My parents were never the type of people to let me get a horse.. I have been riding for a few years now. What I did was I told them that It would be easier to get my own horse and take it to the near by pony club, because all the rising schools are 45mins away from where I live. I have shown them that i'm responsible e.g. keeping my room tidy, looking after my own pets, helping them out etc. I also am very lucky to go to my dads work and earn a good amount of cash to pay for costs. You should also write down all the costs and see if you can do halves. Surprisingly, they finally let me get a lease horse, I have found one and I have trialled her, now I'm getting her in a few days :))

Where was this video when I was like 13? I love it because I did a lot of what you did and I even went as far to create a business portfolio and barn design at the age of roughly 13-14 for the stables I was planning on owning someday. It literally detailed everything from how much it would all cost to the number of stalls offered for boarders vs. lesson horses, the rates for lessons, the hours of operation, rules; etc. I'm talking, this was a binder packed FULL of my plans that I casually left lying around for my dad to see; he owns his own business so I thought he'd be super impressed and FINALLY give in. I really left no room for doubt in how dedicated I was and how willing I was to do anything to make it work. My stepmom told me later that they had both seen it and were really impressed by my level of seriousness and dedication so, I thought, YES! HE'S FINALLY GOING TO LET ME RIDE! Five years later and still no real lessons or a horse of my own. Now I'm a freshman in college and I'm looking at barns in the area to just do it on my own #nevergiveuponyourdreams :)

I've been riding for 2 years (I'm 19, yes I started learning as an adult) I have started learning to jump, I know dressage to elementry level and have done horse courses even before I learnt to ride to take care of horses. I have three barns literally within 5 minutes (bonus is I live right on the cusp of suburbia and semi rural areas) all three are a flat rate of just $50 a week (do all the mucking, feeding yourself and just pay fir the yard) and I've calculated total monthly cost would be $680 (that's including agistment, petrol/gas, equine insurance, feed, bedding, farrier, worming.) and still can't convince them Funny thing is my riding school allow us to lease some if there homebred horses (they used to be a stud) but it's only fir experienced riders as most of the horses fir lease are younger than the school horses and it's more bloody expensive to lease from them at $280+ a WEEK than to own my own 😪 So now I am starting up my own online equestrian apparel shop to create an income for myself so I can buy my own horse. Coz I'm bloody sick of wishing and waiting every birthday/Christmas thinking this will be the year I get one and it isn't 😭

I honestly try to 'convince' them so much! I work at the barn every Sunday, doing buckets, turning out, bringing in horses, sweeping, but, I take lessons every other week. At the end of the days that I work, I get an hour with one of the horses to ride,lunge or do whatever else. But, I STILL haven't cantered yet. It gets so annoying watching 7 year olds doing jumps while I'm just trotting. Ughhhhh. My coach hates me I think.

i used to go to a barn with my trainner every saturday from 5:30 am till around 12 and i loooved it i helped cleaning washing feeding horses, also went on free rides once a while and i did natural horsemanship and riding lessons (i do dressage) but then the owner switched barns and my trainner will not longer go there so we (i say we because she is a friend of my parents and she's like my permanent trainner i love her) had to change barns and my parents totally want to get me a horse because i had like personal problems and they totally saved my life so they know horses are a really important part in my life and having one would be a big step forward for myself, but we are like middle high class 5 member 3 dog family and they can't afford to have another "child" it's sad but i can't do anything about it but save up as much as i can and help my parents pay for it. because they do know i'm committed the problem is the stupid money! it's so sad :'(

I totally agree with the idea that you can't "convince" your parents to buy you a horse. It's way too big of a commitment both time and money wise. I tried my fair share of begging my parents to let me lease a horse, and my mother's response was that "I would love to get you a horse, but we just don't have enough money." she says perhaps in a couple years if we have enough money, I can lease, but for now I'm content with lessons and working :) Great video, thank you!

Sorry I agree, but if you haven't been around horses for a while and realised how much work there is involved , then you should take lessons. I would say to beg your mum, and propose to maybe pay for the feul to get to the school, or bike there is it is closer, and half the cost for the lessons. My mum hates the local riding school, especially now that one of the horses they were meant to be 'training' was pushed past the breaking point and got its eye stabbed out on a stake when it jumped out of the pen. anyway I get lessons from the my mum who used to ride professionally, and the neighbour who owns a horse that I can use.

Great video! As a parent, this is right on! You have to PROVE that you can afford it and that you are mature enough to do it. And yes, it will take YEARS to do! Kids (and adults) get excited about things, but that excitement wears off. You can't let that happen when you own a horse. I had to do ALL of the calculations you did to convince my husband that we should get a horse for our girls (and me too!!!). Good job! You sound very mature!

