and very informative, the only thing that I would say from experience is that the bottle holder isn’t designed for taking the wait of a 3 or more kg battery. I personally think it’s better to drill thru the frame and bolt it. This is from experience of my first build, I’m on my third now and u have given me alot of tips, so thanks, so I hope maybe I’ve given you one too?. Those bottle holders just strip their own threads

Shame they can't spell "Manual" properly on their website, joking aside these are a good kit, bit pricey though, I managed the exact same set-up for no more than £670. All quality parts, and no it ain't a cheap battery that I bought, the battery cost the most (52v 20Ah - kit was a Voilamart, all stuff bought from e-bay). One point I think should be said, it makes sense to fit torque arms on both sides. That's what I've done anyway. Nice video, you do a good job of explaining the fitting process, for anybody doing this patience is a virtue as it's best to really take your time and do it right.

My question is (having had the kit on for a couple months) when adding the spacers onto the wheel and stretching the frame out to fit it in, is that not pulling the Caliper mount away from the hub by 10mm or so. Do you not need to space to disk further out due to this, haven’t been able to get a brake running without rubbing or schreaching due to not being aligned correctly.
@mikel4159
@mikel4159 9 ай бұрын
Looks fun as! I reckon a brake upgrade is certainly in order with something like that, at least put much bigger discs on it, like 203mm, more power and better heat dissipation.

There are several restrictive laws on ebike speed limits but surely a 2000W 20ah ebike kit can do a tone more than 15mph? 3. If I want to apply a front motor wheel hub and a rear motor wheel hub. Can I do that to a single battery and a single controller unit? 4. How much would that cost roughly because from memory, I recall you done that to one of mountain 29" black bike with a combined power of 5000w? I hope you can help me out with my questions and give me a little guidance. Thanks, buddy.

I think it depends on what you want to get. I'm going to play with a $100 ful sus 'department-store' bike conversion/restoration project. Hi Steve, seeking advice....i have a Carrera Hustle with 27.5 wheels, 21 speed, do you think this could be a good candidate for the Kirby 2000w conversion? I was thinking buy a 29er with maybe 10 gears but don't want unnecessary expense, and then again i don't want to waste time converting an unsuitable bike. What do you reckon? Cheers

So i got a weird question so i got a 29inch mountain bike with the 3x8 shifters and my derailers are trashed if i was to have this kit installed would i still need to have the derailers fixed or is there no way around that?

Well it's not going to fix your derailleur lol.. but if you use throttle only and it stays in 1 gear ok you probably don't need the gears much at all

In regards to the locking washer with notch. I measured my frame at 135mm however AFTER I received the kit I read elsewhere that the 2000W kit is 137mm. So I purchased based on 135mm confirmed. ( seen this 4 different places as well as the instructions). Tried 3 different bike frames and it is NEVER going in with these spacers inside the dropouts. (haven't even mounted a cassette yet) Can I use these locking spacers on the outside of the dropouts then tighten nut on them?

They will fit pretty much every hardtail and brand I've ever tried it's just a tighter fit than a normal wheel. What hardtail did you try?

@DudeStuff I have a Jamis Durango hardtail 8spd and a Jamis Dakar full suspension 10spd converted to 8spd. As well as the Giant Rainer hardtail 9spd. I have it in the Giant with the notched spacers on the outside. The disk is very close to the frame but it is in. I would need to fine tune the caliper mounting . But the Jamis full suspension is the one is was destined for. There is lots of room in the rear triangle (actually fit a 203mm disk in there with room to spare) but still tight in the drop outs. I think all the frames are aluminum so prying to much is asking for future stress cracks on our crappy roads/trials. Basically the notched washer is installed on the outside of the drop out and the notch will still engage the dropout, so as long as everything else will fit/line up it should be equal results in the end? No? The wheel is actually centered in the frame almost perfect but I think getting the derailleur and cogs setup will be the next fun time. Trying to locate my spare 8spd cassette and not having much luck. I am actually messing with this right now so thanks for the fast reply. @@DudeStuff
