The myth is that if a deep sea divers air hose is cut, the pressure differences between the water and inside of the suit will cause the diver's body to be crushed and squished up into his helmet.
Something interesting: In an episode where they talked a little bit about the behind the scenes of this myth, they mention they had borrowed the helmet as part of an antique diving suit and they promised to return it in perfect condition. "The helmet was not in returnable condition".

@@floppy8960 it likely happened to many divers in the 20th century. That being said it is more than possible today with the proper training and equipment to go down to 100 m with no issue. Commercial divers with their specialist suits can go down to approximately 500 m performing what is known as a saturation dive. the United states Navy also have a prototype atmospheric suit which they claim can reach a depth of 2 km. If a commercial diver at 500 m had their suit/chamber fail or a Navy diver had a breach in the atmospheric suit, death would be instantaneous. If you scuba dive to 100 m with the appropriate breathing gases and training and experience, you will be fine and many people do it. It's an activity called technical diving. Your body would be used to the pressure so you would not have any sort of decompression.

Based on an american submarine accident in the 60s, they calculated that once implosion happens, it took around 0.1s for everything to be crushed, way faster than what our nervous system could perceive. Therefore, if they died due to implosion (and not trapped while waiting for the oxygen to diminish), it would be a relatively quick and easy death.

The helmet is, best-case, exactly 100 years old, probably still has both blueprints and a patent describing it, is broken, and generally associated with blue-collar work and subsequent death by blue-collar work.

I came here because of the KRI 402 tragedy, the submarine in my country, Indonesia. Based on assistance from submarines from Australia, Singapore and many more, the pieces of the submarine's body were found. It was inconceivable that the water pressure could crush a body like that. A little fun fact about ballistic gel analogs too, they are not great analogs for human skin either. Ballistic gel is cheap since it can be made at home with jello packets, but human skin can stretch much better than ballistics gel can, and as a result of that they are not reliable human analogues. There are a few accounts of this happening with modern equipment. There is one instance where a team was decompressing and the door messed up. The guy near the door died instantly, the air wave injured the operators outside the door, and the two guys inside the waiting chamber agonized as their lungs instantly became mush and suffocated because their lungs no longer worked.

fun fact: 4 divers died basically this way but also due to an error in their choices. Basically 4 divers spent a lot of time at a facility doing deep sea dives and afterwards needed to spend a lot of time in depressurization chambers in order to return their bodies to its normal state after being under the oceans pressure for so long. Well one day the 4 drivers were in said chambers (2 chambers and 2 drivers were in each chamber), and there’s a guide of steps meant to be followed in order to set the depressurization chambers. The driver performing the steps followed the first 2 accordingly but then skipped to the last step (the 5th step) which was to open the clamp separating the diving bell from the chamber system (what this means is basically opening the clamp that separated the chamber from the diving bell - which were two completely different pressure levels) which resulted in explosive decompression and all 4 divers were killed instantly (either from boiling due to pressure- or even dismemberment and shoved around from the disarray of decompression infiltrating). If there were to be a breach in a submarine at such a depth, which they can go way further than 300 ft, the submarine would implode. It would be the size of a crushed soda can in a few seconds.

This actually happened to a diver in south America not long ago. Not a myth at all. He was cutting cables in extremely deep water and his oxygen line ruptured when it hit something underwater. Obliterated his head and upper torso. Guy never knew what hit him.
