This is my favorite infomercial hands down. It checks every box of 90s movie cliches. The opening music, the premise of the wish, the bully who is also inexplicably the friend because they couldn’t cast two kids, the immediate doctors visit, the off-screen wipeout in front of extras in bikinis, even the music they play every time they reveal his transformation. The one thing that kills me is how the son is clearly in 6th or 7th grade but doesn’t know the names of every state?

As the dad's life unravels, we feel for his plight, but the immediate emotion is too strong for us to find a villain- it's certain that he did not deserve this fate, but who put him to it? The child's standoffish behavior as Dad tries to convince him to wish things better gives us a dead-on hint, but it's really what comes later that makes this clear. The child wishes immediately to "never see [the Dad] again," sealing his fate. Later, we see the Child with a new dad- a Step Dad as it were. He seems kind, paternal, and has a very trustworthy mustache, the kind you'd see on a good cop of this time period. It's another one of the Child's birthdays, so Step Dad attempts to have a more deep and emotional talk about the nature of the Step Dad, and how much he really does love him. What does the Child do? This sociopath, this demon, this subhuman amalgamation of filth undeserving of oxygen, the Child refuses any sort of input and wishes without *hesitation* to turn the father into a cup of coffee. Why? There is no reason. The malice on the child's face says it all, there is no soul behind that expression. The plot immediately reveals itself, the villain becomes clear- this was never about the Dad, he was simply an unfortunate victim of Satan himself appearing on earth as this Child, with the power of wishes. Dad was never meant to learn any lessons or become a better father, all of the Child's actions were purely malicious, watching Dad suffer until he became a weak plaything. This could also explain the Child's unending youth, despite apparently numerous birthdays. And now, the Devil is unsatisfied with Step Dad and immediately wishes him away into coffee. It is absolutely infuriating, especially for those who have tried a step father- I have not, but I assume? There is not words in the human lexicon to describe how much of a selfish fiend this Child is at all times, especially considering the Dad was the one being called selfish. And to what end? Mother walks in, who was mainly a side character up to this point, and goes to drink Step Dad coffee. The Child feigns humanity and tells Mother to wait. But he's smiling. There is no intent behind the Devil's actions now. Drinking Step Dad IS the end goal, but he needs some sort of alibi in case his inhuman demeanor is suspect. Thus, he makes no further attempts to stop her, watching presumably in delight as Step Dad is imbibed in the form of coffee. No mortal was meant to wield the power of wishes, and this form of Satan himself was manifested to make that clear.
@NicolasKolossos Жыл бұрын
Well - thanks for the long text, so I dont have to. I go along with your interpretation till the coffee-scene - wherein I see the evil in the complex of realtionship of the familiy, a bit more centered on mother and son - and therein more centered on the mom, who got the last authority. In the scene I do not see malicious expressions of the kid, after she silenenced him. Instead he seems to be concerned to me, as she 'consumes' the next husband. But back to the beginning to close the circle. The original dad indeed seems to be "selfcentered" and missed to fullfill his familiar obligations. There is no need for examples, what he alone could have done better. In my opinion, the basic realtionship between mom and dad seems to be doomed to fail. In the plant-dad-scene as the mother complained they would have grown apart, I saw the hint, that each member of the family doesnt understand the problems of the others. These grotesque adult swim infomercials are examples of how-to-fail for me. - Therefor I am very thankful.
