Last time I was in Elkhart I gave her a cursory once over. To say the 3001 is “tired” is a gross understatement. The bottom of the firebox is nonexistent. The backhead is bare. Lots of jewelry needs to be replaced. It was by sheer accident that she is still with us today and a minor miracle she’s back on her home turf. This is an ambitious project, I wish them luck but hope they haven’t bit off more than they can chew.

True, although there is a risk of being to conservative. A large locomotive and matching coach set will get more people excited and invested in the project then say, restoring a caboose or turntable.

I genuinely wonder if passenger rail could make a resurgence in the US if it was advertised as a purely tourist endeavor. Everything pulled by steam or historic diesels. Sort of like a cruise, but overland. Ride all over the country, making stops in cities with large tourist attractions. Los Angeles, Vegas, Salt Lake City, then somewhere in Utah or Colorado at a skii resort would be an incredible weeklong trip. Then you just have the same train turn around and go back the same way with a different set of passengers. You could do something similar in the southeast with Charleston, Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Nashville.

More than a few times during our own alcohol fueled 3/4 idiots sessions he'd wish to see NYC steam return to the main again ( this was shortly after seeing MILW 261 or Frisco 1522 return to excursion service) and lamenting that all the Niagaras had been scrapped. One thing I see (as a non-expert) when thinking of the "costs." Steam engines were big machines that pushed the envelope of the technology of their day. Sometimes they crossed the line, and they exploded (literally). There is a practical economic model to consider. But restoring extremely rare engines is a different matter. They must work and work safely because the option of building another one from scratch should they fail is not an option. Plus, we have evolved in our standards of safety since these machines were first built. If something is going to be operationally restored, it's going to need to run safely forever. That's expensive, but the results are so infinitely worth it.

I spent the first part of the video waiting for a comparison to RGS 20. She was (probably) far more beat up and had a disproportionate dollar per pound restoration cost, but by comparison NYC 3001 sounds both ambitious and doable, and hopefully won't require 13 years in the backshop!

Also it's 1 of only 15 Mountain Types that still exist and 1 of 3 that could operate. (compare to 45 northerns which of 10 run currently)

I can't believe it, the FWRHS wants to restore a Mohawk, the L-3a Mohawk in my opinion was absolutely superior to the J-1 Hudsons. It is one of the few mixed traffic engines on the NYC that can hustle a heavy freight train going west, and seeing the same engine flying down the mainline with a high priority passenger train, I especially love the ones that have the Hancock 3 chime over the typical NYC 5 or 6 chime whistle.

2:39 They did that because they were famously the Water Level Route. They had no mountains, but they did run alongside the Mohawk River.

The Milwaukee Road 261’s excursion consist isn’t a hodgepodge of different paint schemes. Most of their fleet has been painted into Milwaukee Road pre-1955 Hiawatha Orange and Maroon with the dual Maroon stripes. They have a couple you can lease that aren’t in Milwaukee Road colors but most of the passenger cars they use on day trip type excursions on the TC&W are painted in Milwaukee Road colors (Even though many of those cars weren’t Milwaukee Road cars, a couple where Algoma Central, one concessions car was former UP and the other is former NP). Though I look forward to when UP 3985 is restored to working order by Railroading Heritage of Midwest America, formerly the “Friends of the 261”, out of their new shop in Silvas, IL.

Oooo, video on a Kanawha coming too. Yay. (FYI, because I know it is a weird weird word, Kanawha is usually pronounced "kuh-NAW". It doesn't look it, but it was one of the things those of us in Kanawha County that grew up on the Kanawha River are hardwired to go "Hey, here's what it is" to help people outside of WV)

I was hoping for the day 3001 would get restored. There was serious talks a decade ago about doing it, but everything fell flat. Ever since then it has been a waiting game until finally getting the news we dreamed of Wednesday. HOWEVER now the time has come for everyone who kept begging to see NYC Steam Return, to literally open those wallets of theirs and donate (I already did my first donation today and more are coming). Actions speak louder than words and now is the time to truly take action!

I live not far from Elkhart!. The NYC museum is very cool!. And to know that NYC # 3001 is going to be restored is amazing!.

Got to throw the money at the wall to make it happen. I already donated for the first time today and will be doing it again soon (possibly going to be a monthly donor for the 3001 besides also donating monthly towards The Great Steel Fleet Project FWRHS has going on).

@@chooch1764 being involved in preservation since I was young, I am careful LOL. The good thing about Americans is that when you believe or support something, things get done - you know how to put money where your mouth is, not the same in my country.

Definitely this is very exciting! I've been in the cab of this engine years ago and I can definitely see the cost needed for the restoration project but it's so gonna be worth it. Definitely new tubes since they were missing and other major components. But also this would be the 2nd American built 4-8-2 to return to steam. Only other one was Frisco 1522

We got to get people donating as much as they can (already sent my first donation in and by the end of the year will be a monthly donor).

I'm excited for New York Central 3001 being moved to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and restored back to steam for nearly decades scenes it was steamed up in October 1940, so there are so many steam locomotives being restored, first we got the Union Pacific 3985 along side with 5511, Bel-Del number 142, Attica & Arcade Railroad number 18 and now we got New York Central 3001. The New York Central is back from the dead!!!!!

towards the end of the video i was typing "i hear a loco on a hyce video and it sounds like it getting closer........ R.I.P Hyce" only when i took my headset off it as on my end and im only 100 meters from the local line which does allow steam trains to run down it and finally im from england but hearing a steam train getting closer is sad for me as it means i missed it lol.

Better railroad??
@DCSk8er529Ай бұрын
@@jimcarey9523 Be happy the Pennsylvania Railroad didn't have Alfred Perlman running it. Most of Pennsylvania's steam fleet would've been nearly extinct too, and down to 4-6 steam locomotives on display if they're lucky. Granted, the the New York Central was struggling financially, but even so, he didn't care too much about steam preservation. New York Central needs that shine more than Pennsylvania. They suffered BAD, kinda like the Cubs or Cowboys in railroading. Pennsylvania has an 0-6-0 running. One of their K4's is being restored. A new T-1 being built. Not to mention Steam Town, Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad, and of course, the iconic Strasburg Railroad. Does Pennsylvania need more shine? New York Central fans suffered badly, their most Iconic steam locomotives being the Hudsons all got the cutter's torch. There's like 4 New York Central steamers that I can think of that survived.

They should really work with the EBT to use their machine shop to make some of the specialty parts. Would be beneficial to both parties!
@chooch1764Ай бұрын
How? East Broad Top is a narrow gauge railroad and New York Central 3001 is a standard gauge locomotive. Doesn’t really make sense…
@adamrosenhamer3762Ай бұрын
@chooch1764 EBT still has a full machine shop and locomotive works that most places don't have anymore. They have tools specifically for making locomotive parts. Yes, they are different guages, but the EBT could still machine alot of the parts that aren't made anywhere else anymore
@chooch1764Ай бұрын
@@adamrosenhamer3762 EBT does restoration work for their own stuff. They never really did contract work for other locomotives. Strasburg Railroad’s mechanical department makes more sense. Really, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has had their own shop in New Haven, Indiana for quite some time and that’s all they have really needed to maintain NKP 765.
