I never knew this about her childhood. My mother introduced me to her in the 70's. I first saw her on tv playing cat woman on batman. As an adult l moved to the west coast where l got a chance to see her perform at a supper club twice. She was amazing, and a true trailblazer and legendary.

After the CIA surveillance of her became public, Eartha did return to Broadway. When she was carried onto the stage at the start of her first performance, she was not only given a standing ovation but many in the audience swarmed into the aisles and rushed towards the stage to applaud her. She was loved by many.

She made a big mistake however in being against the US in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh murdered many thousands of his North Vietnamese in a deadly land reform in the 1950s. Even Ken Burns showed this in the former's book. Kitt was not perfect!

Eartha's Aunt Mamie was a wonderful inspirational woman, taking in Eartha as a child and introducing her to a meaningful variety in education and the arts. What a lucky child to have such a great woman to take her in. No wonder Eartha loved her and made sure she showed that love and respect in adopting Mamie's surname. I met Eartha twice in the 90s. At her shows she would request men (often starstruck gays like me) to be seated close to the stage, so she could sing and flirt with them. She sang a song in German in one of her shows with a spot light on me in the balcony. I barely held it together and will never forget it. It pains me to hear of her early life. Despite that she became someone we can all be proud of. Thank you so much for making this video.

I seen Eartha Kitt in concert many years ago, in Seattle (The Moore theater). I forget exactly what year, about 1989. I remember her doing just what you said. She was incredible! Especially singing that one song with the spot light on her, as she danced around and walked back and forth across the stage. That song she sang was called "Have Nagila". An old traditional Jewish song. The best, and most enjoyable version I have ever heard from anyone. It was incredible.

My Mom went to school with Eartha Kitt! It was called the New York School of Performing Arts. This is the most comprehensive and enlightening story of Eartha I have ever heard! There are many interesting facts I never knew that this amazingly fascinating doco revealed to me. Eartha has a voice whether she is singing or talking that is so singularly unique. She is sexy, uninhibited, challenging yet strong, defiant and confidently proud. When I was ,10 ,1963, grandma took me to Washington ,DC..One night she took me to a nightclub to see Eartha Sing.We sat at a front table..small club.Eartha sang to me and even gave me a kiss on my cheek I will never forget that sultry voice. And that kiss.

Thank you. This is one of the stories we need to hear these days. A woman who put truth first and dealt with everything as it came, who, while finding what felt right for herself, never forgot to aid others as she went. Someone who faced all the sexism and racism, who took the results of her stands in stride but never forgot to look for when she could make a difference, and who held her head up high and proud. Wonderfully done! I've always thought of Ms. Kitt as creative, talented and exotic. Her start in life was very terrible and horrible, but for taking chances to make a great life for herself she's got guts. A great lady.

She was an absolute beauty, no matter her race! She was so gracious and talented! My older brother was in love with her from her time as Catwoman on Batman '66. I never thought that it was odd that my red haired Irish brother was in love with a woman of color. Maybe that's because race was never really an issue with my family. We were taught to treat everyone the same, just by my parents' example. I was so sad when she passed, seeing it as another piece of my childhood disappearing.

Because you were taught at an early age that race, like beauty , is only skin deep. Your brother saw something that many people didn't realized: Eartha was one of the sexiest women of all time. The Catwoman " Meeooow". " Santa Baby" . The way she handled herself. Orson Welles said " She's the sexiest woman on earth." Everyone's ideal of sexiness was Marilyn Monroe, but although she was prettier, she had to manufacture her sexiness ( She was always in her " look at me clothes ", and her walk was because she had to cut 1/4in off one of her shoes, nottomentionher" Happybirthday MrPresident" song). Marilyn used her physical attractiveness to get attention when she walked through a room, Eartha only had to walk in. What really bothers me the most is that she's never mentioned on any "Sexiest woman " list. I'll never understand that. You seem like you have a family with true values. I wish you and all of your loved ones peace and happiness.

I've really enjoyed your biographies of characters from what I consider the golden age of TV! Awesome job! But your video on Eartha Kitt really opened my eyes! I had no idea of her past. I remember watching her on talk shows of the late '60s and early '70s and she was always really interesting and provocative...and talented! But to hear about how she had to struggle...WOW! Wonderful video about a woman of great character. My mom was a fan and I surprised her by taking her to see Ertha's nightclub show at the Carlisle in NY. I was probably in my 30's and she was probably twice my age. See sat in front and wouldn't you know she came to our table and teased at me like a cat in heat. My Lord what a performer, beautiful mover and a voice like silk. A once in a lifetime moment!

In the movie "St Louis Blues" of 1958, Eartha Kitt is on fire as she plays a chanteuse who challenges a closed-minded family trying to stifle a young artist's voice. That artist was the great American composer W.C. Handy. Handy was played by none other than Nat King Cole. So much talent was packed into this movie which included Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Pearl Bailey, Ruby Dee, Cab Calloway, etc. But Eartha's character stood out because of her fierce, unapologetic commitment to allow people to live their own truth. A strong, confident and independent Black woman in a movie that was made in 1950s America. Before the Civil Rights and Women's Rights movements of the 60s. Little did I know that when Eartha was speaking her defiant lines they were coming from her own personal experience - overcoming her horrific childhood and struggling to fight for her own artistic expression. Kudos for a very well made, inspiring and surprising documentary of this legendary artist's life.

Excellent video. I had no idea about Eartha Kitt's history and all that she had to overcome. My main memories were from watching Batman as a child. I did have the privilege to see her perform in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies" performed in London's West End - back in the 80's. She was extraordinarily talented.
