As a German, there are things we can learn from India. I feel like the sacrifice he mentions has a bad reputation in the West. It's frowned upon to give up a little of yourself for someone else, and I believe that's the wrong approach. I know people in their thirties who still won't move in with their partner of 10 years because they're afraid of the commitment. Like, get over yourselves. Nothing is ever perfect; loving someone means also accepting that not everything will be perfect, always, and understanding that it's not always about YOU alone.

@@martinn.6082You don't understand, im indian and you are missing a lot of cultural context. Indians by large are not very individualistic, marriage isn't romantic to them. Most marriages here are arranged. So someone like you would hate the culture here because the roles, expectations and dynamics have more to do with pleasing society, parents than individual fullfilment. There is drastically less social freedom here. If you are hyper individualstic, an ignorant and surface level observation of indian society might inspire you to commit and socialise more for good but that doesn't mean my culture is better. Its really not. I hear Scandinavians have figured out balancing community and individualism, maybe we all should look up to them.

@@justforfunlol2258 yeah, I have never been to India and can't tell. I was purely focusing on the "sacrifice" aspect in relationships. I live in Berlin, Germany, and not wanting to commit to someone because the relationship is not 100% perfect all of the time is a big thing here.

@@martinn.6082also domestic violence/abuse is very high in india and is always left unreported due to our culture. Most of the families feel having divorce is a bad thing and brings a bad name for their family and just try to move on instead of reporting it.

@@justforfunlol2258 as an indian I cannot agree more with you, in india and in many asian societies marriage is not merely seen between 2 people rather its seen in a more broader fashion between 2 families and that makes leaving a marriage a taboo and extremely difficult thing in india. I think both india and the west are 2 extremes and both are wrong, there can be no basis to a relationship where one doesn't respect the other, where only one partner is expected to compromise and sacrifice, but sadly here in India I've seen marriages in my own family based on these expectations. To others the marriage may seem well, but on the inside there is a rot but couples keep dragging the marriage just to keep in line themselves with societal expectations. Divorce may always not be a negative thing, it could well be an empacipator for someone not happy with the marriage. Marriage takes compromise and sacrifice but that ought to be mutual, it cannot be one sided, unfortunately that's the case in majority of marriages in india where the wife has to sacrifice her career, her freedom her dreams majority of the times. So if 2 people are ready to what it takes mutually then only a marriage can be a success.

@@vaasmontenegro2016 Publicly shaming people is the BEST and easiest way to get people to change negative traits about themselves. The thing is though you have to give them a reasonable and achievable "out". Meaning you need to shame them but also give them a path for redemption. Shaming doesn't help if there isn't a way to become better and end the shaming. Like bullying someone about their looks. If their face is just ugly or disfigured and there's nothing they can do to fix it then shaming them will only hurt them. But bullying them for something that they can change, like being fat, absolutely can help them. Why has the United States (and the West in general) had such a massive surge of negative traits in their population over the last 30-40 years? Because people are soft and unwilling to tell each other the uncomfortable truth, and those that do are then shamed themselves for being "mean". So we're shaming people for doing something that positively effects people in the long run while at the same time encouraging and often even praising negative behavior that hurts people. That's a big part of the reason why our society is in the shitter.

@@sdawg573ok dude i actually do live there part of every year And I've heard a lot of stories of just literal familial abuse that continues because people feel so obligated to their families even when they're being taken advantage of. To a less extreme degree I think that obligation stifles a lot of personally held ambitions and dreams. It's not all negative though and the family support in more positive conditions and closeness are really a good thing. I've also seen 50+ countries across the world and most parts of the European western world aren't as hyper individualistic as the US but American individualism is rooted in its history, the settler mentality. Going it alone is a cultural priority, and that manifests in people's willingness to cut off people. It's isolating, and undermines social harmony but it does create a sort of toughness and well-roundedness. I know Indian guys especially who can barely tie their own shoelaces. @sdawg573

