I used to sail to Bequia with some friends back in the 70s. We became good friends with a local kid that brought us some mangous to our boat and refused to charge us for them. His name was Victor and he told us that he was an orphan and lived with his grandmother. We became so fond of the kid that we took him along in our sailing trip around the islands with his grandma's permission. Later on he ended up in Puerto Rico and we sponsored him for residence and later on citizenship. We learned at that time that locals used to hunt for whales in small boats and share the meat among Bequia residents. Usually they hunted about 2 or 3 whales every year. Of all the island in the Caribbean, Bequia followed by St. Barth and St. Lucia, are my favorites. Now at 72, I sail with you guys, so thanks for having me in Delos through your great videos.

Wow wow 😲 I’m a subscriber for several years and never saw this episode until today. wow! Sure brought back such old memories as a kid visiting moon-hole with the Johnson’s . My grandfather was approached by the Johnson’s back in 1963 about this unique place and bought moon hole 38 acres, for the sum of. $2600 EC dollars the equivalent of $1000 US dollar, and went about building these very interesting homes. The Johnson’s and my grandfather Claud Hazell remained friends until my gramps, passed in 1989. Today I still have cousins and friends who works for the Moonhole company. Wow its amazing to see this place after 40+ years. You guys did a wonderful job filming.

Very well done, Team Delos! I have loved Bequia and Moonhole since my first visit in 1973. FYI the Bequia whalers are allowed to hunt by the International Whaimg Commission and average one whale per year. The good news is that since the 1960's the humpback population has made a strong comeback and have been off the endangered list for decades. If you would like more information about Bequia and its whaling culture may I suggest you watch "The Wind That Blows", a one hour doc friends helped me with years ago. We started in 1989 and finished in 2012. There are a few shots featuring Moonhole and Tom Johnston, the creator and king, is one of the many interviewees. We lived at Moonhole for a year. It was magical but as to moving there... look before you leap! Bravo on your videos.

When I was four (1965), I lived on the island of Bequia for half a year while my father wrote a physics book. I remember going to moon hole and meeting the original owners, that experience changed my life! I eventually got into scuba diving, sailing, and living an alternative life! Your wonderful documentary about Moon Hole just brought back some very intense awesome memories... Thank You! ps, I’m also buying a Valliant 40’, and heading off to sail the South Pacific. Your beautifuly done videos are getting me phyched to get back into sailing after a few decades of being a Land Lubber! I would love to meet you guys some day, perhaps at Moon Hole! Thanks so much for all of your videos, Robert Huggins (Bert :-)

I have a tip for you Delos moonshiners you will want to try at least once - NIFTY LITTLE OAK BARRELS FROM A WINE SUPPLIER!! I kept one on my sloop to turn cheap rum into gold and eliminate hazardous glass and tacky plastic bottles at the same time. You will easily find several suppliers of US hand made solid oak staved barrels of 1 gallon, 2 gallon or larger. I carved the boat name into one end. I chose the neat little wooden spigot with waxed cork seal packing around the tap lever that works great and never leaks. This is spill proof. Mine never leaked a drop after a water soaking. It is a thing of beauty and sensual to have a 100% wood huggable barrel you can tip back for that authentic rum/moonshine whiskey experience. The life of any party no doubt! You can choose galvanized steel or brass hoops and there are cradles for secure but decorative stowage. Mine was unvarnished and released an angel's share over time but somehow it didn't reduce the proof as much as the water content. You can buy them varnished too, may want to experiment. In these small internally charred barrels the aging time for oak flavors is fast when they are new. I'd consider that more respectable than oak flavors from a bottled additive. This is your first abandon ship item and it is indestructible. Just don't drop it on your foot!!
