Yes, if you need more power/current, the Vidar delivers 200 W per channel into 4 ohms for $799. two Aegir 2's deliver 100 W into 4 ohms for $1800 for the pair. OR, just stop messing around and buy the Tyr for $3,200 and get 350 watts/4 ohms!! Or, back where we started, one Vidar gets you 200 watts/4 ohms. Sorry, I'm not on board with the theoretical advantages of running balanced cables for reduced noise, UNLESS you're running VERY long cables, 50+ feet. OG Aegirs are apparently sold out.
@fascinatedbyeverything7 ай бұрын
I think the Aegir 2 is 100 watts in mono into 8 ohms, not 4 ohms. In theory it's even more with 4 ohm but you run a chance of hitting the thermal protection circuitry. It'd be cool if you'd get Schitt to give you a 2nd Aegir 2 to test mono because 100 watts should power most anything. So you could test the world's first quasi-Class A Magnepan setup. 🙂 (Also curious how these work with the Zu DW6.)

Great review. BTW -- In a forum, Schiit's Jason Stoddard stated the damping factor in mono-block mode is 100. Halo is the factor for a low damping factor in stereo. It allows the bass to be rather prodigious and controlled (in spite of the low damping factor) by including the speaker drivers in the feedback loop. Halo is not implemented in mono-block mode. As an owner of a single Aegir 2, I can confirm that there's some magic going on with regards to Halo and bass output/control.

Aegir 2 is a simi class A amp, the Vidar is an class A/B amp. I have the aegir OG, I run it in mono mode. I recently bought them, I chose them over the Aegir 2 because of price. I chose them over Vidar 2 because it has way more power than want or need in 2 channel mode and even more in mono. To be honest the Aegir in mono is more than I need. I am run Zu DWX speakers, they don't need 80 watts of power. The cool thing is that in mono I use XLR cables which mean long runs of cables between preamp and amp are not problem. This allows me to have 3 foot speaker cable. Since, my entire system runs in balance with XLR I pick almost no noise from cables.

I think the main upgrade from the Aegir 1 is the power supply. I own 2 Aegir's running in mono mode. The second amp only boosts the output by ~25%. One of the Aegir has a hum in the power supply that could be partially relieved by loosening the nut on the base of the amp. Apparently this is a common problem with these amps. I am very curious to see a comparison of mono/stereo for the Aegir 2, just like the Audiophiliac did awhile back for the first version.

Depends where the output impedance is measured. Do they measure it at the amplifier PCB, or the binding posts, or include the resistance of the speaker cable/speaker posts/ speaker internal wiring etc? In real life damping factors are considerably higher than the amp spec sheet dictates.

@@Chris.from.1950 Just in case you eventually get the Fortes, I've had mine a few weeks now, check the speaker wire terminals for being snug, I use banana jacks, and didn't check the tightness. Because they have the metal bar jumpers to connect the upper and lower section, it's important. These need breaking in, takes a few hours to loosen up the drivers, you can hear them open up suddenly. I have Heresy IV'S and moved those to my second system for the bigger sound of the Fortes, my Heresy's are well broken in and sound sweet and after a few days the Fortes weren't even in the same ballpark, was seriously considering sending them back when I decided to try my upgraded OFC jumpers off the Heresy's, that's when I discovered the loose connectors. Put on the jumpers, properly tightened and turned on the amp. The change was dramatic, the Fortes now sounded like I expected and then some. So if you can swing it, they are worth it, just don't judge them for a few days as they loosen up.

The 2 ran cooler and I thought, at first, that it sounded a lot better. But after a few weeks I realized that the sound was similar with maybe the 2 having a hair more detail. My problem with it, though, was that when I pushed it hard - 98db peak at listening seat, it went into protection mode. The Aegir 1 went a couple of db more before doing the same thing. I don’t often play at those levels but didn’t expect the 1 to go louder than the 2. I couldn’t get a response from Schiit customer service so returned it. Maybe the best set up would be a speaker driven and a separate powered subwoofer.

If you like music at whisper levels then buy the Aegir. Any sound above that will clip the amp. I found Fela about 15 years ago and have been addicted since.

Two Aegirs in mono had these for about 4 years. These play loud, well for me (median size room) the amps have never clip. My Speakers are Forte III.

Anyone on this channel know of a speaker that has accentuated midrange for under $15,000.00 ? Other than the La Scala's.

I find it frustrating that most, if not all, speaker manufacturers design all their floor standing speakers to emphasize bass at the detriment to the midrange. I want to buy my last pair of speakers. I am not a "bass" guy.

You might look at a pair of Spacial Audio Lab open baffles if you have the space. They need space from the back wall but do reward you with some pretty incredible sound if you give it to them. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get bloated bass from them if you were trying. Also, all their speakers are under $15k. Good customer service as well

Steve. I've been a faithful viewer of your channel for years and respect your opinion on most things. However you keep referencing "loud" listening vs. "non-loud" listening over and over again in your product recommendations. Those are both completely subjective and therefore meaningless to us viewers. Can you please define the difference between the two in a measurable way such as decibels? Much appreciate being able to make sense of this. -PH
