@@coachsbbq7204 I have not made one yet...what I meant was ,I had the idea of putting a pipe for heat distribution since we in India used to use a vertical water boiler with a pipe in the middle...it is out of the market now ....I will surely post when I make it... I would throw the galvanized out instantly. You don't want zinc or other metals in that coating in your food, by heating the galvanized it will slowly release particles. Great idea just bad material choice.

How did you attach the roof vent and flashing in the firebox? Is it welded, or did you use the gasket maker? And on the other side with the 4" tubing?
@lobo51
@lobo51 6 жыл бұрын
I cut it to fit and wedged it together. It doesn't have to be air tight your just need it to direct the airflow. It gets plenty of smoke into the box evenly. All the pieces are just wedged together I didn't need any kind of sealant. they are not under any pressure so they stay together just fine.

looks great - use the linseed oil on the smoker too as a protectant, along with a cover.... a water pan next to the firebox is a great baffle and adds moisture to the chamber. Do you use a drip pan under the meat when smoking?
@lobo51
@lobo51 3 жыл бұрын
Those are all great ideas and good recommendations as well. I use a water pan when I smoke and to answer your question no I don’t use a drip pan. I let the drippings heat the smoke diverted and they vaporize and re-flavor the meat.

I joined our local firehall 20 years ago. We have burn buildings that get to 1000 f a fire box is like a wood stove. 1500 -2000 degree f. Don't take a chance for a couple of bucks. If you are like me you don't have a lot of money. Go to the scrap yard. probably cheaper than buying new at Home Depot . Do it for you family

Thats what I was wondering with these and other mods. Will the gasket maker cause harm to the food. The metal/galvanized metal/ and dryer vent. I’m pretty sure all that will mix in or powder off into the food. Are there any ways to seal the grill and not have poison or anything unhealthy mixing with the food
@lobo51
@lobo51 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. I coated it with high heat paint. The Gasket material is minimal enough that it shouldn't have an affect. I always recommend contacting the manufacturer with any specific concerns that they may address.

You don't want galvanized steel in yer smoker
@lobo51
@lobo51 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used galvanized. I forgot to talk about that, I researched it pretty heavy and the bottom line for me was that Zinc doesn't vaporize untill you get well over 1500 degrees and none of the metal will be touching the meat, as well as I have coated the galvanized metal with about 10 coats of high Heat paint so I feel pretty safe using it. With that said, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND MAKE YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS ABOUT USING IT OR NOT.

Zinc starts burning off at 900, and hardwoods like oak burn between 900 and 1200. The concern with Zinc is not only the gasses, but the powdery Zinc Oxide thats created when the Zinc burns off and combines with Oxygen. That being said, the design is cool, all you would have to do is remove the Zinc coating. There's tons of videos online of how to do it. You basically just have to soak it in an acid for a while, and it will eat the Zinc coating.

Galvanized = poison. However, Not a terrible design for a supplemental baffle plate.. if made from a different material, and perhaps a bit shorter in length. The other suggestion that I'd make is to drill the holes from 1/4 to 3/4 (closest to furthest from the firebox) to further increase the desired result of the "reverse flow" design for more even cooking across the cooking chamber.

How much fat/grease has built up inside the galvanized tube? The holes appear to be on the sides not the bottom I’d imagine some fat is collecting in there. How are you/have you cleaned that out?
@lobo51
@lobo51 5 жыл бұрын
Tony Thompson Great questions. Yes the holes are on the sides so there is little to no grease build up on or in the tube. I actually never clean out the meat chamber of any of my smokers. They become more and more seasoned as time goes by adding to and helping maintain the flavor consistency.

some good advice, youve done your research but those cook chamber expanded steel grills are gonna need some support like angle iron or something, one pork shoulder or heavy piece of meat and those will be sagging in no time. Also! NEVER use galvanized steel inside of a cooking area EVER unless you don't mind zinc fumes inside of your food.. I like the idea behind it but galvanized is not the way to go.
