I was saddened to find out that Shin'ichi Chiba passed away recently and then the radio at my shop came on to announce that a popular Canadian comic has just passed away and I expected to hear Jim Carrey and thought oh no but once they said it was Norm my heart just sank even lower than if it was Jim.

I'm 38 and Norm has been my absolute favorite stand up since his SNL days. He came to Tulsa a number of years ago and I could have easily gotten a meet and greet package but I felt I own my own business and I have a family so I decided to work instead of taking the night off because I thought it would be selfish of me to do something just for me. I told myself, "I'll catch him next time". I'm regretting that decision tonight.

For all you know, his son could be very well taken care of and his mom was fine. I think more than him getting in trouble for using the R word when he shouldn’t have was him losing his fortune three times because of a gambling addiction. He also spent lots in between. He never blamed anyone for his finances but him

I listened to just about every interview with Norm Macdonald, he talked about building some wealth for his Son and Mother when he's gone, take of that what you will. @@keinelust9092 I'm not saying that what they did was right, but the climate was that way. I don't know if he "had" to do the View or picked it or why it was so awkward. If you read most of his very long print interviews, where he wasn't "on'", doing a bit, he was intelligent, liberal to a degree, kind and never wanted to hurt anyone. I'm sure he had his moments but he seemed to gear his act toward a certain audience. Norm is he had a nephew with down syndrome or a son who was autistic wouldn't have said what he said, but even I made mistakes in speech and we are the same age. He shouldn't have been treated like that but part of it was him. He didn't react the way he did in some interviews. I don't think he liked "live" as much being so private. He once said, I realized watching a show on racism, how "old and white" I was in my bubble. That would never be in an act of his. His wealth, what it was didn't hinge on that remark, he lost and got a lot of money beforehand. His brother seems well off and his mom is fine. His ex once they parted, I'm sure saved what she could but his son knew he loved him and money isn't love. I'm sure if he had a brain, he separated his savings from his son's money but whatever he did, he was human and complicated but never cruel. Maybe years from now his son will talk of him but I doubt it.

Norm was so talented that his spontaneous lines from interacting with someone were funnier than most comedian's most rehearsed lines. He was like a musician whose random spontaneous jam had better guitar licks than most people's studio albums. Just amazing. Mindblowing intelligence disguised as an everyman.

In a world full of great comics, Norm reigned supreme! Just watch his cadence and timing on his set at the roast of Bob Saget!! As a fellow Canadian, he made me so proud of the talent and perseverance of true Canadians! We had no idea of his battle with cancer, and in a way he was laying out his greatest punchline ever! Old chunk of coal is gone from this mixed up, twisted world, when we need his irreverence the most!! Take that! I’m glad he is at rest, and I’m sad we no longer have him to look to! It’s strange. I think the value of Norm to the culture has just continued to skyrocket after his passing. He never had a huge show, a huge movie, or a blockbuster special. I think he really just loved making comedians laugh. Like when he was on Conan, he was trying to kill Conan. Same with Letterman, etc. Some of his best material was on those chairs. I obviously don’t know if that’s true, but none of the big comedians ever killed like he did in that environment. They were talking to the audience. He was seeing if he could get the only laugh that mattered to him and then won the audience in his attempt.

In these past few days, I’ve heard so many other comedians and celebrities talk about how they were friendly with Norm but didn’t really know him very well. The first time I saw Norm was on Leno's Tonight Show. He said, "I don't floss, but I do the next best thing: I tell my dentist I do." His laconic, subtle deadpan delivery made my sister and I howl. I was a fan instantly. I remember he had just had a son, and he said "It's funny Jay, because very young children...they can sense evil. Here I'll show you what I mean..." and on the screen for the audience in the studio and at home they showed a picture of Jay Leno holding Norm's infant son and Leno was making a silly face towards the camera while the young toddler was crying in terror. Obviously a candid moment between the two that Norm used to mess with Jay and get a laugh. I wish I could see that show again. That was the first time I'd seen him, and fell in love with his work and there was no looking back. He's second to Carlin in my book. R.I.P. you ol' lump of coal.
