Oh Absolutely!!! And "is anybody even going to be interested in that.....? I am in Adelaide, South Australia. It's Autumn/Fall here right now. I would LOVE to email Johanna with ten things I found fascinating (not just interesting) about your gorgeous Mother's vlog. We don't have frost here, or snow the way we garden here is VERY VERY DIFFERENT to the way you garden. We have gardens all through winter. And flowers and fruit and vegetables growing. Pumpkin is a winter harvest here. Yet your family eats them in summer. So we are eating them in the same months but in different seasons. Weird huh? Oranges and lemons and other citrus all are ready in the middle of winter here. Rosemary plants are grown in the middle of roads and round about a here because it thrives with perhaps a prune and very little water (it's quite dry where we live) and our rosemary bushes last YEARS!!!! (Because we don't have frost or snow).... which is why we need to prune them. We live in the capital city of our State, and we live a 45 minute walk from the center of town (So we can do it but normally drive. Our city spreads out narrowly along the ocean and pushed between the ocean and the hills. Most people live in houses here (not apartments) but as "urban sprawl" makes it further and further for people to get in to the city (if they need) old small houses on big lots get bulldozed and two big houses with tiny yards get put in its place. This means gardens are getting smaller. We live in a lovely old cottage that is on a decent city block. But it was extended for modern living.... a huge shed effected.... a large pergola put up.... a pool and spa and pool area added and now the garden is small and the man made area takes over. But we love our garden. You have a HUGE vegetable garden. And a large outdoor space. No pool. No pergola. But lots of lovely room to explore and enjoy. I'm sure you love being outside too. Our zinnias and sunflowers we planted along our sunny but narrow driveway path next to concrete and a solid fence (a garden bed about 15 inches deep and about 10 yards long) are finishing and making seeds while your family is planting seeds. So many similarities. So many differences. Fascinating.

She was just being snarky, honestly! She knows tons of people who don't have gardens, like both sets of grandparents which we visit weekly. We live way more in the "normal world" than viewers on KZbin realize. Because I share 2 twenty minute snippets of our life weekly, people tend to fill in the gaps and imagine we live in this little insulated world where kids know only our own lifestyle which is far from the truth!

@@CottageontheCorner I was actually fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a huge garden. Our balcony is quite narrow but my husband does enjoy planting some herbs, tomatoes and lots of flowers on it 😊

Well, I just loved seeing Daniel walking around the flower beds with a weed stuck in his neck collar. It seemed to annoy him and it was so sweet to see that he had no idea what was bothering him. It took me a long time to figure out that less is more, less garden is easier to manage which gives more good produce. And yes very good to get those beautiful young helpers in the garden. Show them give them a plot to plant what they want. Y'all have a beautiful homestead. God speed

For beginners, pots are super easy and there are so many things that do great in pots, even potatoes! Seed packets now have a 'container friendly' image on them and then tell how many plants to put in a 12" pot. I thinking a novice mistake would be trying to plant everything from seed. Its fine to buy starts and maybe plant the super easy to grow things like cucumbers from seed when you are first getting started. Also a very sunny (full sun) location is essential for success for most veggies. There are so many guides on the internet that help with your zone and what grows at what time of year. The last thing is to mulch with something, I use straw. I don't like weeding and this helps a ton, also helps with not having to water is much. Hope this is helpful for someone just starting out :) fun video as always!!

Lisa, have you watched Living Traditions Homestead or Roots and Refuge? We started with square foot gardening, then tried Back to Eden (which was great but we can't get free wood chips) We switched to the weed fabric last year and it has been LIFE Changing! We added the cattle panel arches that Roots and Refuge did we made them a bit more sturdy and did 5 in a row! We did it the 1st time last year and trained vines up them and it has made a HUGE difference for us! We started the weed fabric and irrigation suggested by Living Traditions Homestead and it also has helped so much so much less weeding!! We have HUGE weed issues and I can't be out in the heat for a long time so these have both made such big differences for us! Even my husband is enjoying gardening more (he usually isn't very involved as it is to much work)!!

