CONVERTING MY MK2 ESCORT ENGINE BAY - FROM LHD TO RHD

Welcome back all,
In this weeks episode I have put together roughly a months worth of work into one video, that shows me converting the bay of my escort from LHD to RHD. This task would've been a LOT harder without the cut out templates, so I do need to thank Darren French once again for lending me them!
The task to convert the bay was a mission but now I can see it all coming together, I'm looking forward to tackling the next steps. I'm even thinking about spraying the bay and interior myself which will be another huge learning curve! Also don't forget to leave name suggestions below...

Great video Mitch. The car is getting together nicely. If i can give you a few tips from my experience regarding the knotted wheels or any wire wheel. The best tip i can give when using any wire wheel is the wear adequate protection. Long sleeves etc.Great to see you wearing eye protection👍 but for wire wheels i would recommend a full face shield. When those wires dislodge they can enter your skin on the arms, neck, cheeks, ears, everywhere not protected. Another tip, when purchasing wire wheels, check what the max speed those wheels are. Ensure the grinder speed is not greater than the recommended speed for the wheel. Great stuff.👌👌 From S.A.

Looking good mitch, good to see you showcasing your welding steps, dont be afraid to get them welds ground a little lower in future, I recon you could almost make them look invisible, get a mask for welding and grinding 5-10mins here and there over many years is a long time exposed. Keep up the good work 👍

Great work mate 👍, if I can offer a few tips from experience: don’t bother with weld through primer unless its on an area you won’t be able to get to after welding for example the inside of a sill (your just wasting your money), the knotted wheels on a grinder are great but don’t apply to much pressure or spend too much time in one place because they create a fair bit of heat as they spin far faster than a drill and can warp the panels, when welding a repair panel in try to do spots an inch atleast apart and really take your time to not put to much heat into one area as the panel will warp and then you will end up spending loads of time with the filler later down the line.

100%, the knotted wheels are fine for under seal etc, but are too coarse for visible bodywork. 3M clean and strip discs (or equivalent discs) are much better for that kind of work. Your also totally right about weld through primer, it’s only for inaccessible areas and it should be removed on accessible bodywork before it’s over coated with conventional primer or paint. 👍🏻

Don't forget the strengthening gussets between frame rails/inner fender/firewall, check out some old rally cars if you need more info, this really stiffens up the front end

Re route your wiring loom under the front wheel arch The top hole is for the Speedo cable the one to the left of it is accelerator pedal cable then theirs one for the clutch cable

That's a heap of work, everything is looking proper. For the name... first need to work out if the car is a boy or a girl, that takes time i think. Nice jobs and with the engine bay being empty. You could make and fit strengthing corner plates. Like the Rally spec and top of the strut tops. As you mite fit a ST 170 engine in one day just check at RS spec and rally mk2 Escorts. 💯👍

Hi, great videos, I find it easier when repairing panels to make a panel up that is the right size, then tack it to the old piece, and cut around it with a cutting disc, then the new piece will fit in perfect instead of trimming it to fit a hole you have already cut, Cheers

Not usually a fan of naming cars myself or calling them "she" "her" but, maybe FOURSCORT or something. Marcus Hayes beat you to maude. Work is coming along nicely mate. As previously mentioned, maybe try the 3m clean and strip disc. I can see what you're using is working well but can be harsh. Also get a good face shield if you can, it really sucks when some of the bits and pieces hit you at 100 mps. Roloc cup are good for nooks and cranies, best used with the correct air tool. What car shows are you looking at for the rest of the season ? I'm looking at The British motor show at Fairford and Retro Rides Gathering at Mallory park.
