Fantastically helpful and detailed vid! Thanks for this! I'm facing a "love it or leave it" decision on an 034 I got a couple of years back and this really shows how do-able this is. I think I'll fix it up. Clearly built in an era when things were simpler but still good quality. Very grateful that you shared this!

If you're fitting a 'After market' cylinder? Always check first the the cylinder bolts will go in before you put the piston on! I rebuilt a 038 for a man who wanted a after market cylinder fitted, I put the piston on..cylinder on...cylinder bolt holes were out! one bolt went in... The other ones were out of line, I had to take the piston back off and file the holes in the cylinder to get them to line up! I always, always check them now! And yes as the man says in the video? Cleanliness is everything!

I use an old wrist pin to make sure the circlip is properly seated - I insert it against the circlip and give it a couple of light taps with my smallest hammer, do it to both sides.

I put the boot on the cylinder after the cylinder is on. I hat to fight it and getting the cylinder bolts lined up in the gasket. After I get the bolts installed and turned down unto the flange, I rotate the crank around until the piston is at BDC and then tighten the cylinder down, incrementally, until it is hand tight with my T27 T wrench. After about 30 minutes, I rotate the piston to TDC and relighted. I use Dirko or 1184 on my gasket and cylinder flange, whichever one is handy at the time.

Great video . I’ve got an 034 AV a older one West Germany, the piston is scared so guess the jug is too . If I replace jug & piston should bottom parts be ok ? Or how can I check bottom ? These are great saws.

Did you do any type of port work on this after you got her running??

You seem familiar with these saws, I have a question about the small protective plate over the chain tensioner, bar screws and chain oil mechanism. I came across an old 034 from the early 90's and I notice there is no removable plate underneath the bar, which it seems to be on you model. Do you know if some generations were made without one, or if it's simply missing?

Great video, I bought a 036 pro. It looks like it has been run hard. It runs and I want to go thru it. My question is crank seals and bearings? Whats the history on the saw you did? Have you done them already.

I always throw any new cylinder and piston in my ultra sonic cleaner before installation, just with a little Dawn soap.

Plastic screws that strip. I clean out the hole with carb or break cleaner and then coat the hole, especially the old treads, with a thin light coat of JB Weld with a tooth pick. After it sets a bit, I coat the screw with grease and screw it into the repaired hole. After the JBWeld sets pretty good, I loosen the screw a bit and let it harden over night. The next day I tighten it down after removing it and rebolting it down with grease. After a week or so I will remove the screw, degrease it and the hole and reinstall it.

I use redline assembly lube to lubricat everything that need lubrication during assembly. I know about swear words. I am a Marine and learned most of them many years ago. Circlips give me hell, too.

I did this same thing with my saw. Did you leave the same carb on for the 034? I've ran about 4 tanks of gas through it and doesnt show any signs of running lean but was just curious on your thoughts. Great video!
@gxfricke6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used the same carb, but I did re-tune it for sure. I had to richen mine up quite a bit, but I also ported the muffler when I did this. Thanks for the comment!

What is the Exhaust stud spacing on ms340? anyone know? Totally for a side project unrelated to saws! But using Ms340 Jug in place of something else.

Do you have any idea what generation your 034 is. I recently bought a crankcase that is the same as your model and no one can seem to find me a clutch cover and brake cover as well. Any help would be appreciated. Love your videos.

I believe it's an older model, as I've also had trouble finding some parts, but I am really not sure. Thank You for watching! I hope to get back to making videos soon!

cheapo chineese knock off parts ARE NOT THE WAY to go to rebuild a Stihl saw.they don't last and they don't meet OEM specs for Stihl either...been there done that...wont happen again.