It's a country without any history or identity. It's basically a 300 yr startup. And familial abuse? This doesn't happen anywhere else? Lol. Giving up closely held ambitions and dreams? That’s not true at all. For example, (1) Americans are literally _the_ most charitable people on earth. We rank no. 1 out of all countries for donating to charity, _sacrificing_ our own money to help others. (2) America is a very workaholic country compared to… virtually everywhere else. Americans regularly _sacrifice_ leisure for work. Even people who are middle and upper class, who could afford to make less money, still work at least a 40 hour week, without fail, until retirement age in their 60s or 70s even. And we like sitting around and napping in the day and having time off just like anywhere else… but we don’t do that. Why? Because culturally it is ingrained in us that you need to work as much as possible and as hard as possible to contribute to your family and the greater society. It is frowned upon here if you could be making more money for your family but choose not to. (3) As a country, America regularly comes to the financial and military aid of its allies. More than any other nation on earth. Many Americans feel this is a moral responsibility as both the most militarily and economically powerful country the world has ever known. This is a sacrifice in money and lives.

But in India, we don't want people to live in abusive situations right ? I know divorce is common for even small reasons in America but Indians who don't feel family pressure do that too. That's a perspective n attitude thing, n therapy n parenting can raise people to figure that out. But divorce is necessary, n we don't want people in America or India to stay in abusive relationships or with people when they realise it's wrong even after marriage. It's not like India doesn't have a long history of cheating, abuse, wife trafficking etc. either. It was such an issue it often found its way into movies and porn. And people were forced to marry even if they wanted to focus more on their life at the moment, or didn't think they could handle that responsibility then. Marriage isn't the best thing in India, n while certain very few people are privileged enough to find happy homes or marry someone they trust n love n celebrate marriage for that, for most it's still a compulsion and another step away from being able to live out a full life.

"In this country, they don't sacrifice." Words of wisdom, my friend, you hit the nail on the head! Of course, no one wants to sacrifice. It's hard. Most things in life worth doing are. However, without sacrifice, you will never experience true love. Sacrifice is how you show others that you love them more than your own comfort. I'm sure this will ruffle the feathers of some self-centered snowflakes who think the world revolves around them, but if everyone subscribed to this broken ideology, we wouldn't have a functional society. Which is, unfortunately, where we are headed as a country.

That's true. Only toxic marriages that involves physical altercations are broken but simple blabbers and arguments can be remedied. Learning from your old mistakes and try to be a better person. Not only it helps people have more self awareness but also be aware of how it would affect people around them and especially their young children. Relationships and family should last more than 30 years because that's where you'll find meaning in life. Leisure is important but that's just a spice or a condiment to life. Individualism loses its charm when you reach that age where you seek security and solitude. You'd feel secure knowing that your kids are doing good, you would enjoy solitude when you don't need to say anything for your spouse to understand you and that enjoying each other's company while watching grass growing in the backyard. We should always remember that no man is an island as humans are social creatures

It’s not always that black and white. My parents are from the Philippines where divorce is illegal so families stay together, with this mentality my mom has endured 30 years of cheating, verbal and physical abuse. Sometimes sacrificing a marriage could mean saving yours and your children’s lives. People look at Gen z and millennials that don’t want to get married when in reality they actually fear enduring a failed marriage after seeing their unhappy parents stay in their marriages far longer than they should have. For the record, I’m married and that was because I was incredibly picky and incredibly lucky. I love marriage but not everyone is lucky to have a marriage they can safely work on.

Yes!! I’m Mexican American. We were taught to honor and respect marriage. But above all my mom always said marriage is hard work. Don’t get married until you find the person you are willing to fight with and fight for, for the rest of your life. I’ve now been married 19 years and she was completely right.

I remember as a kid we were traveling in a train and I was with my elder sister and my mother only, and opposite to us there were two American young women traveling in the same berth. At that time my English wasn't so fluent but my Mother told me, that the entire time one of them was constantly cribbing and putting down indian women and for being married the entire time to one person, putting our values down even looking at us and talking with a disdain on her face, she probably didn't know that we could understand her pretty well and at a hault she wanted Tea and my mom instructed her simply in fluent English, her mouth was left open

As a Christian i m ashamed of other Christians, marriage in church is a promise in front of father son and holy spirit once you do that you cannot leave other person no matter what, and if you do then you can't marry in any church in the world ever again but now pope passed the rule that you can get married in church any number of times INSULT TO GOD,in the 1970s people wanted realtionship to start family now no one wants to have children just want to have sex wealth and try to get into a realtionship thinking the other person will solver their mental problems and needs this generation is not even fit enough to raise kids
