Mississippi here and being an aviation fan…the Key brothers of Meridian were the forefathers of modern day air-to-air refueling systems. In 1935 the Key brothers in the plane named the Ole Miss (now in the Smithsonian) tested and successfully flew non-stop 27 days without landing for fuel 😮 or other provisions. Mississippi is the birthplace of Blues music and of course Elvis…both important in music history. Mississippi (UMMC,Jackson) was the first successful human lung transplant, first heart and kidney autotransplant surgeries in medical history.

As has been pointed out, the airplane was only TESTED in North Carolina. It was designed and developed in Dayton, Ohio. As a matter of fact, the Wright Brothers built a wind tunnel in Dayton to test airfoil designs, only to learn that the aerodynamic tables that were thought to be accurate, weren't. An airfoil built from those tests became part of the first successful airplane. That wind tunnel can be found at the Air Force museum there.

In Colorado, you missed the biggest thing that literally changed the world forever. At Ames, Colorado, near Telluride, the first commercial generation and transmission of alternating current (A.C.) electricity in the world occurred in 1891. The reservoir and hydroelectric generation plant was constructed by partnership consisting of George Westinghouse, Nikola Tesla, and Telluride attorney L. L. Nunn. The electricity generated was transmitted via power line to mines located several miles away. The plant inspired the design of the hydroelectric plant built at Niagra Falls, New York a few years later. The hydroelectric plant at Ames still operates today.

Interesting you say the plane was invented in North Carolina though the Wright Brothers developed it in Dayton. Using similar logic the ferris wheel would have then been "invented" in Chicago as it first appeared in the 1893 Columbian exposition and was developed by Ferris an engineer from Pittsburgh. They want to outdo the Eiffel Tower and Ferris clearly delivered. His massive Ferris wheel was moved to the St Louis world's Fair in 1904 then a few other places and then sadly scrapped.
@mr.munger Жыл бұрын
Exactly, the airplane for sure was not invented in North Carolina. They were "first in flight" because the Wright Brothers took their airplane that they invented in Dayton, Ohio and flew it in North Carolina for the first time so they could keep the invention private and take advantage of the coastal winds and sand for softer landings. The airplane was invented in Ohio, first flew in NC, then returned to Ohio for additional improvements and testing. Considering flight is one of the man's greatest most life altering inventions, that's a pretty big swing and miss on Brigg's part.

My hometown of Kokomo Indiana has made a couple of your worst lists but it harbored quite a few inventions, so many that it's nickname is City of Firsts. The pneumatic tire and transmission were invented here and we had an incredible entrepreneur named Elwood Haynes who developed stainless steel in 1912, and several metal alloys that NASA still uses today. He also developed the first clutch driven car in 1897 which is argued to be the first American automobile.

North Carolina did not invent the airplane. The Wright Brothers from Dayton Ohio brought their disassembled airplane to Kitty Hawk (Kill Devils Hill), a beach they had chosen for its winds. After two of their test flights, which got their prototype off the ground for seconds, they disassembled their plane and returned to Prairie Huffman, near Dayton, in Ohio. This is now a National Historic Site. On this open prairie, they continued to develop their invention until it could stay in the air for 45 minutes and fly in a wide circle, indicating that by 1904 they had control of their powered, heavier than air, aircraft. Please read David McCullough's book The Wright Brothers. It is totally unjust and downright ridiculous to say that North Carolina invented the airplane because it had windy beaches.
@mr.munger Жыл бұрын
Right! I couldn't believe he gave the airplane to North Carolina. I thought it was common knowledge it was invented in Dayton, OH. Ohio's "slogan" is "birthplace of aviation", the Huffman Prairie is a National Historic Site as you mentioned. Dayton also has the only Aviation Heritage Trail in the nation and is home to the National Museum of the United States Airforce and Aviation Hall of Fame for a reason. You can still see the Wright Cycle Company where they did their inventing and see their resting place as the Woodland Cemetery. Shocked Briggs screwed this one up.

Wisconsin also has the electric guitar, invented by Les Paul. Also the ice cream sundae.
By "coolest" invention in Connecticut I was anticipating the frisbee, whiffle ball, the hamburger (disputed with Texas), or the local favorite birch beer soda (goes great with pizza). If you want to get controversial, Connecticut recognizes Gustave Whitehead (Stratford, CT) as the first in flight which has some international support. The real controversy is with the Smithsonian who admit there is a contract between the Wright family and themselves agreeing that they must say the Wright brothers were the first in flight or they could no longer keep the Kitty Hawk flyer. I roll my eyes every time I see a North Carolina "first in flight" license plate.

A transistor is a semiconductor device with at least three terminals for connection to an electric circuit. In the common case, the third terminal controls the flow of current between the other two terminals. This can be used for amplification, as in the case of a radio receiver, or for rapid switching, as in the case of digital circuits. The transistor replaced the vacuum-tube triode, also called a valve, which was much larger in size and used significantly more power to operate.The first transistor was successfully demonstrated on December 23, 1947 at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Bell Labs is the research arm of American Telephone and Telegraph. The three individuals credited with the invention of the transistor were William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain. The introduction of the transistor is often considered one of the most important inventions in history.
