Having replaced impellers at sea before Capt Bryan has so much more patience than me. I have never watched a more calm level headed Capt. than Bryan.
@joanned81725 жыл бұрын
Yeah he would be fun to sail with he is so calm no matter what happens.
@bobc57615 жыл бұрын
Flyin' Brian has replaced most everything on the boat more than a few times in all these years and miles, especially those d@mn impellers. There's a saying that you learn things by "spending time on the water", the man knows his craft and exudes confidence and calm. The perfect Captain. Wishing the crew best of luck with their new adventures and baby on the way - :-)
@joebarton14755 жыл бұрын
I also admire bryans calm approach as captain, not just in this vid but others as well. What is his background/trade that enables him to fix these problems?
@bobc57615 жыл бұрын
His college degree was in electrical engineering (which has helped tremendously), then he was a software coder, both of which require a very logical mind. As I remember it, he got a job early on doing electrical work on boats, which would have yielded a depth of additional experience.

Old salty sailor taught me once to add dish soap in the impeller housing and before you attach the discharge hose to pour water in to prime the pump action. Seeing the soap over the side at your discharge lets ya know ya got the thing turning and pumping. Sea friendly soap of course. Learned a new trick that day and I've never stop learning new stuff at sea. Thanks for sharing your "how to's" guys..I really like those episodes.
@briane97294 жыл бұрын
I was taught the same, its the same issue with bearings, those first few moments of use, heat, and friction matter to the longevity of the part. Good initial lube is important, dish soap and water help lubricate the impeller until the water starts flowing, keeping it from heating up, and they heat up quick without water!

You guys have a magical touch on editing. Seriously awesome music during the fixing of the air lock! I love Blue's contribution "that's how they make their money... seals" :D

As much as I have loved the story of the crew all these years, this particular episode reflects very well on your love of SV Delos, herself. Your editing - and the much appreciated drone footage effort - really puts her in great light. For me, a classic SV Delos, surely - as it has the essence of the entire experience. If you love this episode too, and haven't yet done so, start from the beginning and watch in order. When you get back here, you might know better what I'm ranting about. Well done, SV Delos crew, and shall she long sail free!

On my Perkins 4-236 I had a sea water flow alarm after the raw water filter. i highly recommend it for your operations. Some are adjustable. I also had a 205 F overtemp switch instead of 225. I also had a temp gauge. I set out to cross to the Bahamas one night and the alarm went off. There was a cluster of Sargasso weed seeds stuck in the intake of the sea water filter. Cheap protection.

Great episode guys and gals! I liked every topic you covered. As to the underwater volcano problem, I realized that one of your favorite things can help explain the problem. That thing is BEER. In a big enough glass try floating a tiny model boat on the "head" (aka foam). Unless it is light as a feather the tiny boat will sink. Besides that I'm glad you got your motor running again. Seems like that rubber impeller has failed at least 4-5 times over the years - from what I remember. Somebody could make some money inventing a better system.

You probably don't spend much time reading these comments but I enjoy these videos immensely for the obvious reasons and less obvious. I got so tired of jacking with impellers on my Yanmar, I installed a filtered electric water pump to cool the engine. No more worries. the only problem was find a belt that fit the new setup without the impeller drive. Just a 12v RV water pump identical to the one that pressurizes water for sinks and showers. More energy efficient as well. relay controlled house-water pump would switch it over anytime the engine water temp rose about 196. Set off a visual and audible alarm at the helm. cheap RV parts same stuff as "yacht" parts but with redneck prices.

I haven’t watched this episode yet...I’m a year behind, trying to catch up. I just watched episode 145 (or close to it), where he replaced the water pump impeller in Namibia.