Is it weird that I don't want a horse...I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HORSES!!!!!!! Reasons why I can't have a horse •I'm only 10,my parents would think it would be silly to own one •(I don't know for sure) I don't believe you can ride any other horse except yours •I just don't have enough time to do this •We just don't have enough money The reason I should have a horse •I'm very responsible!!! I take care of feeding my pets, brushing my 5 year old sisters hair everyday!! (She's a brat) •I absolutely LOVE horses and I'm committed to it •I'm fine with mucking,feeding, washing, and everything else It's just a very awkward time right now since I'm moving and I might have to change schools, My dad has been on a trip for 2 weeks and he just got back today!! I just don't want to put that stress on my mom and dad!!

Hi, a quick tip to those looking to buy a horse. I'm not sure how it works in other countries but in nz it is a REALLY good idea to insure your horse. It is actually really cheap and it means you don't have to worry about surpise vet calls, bills ect.

@beckatanner17867 жыл бұрын
Romilly Potter I live in gisborne nz, and have found my dream horse on trade me and I am about half way to saving up for him he is a lot cheaper then most horses that I found on trade me. I just hope my parents will cooperate!! Only problem is he lives in Auckland and that's a 6 hour drive at least from here!! I doubt I will get to have him. but my parents told me to buy a saddle before a horse, but I was like, you can't just buy a saddle that will fit any horse. I mean like, just because when mum you were growing up you had one saddle for your three horses, that does not mean that one saddle will fit any horse I get!! I'm quite a quiet person at school and get good grades luckily, so I am just saving up slowly, I do the local paper run which earns me 100 dollars a month, but still I'm only 13 so yeah. I don't get money fast. But anyway I shouldn't keep this comment going forever😂
@maypotter9357 жыл бұрын
Good on you for making things happen yourself! It definitely does take a long time to save up to buy horses but don't give up, I know what it is like. I have been taking lessons since I was 4 and didn't get my first pony till I was 9 and she was a $500 little welsh pony that had been out of work for 8 years and now I have 2 horses one of which I pay for myself. I would wait to get a horse first before you buy a saddle unless you buy one with an interchangable gullet (the wintec saddles are very cheap but reliable) but even these have the potential to not fit your horse. Goodluck xx
@beckatanner17867 жыл бұрын
Romilly Potter Thanks, I was looking at a saddle with one, but then I found an old english saddle in my grandparents basement, which is in pretty good condition, it just needs a little time spend on it and it will be good. It also fits me, so I'm hoping that it will clean up well.

I currently lease, but I would really like my own horse, because I ride on a drill team, and I would rather have my own horse so I could ride and practice more often (I am homeschooled so I could easily be at the barn more) and it would be MY HORSE, so I could teach the horse whatever I want. But my Dad will never let me have a horse unless I can cover 100% of the costs, I am looking for jobs I can do but hey still won't cover everything. :(

I was wondering if you still have the outline of all your expenses etc.. it would really help to see it to copy all of them down for my own expenses (since I'm sure you listed practically everything!!)

Horses are my life! I followed all of your steps and everything! But it isn't looking good. My mom and dad say that we don't have the money. And the community we live in, they don't allow horses! That's the worst rule ever!!!!! The only way I can get a horse now is if I lease one. I used to take horse back riding lessons, but I couldn't continue. My family doesn't have the money to sign me up again, so I will have to make money. Wish me luck!!!

My mum says it's about the time and commitment you need, I've written pages and pages of the reasons I should be able to have a horse......Then I did the pros and cons and solved all the cons I said I would save up and once I've got all the money I would pay my parents back. I STILL can't have a horse although my mum said she would talk about it with my dad. I'm only 10 years old so I can't get a job......I also answered all of my mum and dads questions, what do I do now??

Coral Equestrian show your parents you really want a horse by maybe taking lessons, and possibly helping out at a local stable, you may also be able to go to a horse camp. get around horses more and hope for the best

I'm nowhere near ready for a horse but I would like to lease one! The only problem is my parents don't want to take the time to drive me to the barn I want to lease at :/ I also don't think they understand how much I want it. They don't know anything about horses or the sport of horseback riding and aren't willing to learn anything about it. I mean, I have been doing weekly lessons for 2 years and they have NEVER seen me ride except for the show I did a week ago. I don't know what to do. If anyone has advice I could really use it!

maybe. I feel like the only thing with that is that I want to have a family when I'm older. i really think the only appropriate time for this is now. I don't know what to do.