It’s amazing watching kids help. We went from 2 acres down to a postage stamp size yard. I still grow veggies. My granddaughter has helped me since she was probably 18 months old. She is nine now. She loves it. My grandson is four and started helping when he was two. We have so many memories growing things in the garden. I love it!!

An important tip also in planting is to make sure that you are using good soil a lot of people don't realize you need to feed the soil if you're reusing a garden spot that's been used for many years the minerals have been used up in that area so get some cow manure or something like that makes it with your dirt and that is usually why people will have big plants but no production in other words the plants are huge but no tomatoes or they're small just food for thought have a blessed day everyone God loves you

This would still leave you plenty of garden beds to tend yourself, and keep things manageable s well. ❤️. Just love your garden. I grow mine in grow pots I found on Amazon...I plant tomatoes cucumbers squash zucchini jalapeños green bell peppers and cantaloupe. These are 20 gallon pots and I absolutely love them. Can't wait to see your beautiful flowers!! I plant some also. My garden is my stress reducer!!

My grandfather worked for the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and taught me so much when I was growing up. For beginners it would be best to buy potting Mix (not soil) and a containger and some plants that have started (I get mine from Walmart if needed). You can't fail at that. If you want flowers you should plant easy spreading perenials like black eyed susans (they are also really low maintenance)and chives which have beautiful purple ball flowers. You also get a Ton of seedsfrom both of those and they are very tolerant of all weather conditions.You should save the seeds from your jalepenos and jost plant them outside. They're super easy to grow.

Last year I put diapers in the bottom of my pots and they really helped keep moisture in the pots longer! Just thought I would share that tip. 😊 Happy Gardening!

Parsley and basil can be used for pesto. I blend in my kitchen aid the herb with olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and you could use red onions...so good on the sour dough bread that I make thanks to you.

Cilantro is best planted intermintinly & often. I get cilantro seeds in the bulk section in the spice section so I can plant once every week when I water. After they bolt I let them reseed. That way I always have cilantro. It is so budget friendly.

My family and I compost as well! Are used an old tractor tire and I just throw my vegetable and fruit scraps and old flowers from bouquets into it, and I accidentally grew a tomato plant so I have a large tomato plant growing in my compost!

You should try to plant lavender (English lavender is best) they like dry sandy soil and you get alot of nice lavender you can use for sachets.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is bad to over plant. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have noticed that my garden tends to lean toward flowers more and more. I love your choices of seeds! Zinnias make me so happy and you get a LOT of blooms for very little effort. (I saw Green Envy, also one of my faves!) I’ve also grown those shorter sunflowers, I can’t remember the name, but they were fun to grow. Growing up I always saw these little older ladies planting gladiola, and other old fashion flowers with their gardens and that’s one reason I do it, the other is being able to cut bouquets to give neighbors and friends. Good luck with your garden this year! I can’t wait until my first fresh tomato! 🍅

Lisa, good advice on gardening..my motto..jump in and just do it. When I started 30+ yrs. ago my first garden was a herb garden..can’t go wrong. I always buy starter plants too, way to go. Also, find the perennials you like and which fit your garden and plant them. Very low maintenance and the rewards are endless year after year.👍...love, Liz🌼🌸

Fungal issues. I have followed roots and refuge and she trims her tomatoes for suckers up so no leaves touch the ground and there us mire airflow. That should also help. Live the essential oil idea. Brianna sprays her milk cow while milking to lesson flies with an essential oil mix

One of my favorite memories last year was my then 2.5 year old walking onto the garden and getting ground cherries off the deck. He also loved helping to pull the “bunny” carrots and radish plants. Each tug that revealed one would be a big WOW!

Some year try beets, I grow them for the greens. I clip them all summer and use them like spinach. I also rinse and put in freezer bags. After they are frozen, crunch them up and use in smoothies and soups all winter long! At the end of the summer, I pull the beets to eat or feed to the pigs! I over plant also!

