A woman meets her estranged sister at a diner.
COOL FOR FIVE SECONDS is used with permission from Dani Wieder. Learn more at daniwieder.com.
Colleen has invited her estranged sister Eleanor to meet her in a diner in Chicago during the holiday season. They haven't seen or talked to one another for a while. But Colleen, who has joined the 12-step Narcotics Anonymous program, is hoping to re-establish some kind of connection.
Making amends, however, is not so easy. Though there is a shared history between the sisters, there's also a lot of resentment, which comes seeping to the surface as the conversation escalated into a rehashing of old persistent resentments and anger.
Directed by Dani Wieder from a script by Calamity West, this two-hander is equal parts bitingly funny, emotionally raw and deeply empathetic, with an ear and eye for the complexities of relationships between sisters, and how currents of affection and anger can flow between siblings, though it all comes from a deep well of love.
Getting to that love through the many layers of history and pain is the film's journey, traced through a particularly knotty and contentious discussion. Like many two-handers, the writing is especially rich, where the dialogue works on both the conscious spoken level but is also rich with subtext.
That subtext is especially loaded here, imbued with a familial history and love, but also the conflicts and catastrophes of a relationship between an addict and those they hurt in the course of their addiction before they seek help. Before the relationship can truly move forward, the past must be acknowledged -- including the collateral damage of pain that was caused.
Colleen clearly knows the minefield she is entering, and the film visually begins with an artful, deliberate sense of composure and a vaguely holiday feel, as if carefully neatening itself before a potential emotional storm. The opening sequence gestures towards holiday festivity, but there's a melancholy in the score that hints there's something uneasy in these visual snippets of Christmas cheer.
There are often quirky details included in the framing, and the occasional skewing of image, which often places the camera at unexpected angles, hints at the imbalance that exists between the sisters. This dynamic, almost fractured visual approach plays out in the dialogue, which roils and churns with biting honesty as Colleen and Eleanor reckon with one another for the first time since Colleen has sought help.
Actors Katherine Bourne Taylor and Mary Tilden nail both the sense of familiarity and connection between the sisters, from the way they bicker one second and then demonstrate humor and care the next, even despite their estrangement. Both Colleen and Eleanor clearly have a core of often painful familial history together, and even the rhythms and intonations of their speech have a kinship. But the sisters took different paths, and it will take extraordinary honesty and transparency to begin to repair the breach.
COOL FOR FIVE SECONDS portrays how that process of repairing relationships and making amends is not so "feel good" as we'd like, and in fact can get quite ugly. Anger, rage and pain from the past can fester, and it takes more than one earnest conversation to address them. It will take consistency, openness and the courage to be wrong, vulnerable and accountable. But this rich snapshot of two sisters at a turning point shows those efforts have to begin somewhere, with a willingness to hang in there and listen to painful truths on both sides.

"The narcissistic parent often pits siblings against each other, setting up a destructive pattern that can stick for decades. Each child has a role to play, and it only ever benefits the narcissistic parent. There is the ‘golden child’ who dutifully obeys - at least outwardly - every command from the narcissistic parent, and then basks in the praise. There is the ‘scapegoat’ child, who rebels, and bears the wrath." Eye opener for me with 3 siblings.

doesnt have to be narcissism and doesnt have to be a parent... those structures grow on its own. Theres always the one who deals with authority better, always one who is clean and the other dirty (-ier), theres always one that cares and one cares less or is careless. People differ from each other and that sets them apart in a situation where u have more than one child. And children fight, cuz challenging the other, compete and react is in their nature.

This is so true. And it’s all because we attach so much importance to the labels “Mother, Father, Brother, Sister”….in reality, they’re all just “other people”…but by giving them these labels, we confer on them a massive ability for them to emotionally hurt us and that we should take it because of those labels. The reality is, for those of us who don’t get on with our families, that if we met these people at a party or on vacation without knowing them beforehand, we’d have nothing to do with them and our lives would be better as a result.

Things we have to deal with. My sister and I haven't spoken for 8 years after I asked how her kids were. She responded, "Why do you want to know?" I thought it was healthy to be genuinely concerned and supportive of a niece and nephew - I guess not. Sis said she wanted to be left to herself. If she chooses to disconnect, then so be it. I'm not going to chase after her or try to figure out what's on her mind. It's not that important right now. Maybe before I die, I'll leave her a brief voicemail saying hi and goodbye. The end.

What a performance! Katherine did an excellent job of "Holding it together" as Colleen until Eleanor crossed too many lines. You could actually see the pressure building inside until it finally burst out. Likewise, Mary was relentless as Eleanor until said crossing of lines. Watching her deflate so that the sisters could communicate on the same grounds was, in a strange way, a relief. Yes, they're angry, hurt, and frustrated with each other, but in the end, they do want each other in their lives. Maybe not every day, but at least a bit. Bravo!

In fairness, that was maybe reasonable when it came to my parents (given the complicated circumstances eluded to above), but my poor sister... It's crazy that the steps send us out to do this with people we hurt FOR OURSELVES AND OUR SOBRIETY when the best thing for them might be to cut us off/not have contact with us, and not necessarily for big traumas, but just because of how still manipulative/toxic/without self-awareness we are when we are newly sober.

The lady in the green sweater was remarkably composed. i do not think that i would have the tolerance and patience for the way that she was being spoken to. She has demonstrated that the art of persuasion, to convince a hardened person to say the three hardest words, is through unfaltering love. For most of us, it is about social justice, that individuals whom have threatened to harm innocents, should be dealt with as harshly. However, to turn the other cheek, as this lady shows, has produced the results that she had wanted. Whereas if she had dealt her sister with an equal dose of medicine, she would have gotten up to leave.

When the guy came in towards the end, I thought he was gonna see Colleen and Eleanor comforting each other and start being homophobic accusing them of being lesbians. I’m glad it didn’t go down that route. This is a touching story between two sisters which I’m sure a lot of people could relate to.

Isn’t this movie a metaphor describing the emotions a person is going through while doing introspection? Two sisters representing two sides of a global personality (the family) : the perfectionist one and the casual/carefree one. Two opposite forces that we have to love and accept as a whole.

Great actors.I felt I would like to know them as well as well as their moms. The word “love “ here is real, human, and healing even if the fights will continue in the future. You always can choose to remember your sibling as your best buddy, even if years or even death has temporarily separated you.
