Cooking snapping turtle and corn bread from scratch in the cabin fireplace. Shelling and grinding corn and Wheat berries to make fresh cornbread from scratch. Cornbread cooked in the cast iron stove.

I love the log cabin, fireplace, and furnishings. It's a lovely home. I love your outdoor pizza oven, too. Lavender loves to snuggle by the fireplace to stay toasty warm.

Amazing bone structure in turtles. It's crazy the angles and how the animal is put together. Love turtle anyway it's prepared, but with that said, I can't stand the fat from turtle. Great episode!

I had a friend that used to give me snapping turtles all the time, he caught while fishing. He thought they were trash. Then I showed him how to clean and cook them. He has never gave me another one since 😂

You never cease to amaze me. My father always made snapper soup. And my elderly relatives ate whatever was put in front of them since the grew up in the depression. They were grateful for a simple meal.

I would be curious to try turtle. Growing up in southern Ontario we had snapping turtles on our property. Never knew we could eat them. However, we did have bullfrogs. I was the frog catcher. Loved catching frogs. My mother told me one day we could eat frog legs. So we went and caught a bunch. They are like little chicken wing drumettes and taste a pinch of fish, but very good. My mother floured them and pan-fried them too. So much of pioneer life has been lost over the decades. I find it all so interesting. I like to see the old ways come back to living off the land and how to do things from scratch.

Very very nice comment! I’m a story telling so I love to hear other peoples stories! I believe some of the old ways are on their way bad as people get tired of the rat race.

I’ve always wanted to try turtle. The only time I’ve caught turtles is when I was fishing for catfish on a trotline. Heard there was 7 different meats in them.

How old and what brand is that grain mill? I've been wanting to get one myself as I enjoy making bread and want to mill my own flour.
@logcabinlifestyle
@logcabinlifestyle 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the mill doesn’t have any markings on it. I would guess late 1800s though. I’ve never used one that works as well as it does

12 year old neighbor wanted to shoot a mocking bird. I told him if he did , he would have to clean and cook it and then eat it. It was not good but he learned a lesson, If you kill it then you eat it.

Snapping turtle brings back memories. When we were small there was a huge snapping turtle in the water swimming hole at my Uncle's. He would not let us go swimming without taking his female Great Dane. She would baby sit us and not let us go out too far, before going in and pulling us back to shore by our bathing suits. I have eaten turtle and frog's legs, both quite good. I do see turtles sunning on rocks in the ponds near our farm. If I were in need of food, I guess I would go squirrel hunting again. The only other easy game to hunt by our farm is black bear, but I refuse to eat it. My brother-in-law hunted a beautiful large buck four years ago. The venison was very good! I also have a freezer full of brook and rainbow trout. Living by the ways of our ancestors is a fine life. Keep making videos of how life was enjoyed a century ago ~ Diane

Hi Jerry. Congratulations on building your beautiful cabin and stone fireplace, from Oxford UK. I want to build a similar fireplace. What is your firebox width to height to depth dimensions please? It appears to have a high stone arch for the width, but no smoke in the room!

Love that your from the Uk and can see my videos from the US. Let me know if this helps you out. How to, fireplace talk kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmnSmaCHptB9jNk

I have watched my father clean squirrel all my life Mama would cook them they were good. Now people think you are crazy if you tell that. My dad would eat turtle soup. Frog legs. He has kill a snake and cooked it said it was good. Dove quail duck he would eat. Mama was good at cooking these she knew to cook them and make them tender. We didn't have to eat that way we thought I was good. We could go to store and get too. Mama always put up lots of vegetables . Which we ate alot of also she would make her own jellies perseves. People are so spoiled and selfish now they no idea how to make now. People have gotten to lazy they want everything to be easy. Most them are misable people.

I've cooked stuff on top of my regular wood stove and it is a pain to get temps consistent enough to properly cook things (in the modern sense) but it can be done. Cast iron skillets are the best cookware to use. Boiling water can be done but you really gotta crank the stove up, but its not difficult to heat water for tea or even run a coffee percolator. It just takes a while. I've melted snow on the stove to make hot water for bathing during prolonged winter power outages. I'd imagine that a proper cook stove would make all this a bit easier.

Yes, just like anything else. The more you use it the easier it is. I have a damper on the stove but broke it the last time I had to move the stove. It does make things a bit easier

I never ate reptile. Do you have to slow cook all reptile the same as brisket? Do you have to let it rest for a period of time after cooking? Is there a internal temp a person needs to look for Doneness? I will google how to prepare these meats. I just wanted your preferred way of preparing this type of food. Last question!!! Would you smoke reptile over wood like they do brisket? Have you had reptile suvie ?

Did you sift the flower and corn meal. Andersonville prison in the civil war had many prisoners get diarea and died from unsifted meal. When they realized what was happening they got some sifters and the problem went away.