Try putting straw around your veggies to keep the weeds down. Less work weeding. You are right about starting seeds. I love shopping for plants so I think next year I am just going to buy most of mine and plant a couple of heirloom for fun. I grow Cherokee Green tomatoes and Indigo Rose tomatoes for fun and because they can’t be found in the stores.

Good strategy Lisa. We used to have 4 raised beds huge ones and we took out two since it was just produced so much for the two of us to use even giving away some. Much more manageable now and I don’t go crazy keeping up with it. Love this time of year and just getting out their to play in the dirt!😊

WOW Lisa everything you said gardening is exactly what I have gone through. I over plant, I have difficulty with cilantro bolting. Peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers have always been my best in my garden. I need to get a sprinkler system that would help so much but very expensive. I love that you are so honest with how much work it is. Especially that you want to do things with the family. That has always been number one with me :)

We love that pantry salsa! Years ago in college, I kept canned corn, black beans and tomatoes in my closet so I always had it ready for potlucks etc my sil had given me that same salsa recipe!. Add balsamic vinegar for a little extra tang.

Your sweet daughter honestly thinks your family life is the norm. As far as everyone having a garden, among my friends and neighbors, one has a few tomatoes and onions growing in pots on her patio. I make an effort with tomatoes some years, but the birds get way more of them than I do. Last year I made a tent like structure out of netting, but I am disabled, and getting in and out of it was a hassle, and in south east Texas, watering almost daily was a must to keep them alive (the tomatoes, not the birds). I have been reading about different methods, so hopefully I can try again next year. I applaud you and your husband for the work and effort you put into raising and teaching your kiddos. I do enjoy seeing them grow through your videos.

I started everything indoors. Lol I love it. We also used only grow bags this year and I find I am over watering so I am glad I dont have to water daily (temps in the high 80s). The only thing I dont enjoy is hardening off. Our weather is so up and down. I recommend starting small but do a few of each thing that you want to grow well so that if one dies, you have another. You can also handle them differently and see how best they handle them. Keep a notebook to jot little things in for the next year.

Take your rosemary inside during winter months. Just dig it up pot it and water sparingly through winter x

Oh Absolutely interesting!!! "is anybody even going to be interested in that.....? I am in Adelaide, South Australia. It's Autumn/Fall here right now. I would LOVE to email Johanna with ten things I found fascinating (not just interesting) about your gorgeous Mother's vlog. We don't have frost here, or snow the way we garden here is VERY VERY DIFFERENT to the way you garden. We have gardens all through winter. And flowers and fruit and vegetables growing. Pumpkin is a winter harvest here. Yet your family eats them in summer. So we are eating them in the same months but in different seasons. Weird huh? Oranges and lemons and other citrus all are ready in the middle of winter here. Rosemary plants are grown in the middle of roads and round about a here because it thrives with perhaps a prune and very little water (it's quite dry where we live) and our rosemary bushes last YEARS!!!! (Because we don't have frost or snow).... which is why we need to prune them. We live in the capital city of our State, and we live a 45 minute walk from the center of town (So we can do it but normally drive. Our city spreads out narrowly along the ocean and pushed between the ocean and the hills. Most people live in houses here (not apartments) but as "urban sprawl" makes it further and further for people to get in to the city (if they need) old small houses on big lots get bulldozed and two big houses with tiny yards get put in its place. This means gardens are getting smaller. We live in a lovely old cottage that is on a decent city block. But it was extended for modern living.... a huge shed effected.... a large pergola put up.... a pool and spa and pool area added and now the garden is small and the man made area takes over. But we love our garden. You have a HUGE vegetable garden. And a large outdoor space. No pool. No pergola. But lots of lovely room to explore and enjoy. I'm sure you love being outside too. Our cosmos, zinnias and sunflowers we planted along our sunny but narrow driveway path next to concrete and a solid fence (a garden bed about 15 inches deep and about 10 yards long) are finishing and making seeds while your family is planting seeds. So many similarities. So many differences. Fascinating.
