Best old office PC are the Dell MT desktops. No need to swap cases. Just add your GPU and maybe (if needed) upgrade the PSU. Buy a 24 to 8 pin ATX adapter.

Id recommend Dell or Lenovo desktops, Lenovo especially the SFF ones has normal mATX motherboards as far as I know, and has less proprietary connectors.

yeah i agree i just recently bought a 3020MT dell optiplex and a Hp EliteDesk for fun... and i totally like the HP style better... but it sure is funky as all hell.... and the Dell is 100% better to work on... the dell you can do some custom stuff too like cut out the HDD slot holder and add a 140mm fan to the front this HP one though is funky for sure but i mean.... you cant beat a i7-6700 CPU 8gb ram and 1tb HDD for 150 bucks...

I've spotted some universal riser cages for video cards that had a cable connection from the x16 lane to make it face the cover horizontally instead of vertically as normal. If the case you migrated into is wider than the sff one I'd look into that. It just might give you the clearance you've been needing for the rest of your port connections.

mabye you can use 90° angeled sata cables so they can come down and not push the gpu up or whatsoever block it , it might work that way. In my case i melted the cable a bit so it could bend and it works perfectly

First off, thank you for this video, I have the same board and am almost done with my project (just waiting on the 24 pin to 6 pin adapter). The cable that you mention at 2:17, do you need to leave that to power external devices or can I opt to remove it and use the cable from my aftermarket PSU? Very helpful video!!! Tried one of those adapter cable I used on Elite 8300 (and worked OKay), but it fried my Elitedesk 800 G1while trying to interconect the fan sense pin with the tacheo pin. Could anyone elaborate on the differences in pinout between the two adapter cables, please?

I transferred a Dell 7010 motherboard a few years back. I also received the Fan error, Press F1 at Boot. For the Dell all it took was to buy the fan 4 pin adapters. Also, if the fan was not the right speed to match the old fan it would also report the F1 screen at boot. I purchased the board with power switch alone for 17 bucks. I needed at that time a cheap board to test some old parts. Liked the setup enough that I kept it as our HTPC till recently. Married board to a i5-3570/old 550ti/DRR3 24GB. BTW, I made my own wood test bench, not a case out garbage wood find. I Drilled 1" holes to manage wires/cables and used the 4 rounds pegs as feet. Under the board I screwed on two 2.5 SSD adapter.

I put a Lenovo M91 into a standard tower case, and had much the same issues that you did with the SATA connectors, because I used a GTX760-SC, which is a beast of a card physically. 2 of 4 SATA connectors are now out of reach. The case offers the ability to mount the GPU vertically, so I might go that route. It'll also let me use a PCI-e 1x USB-3 card. FTR it is an i5 2400, 8gb RAM, 1tb spinny disk, 120gb SSD.

@@LadybugAdventures Looking at the motherboard, you have clearance for a couple of PCI-e 1x slots, so rather than getting in to a bunch of case modding, you can just drop in a USB3 controller, and a SATA controller to run more drives off of, although if it's an inexpensive model you won't be able to boot from any of those drives.

Thanks for the video, I'm considering buying an HP Prodesk mid tower with the same layout. Saw the adapters on ebay and was looking for a video of someone using them. Thanks for the tip about the usb3 placement interferring with the gpu. You can get a usb3 adapter that does into one of the pcie slots, it gets power from a molex and internally the front usb3 connector can be attached to it, and externally its gives a couple of extra usb3 slots, last time I bought one it was about £7. Its a complete shame about the gpu blocking the motherboard sata connectors. I'll have to limit myself to a smaller graphics card.

@@LadybugAdventures I was thinking about this problem because I'm trying my first budget build and exploring ways to utilise this motherboard that I already have instead of buying a new one. I thought a good solution might be to get a PCI-E extension cable. That way you have a lot more room to position the card where it fits best, and helps eliminate one of the main draw backs of using this board with a large card which is blocking the USB and sata connections. You could also be creative where you mount it in terms of aesthetics and would suit making a stealth build in an unconventional case. I was even thinking of trying to fit everything inside an old 80s VHS player case haha. Still trying to decide on if to go that route though. To use this board for a large graphics card I will need those adapters for a new psu, which I can't find anywhere in my country and will need to be shipped in from overseas. In that time I might just be able to get an old LGA1150 motherboard and not need to use any adapters at all, plus I can use my current CPU and ram. But even they seem to be a bit hard to find at the moment!

How many watts does the new psu have? Im trying to make a similar setup with the same office computer but you are the first person I see that has changed the power supply. I can't find information about the maximum support of the motherboard or if the change affects anything. I assume the gpu is low profile? Great video btw :)

The power supply wattage shouldn't matter to the motherboard. I used a 430 watt semi modular power supply I think it was the CX-430. The main thing is making sure that the power adapter will work with your model of motherboard. My original GPU was a low profile GTX 1050. When I upgraded I went for a full height GTX 970. Technically my PSU is underpowered for the build but it runs stable so far. Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed.

