It prevents the sawdust from accumulating in the shop vac, which prolongs your filter's lifespan. Since the dust doesn't go into the vac, the filter doesn't clog, which means you don't have to replace them that often. They cost $20 and up, so this is worth it.

I think that is exactly the trick with these types of video ... keep you watching till the end. Plus, not mentioning other significant pieces needed to complete the project, such as the collection barrel. What I think is more fun is working out what will break first ... I think the glue-screw boundary between the pipe and the wood valve assembly looks like the weak point to me.

It’s a split dust collector. Keeps the heavier particulate from clogging up the shop vac filter for those of you who don’t know. The switch is to maintain full vacuum power, but if you already have to walk over to switch it, I’d probably save myself the time/materials and get a pre-made inexpensive dust collector and swap hoses as needed.

It could be done way easier/cheaper anyway.
@Fivizzz
@Fivizzz 2 жыл бұрын
I don't get the point of the switch, both hoses end up connected the exact same way. Is the point just to have one hose for standard vacuuming and another for tools? Or I guess the ability to have two tools hosed up at the same time for quick switching? That seems like an overly complicated solution to a non-issue.
@FiltyIncognito
@FiltyIncognito 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fivizzz Splitting the hose reduces the power of the vacuum. If both hoses were open, you'd have half the suction. If it's just you in the shop you aren't going to be running two machines at once. The switch is so that you're not wasting vacuum power on doing nothing.

I think the point was more to build a DIY dust collection cyclone rather than a device to swap between two connected hoses... that being said there's a major design flaw in that dust is going to be trapped between the pieces of plywood in his gate and eventually clog.

Thank you. Jes, you should be in Hollywood. I guess I have to subscribe, I wouldn’t want to miss your next project, or, some might call it, work of art. Either you’re good designing stuff on your computer or you’ve worked the idea out in your head million times and you’ve made a bunch of them to perfect it to this level. As someone who actually has a shop vac and uses it often I think this is a great idea. I wish a part like this was available at the hardware store tbh. Anyone that has ever used a shop vac knows that even if you put the dust trap on the inside it still spits dust. For those who are unaware: yes a shopvac is a vacuum but it has two opening one is for suction and the other is for blowing air out. It literally takes two filters and a t shirt wrapped around the filter to keep my shop vac from spitting dust when I vacuum my garage and even then dust still gets everywhere for some reason. It is not a regular vacuum and dust goes flying everywhere if you don’t filter properly.
@necrojoe

Home Depot sells a "muffler" type attachment for the exhaust port of the Rodgit shop vacs. It acts as a diffuser to quiet some of the sound, as well as tempers the exhaust air through a foam so that it's not like a leaf blower out the back. Might be worth looking into if it could fit your vac, or if there's another similar item for your vac.
@chashint1
@chashint1 2 жыл бұрын
Something is wrong with your shop vac if it is spitting dust and this contraption will not help. I can think of four possible problems. 1: Wrong filter that doesn’t fit the machine. 2: Wrong type of filter for the debris you are vacuuming. FWIW fireplace ashes should never be vacuumed, while a HEPA filter will catch them it will clog almost immediately and if the vac is powerful it can tear the pleats of the filter. If you absolutely have to use the shop vac for ashes use shop vac bags and a HEPA filter, the bag will help protect the filter, but you will still have to clean it often. 3: Damaged filter. A powerful shop vac will tear the pleats of a clogged filter. 4: Filter not installed correctly.

That was a very creative way to build a vacuum splitter for your Shop-Vac. I believe it would be just as easy and relatively low cost to build a PVC pipe header with as many shut off valves that you needed.

Very well produced video. I was watching it and amazed that he could make the product so well, and make a video at the same time. Now I see in the comments that it's probably a team of producers, not an individual. The one change I would make to the product, is to put the handle on top, so I don't have to reach around the hoses to switch it. That way, gravity would keep it in position. On the bottom, vibration and gravity could make it drift to the middle.

Title is accurate. You're not a man so that's why you don't understand. It's not men's fault for evolving into tool wielding apes, it's mother nature who naturally selected our mutations to make us what we are. So in the end, it's Mother nature who is at fault and who seems to almost globally be gendered as a female for some reason. Some women will understand this, but many won't. At the same time, many men will understand this, but some won't. Just like there are some things women experience that men will never understand, the same goes in the other direction. Stop being bitter and enjoy this man's handiwork. 🖖 live long and prosper my fellow human!

@@JohnYalda oh, don't get me wrong... I understand completely the entirety of this video. Being a woman has nothing to do with it. I was simply stating that the title says "cool idea from a plastic pipe" but it is more than just a plastic pipe. Its plastic pipe, wood, and new plastic barrell, as well as everything else he used to create the "vacuum attachment". He used quite a large variety of tools and materials in his workshop to create this new useful tool but it is still a complicated design for those that do not understand the process. Ttfn

You can do most projects if you’ve got a compound miter saw and a good drill with an assortment of bits, honestly. Just have to get creative! The more tools, the more possibilities and some things can be done with a nicer edge, or longer cut, but most things you can manage with a few really good utility tools. Oh wait, I forgot, a decent palm sander is a really good idea unless you enjoy sanding by hand for hours.