Sounds like an error. Many times these computers have a code for the number of beeps or for lights flashing. You just have to look that up.

Just look at the monitor output. There should be video inputs on the back of the computer. Get a cable that matches output to input.

I did not. I still have to press F1 to get it to boot. I've tried a number of bios fixes, plugging in fans etc but nothing has worked yet. My daughter still games on this and has a blast.

But the following worked for me: Use the original HP front USB (that curved cable that connects to the long blue connector) and ensure the front USB 2 & 3 and Front Audio are connected with the old cable or whatever. The mobo pins just need to be connected to something for the error message to vanish. I have a card reader replacing/connected to front USB 2 (orange connector) (so original just hangs unconnected), now the USB 3 (blue) and front audio simply sit inside the case connected but unused. Not the most ideal fix as front audio and front usb 3 would be nice, but card reader was a priority. Also if you have rear fan not connected message, just connect a fan to P11CHF AN2 (brown connector). Hope that makes sense.

She has either eight or 12 GB of RAM. I never added any more. It's whatever came with the computer at the time. I'm sure you know this but some motherboards have specific placement if you're using two sticks. I would check the specifications on your model of motherboard. It'll say how you need to populate the lanes of memory, the maximum allowable etc.

Are you referring to a standoff for the cooler? You can use a simple nut at the back of the motherboard and screw into that. I just didn't want to go to the hardware store for the right size nut.

The USB and fan errors can be fixed by grounding certain pins on the headers going to the front panel. For example, if you look at the original cable that goes to the power switch assembly, you will see a black wire that is looped back. The fan error will go if you jumper the same pins on the motherboard header.

@@LadybugAdventures I got rid of all f1 errors as well for USB fan error I just plugged my 3 pin rear fan into the chfan2 port. For USB 1 not plugged in jump pin 8 and 10 together on USB port 2.0 pinout. For usb2 error jump pins 7/10 together on USB 3.0 pinout.

Mid tower is definitely easier to work with. Gives you the most space for different graphic cards. Same power supply upgrade issue with some sort of adapter cable. Never worked in one so don't know how reliable the adapters would be for that build. And it depends on what you want but the 3020 might just have two RAM slots while the one I was working on gives you four.

If you have that computer, then simply look at the motherboard to see what’s coming off of the front panel connectors. or you’ll just have to Google images of the motherboard, and or google what type of connecters are required for the power button button in front panel

1. I didn't plug in the USB 3. If you really needed it. You could use a PCI card or use a GPU cable extension and hang the GPU somewhere in the case. I didn't want to do either of those so I just didn't install the USB 3.0 2. The front panel headers could very well be different on that model. I would just Google front panel pinout for your model. 3. In the case that I built in there is one very large 200 mm fan on the top bringing air in and a 120 mm fan exhausting out the back. In this Silverstone case the power supply vents in from the front and exhausts out the side. I believe the CPU is a 95 watt TDP. Having some air flow is a good thing especially if you plan on putting in a hot graphics card.

I've seen people use a PCIe extension cable and simply hang the GPU on cable ties or something like that. If it's a thick card then you'll have to operate it without the side panel. If you don't care what it looks like then you can also get an old computer case for 5 to $10 on a used site and install it in there.

@@imgates4092 it could be three things. The CPU. The GPU. Or not enough RAM. In general I find an I-5 quad-core works best even the older ones. I've had a quad core A8 from AMD not work as well as an older I-5. At least 8 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM. For the GPU it really depends on the type of games you play. To play war zone a 4GB card is optimal. I've played fortnite on a 2GB GTX 1050. These are generalizations but that's a general guideline.

The upgraded power is for running the GPU alongside the CPU. In its original form you can always run multiple monitors as long as there is output for multiple devices. A lot of motherboards will have a VGA and an HDMI or DVI output.

Check the power consumption of the card you want to use. The power supply in these desktops is usually under 280 watts so you have to be careful about the cards you add. Also you need a low profile card. If you use a regular one you''ll have to keep the side panel off.

@@ayeshamel520 no such thing as too much. For example if you have a thousand watt PSU it will only use as much power as needed. The 1, 000 watts simply indicates the maximum load allowed. You can go wrong if you use a lower powered PSU. Check how much your processor and GPU need.

You are really an excellent speaker and soothing to listen to and any music at all ruins it. Your intro music is cute, and one can forward to avoid that. As you can imagine, if one wants to watch a bunch of your videos, then even hearing the intro over and over is not so soothing, but I can press ''L'' on keyboard w KZbin and it skips ahead several seconds. Any video you do is really nice...fixing anything, etc., I don't think people need music and I personally can't watch anymore b/c of the music. It is even ok if you have long pauses while doing something. That is soothing and nice. I can only think people who make videos think they need to entertain with different music and a pause will be boring or something. You are a good inspiration all around. Hope this helps :-) And then I can watch more again. :-)

Often times I watch and learn from other videos and I'm still searching for what works for me. I never used background music in a lot of my videos early on.
